Awareness on ICT Components among Grama Niladhari Officers in the Western Province, Sri Lanka

This paper presents the results of Analysis of ICT Awareness among Grama Niladhari Officers (GNO) in Western Province, Sri Lanka. The GNO is the focal point for all Government administrative work with Home Affairs. Therefore, it is useful for them to have better ICT knowledge. The main objective of the study is to identify the awareness of ICT in GNOs. A Sample of 335 were selected from a total of 2,497 GNOs via stratified random sampling techniques. The data were collected via face-to-face interviews and the postal method. Though the exploratory analysis it was found that their level of awareness was high on: Computer, Internet and Emailing and Printer, but proficiency low on Tab, Multimedia, Projector and Scanner. Finally, it can be conclude that ICT components should be popularized among GNOs and their employers should improve socio-economic status and ICT knowledge perceptions of GNOs.
Factors Associated with the Performance of Engineers within Software Development Companies in Sri Lanka

The performance of organizations enables the growth of the company value and its survivability. However Organizational performance within the IT Industry is being mostly impacted by the human resources. As there are different types of employees, their dedication, effort and efficiency differ from each other. Summation of individual employee’s performance will result into the organizational performance. Therefore there might be significant association between organizational factors, individual skills and performance; however, this relationship was not examined in the Sri Lankan context in previous studies. To fill the said research gap this study was carried using the IT product development companies in Sri Lanka. The main objective of this research was to identify the factors which are associated with employee performance. This research was quantitative and used two main types of data collection methods: interviews and a questionnaire. The results of the analysis indicated that Organizational, Personal and Individual skill factors are associated with the engineer performance of software development companies. It can be concluded that the created conceptual framework was confirmed by the analysis which was carried out.
Material Cost Estimation of Newspaper Printing Process by using Multiple Linear Regression Models

Newspaper printing industry is one of the popular industry in developing countries like Sri Lanka. Newspapers become one of the major sources of disseminating news among people. When printing a newspaper, the company has to bear a huge cost since most of the newspapers are printed on a daily basis. Labour cost, material cost, machinery cost and electricity cost are major costs involved in newspaper printing cost. Among those costs, material cost is a combination of the various types of costs. According to the industrial investigations, material cost is a combination of the amount of paper, plate and ink usage in printing, number of printed newspapers and number of pages in a newspaper. The main objective of this research is to identify the contribution of the investigated factors on the material cost. Data were taken from a popular newspaper company in Sri Lanka for a popular daily newspaper. To analyse the weekly data for the material cost the data on the selected factors of; total number of pages, amount of paper, the amount of plate and ink, total printed newspapers were taken from the period of 06th January 2013 to 05th September 2014. Multiple linear regression models were fitted to identify the factors associated with the material cost. Among them, most suitable variables for the models were identified and the model was fitted. A number of pages per newspaper, the amount of printed newspapers, paper amount (kg) and ink amount (kg) becomes the significant factors associated with the material cost of newspaper printing. The amount of the variance explained by the model is about 78%. All the assumptions in multiple linear regression models were held in this model. Therefor we can use this model to estimate the material cost for a newspaper.
Modelling the material cost of newspaper industry in Sri Lanka

Pricing of a product is the most critical issue that confronts most of firms. In order to make a product price, the company has to master all product cost information as well as the product cost structure. In newspaper industry material cost represents a large amount from the production cost and also the pricing of the newspaper is depending on the material cost which is associated with the newspaper. Therefor if the company has an appropriate model for material cost it will be beneficial for the company to price the product and budget planning. The study conducted by Genesis Analytics (Pvt) Ltd about “Factors influencing the cost of books in South Africa” suggested that printing cost is highly affected by number of printed copies, number of pages. This study is an attempt to investigate the impact of mentioned factors to the newspaper industry in Sri Lanka. In this study, the analysis was carried out by using weekly data of material cost from January 2013 to July 2014, for a daily newspaper from leading Newspaper Company in Sri Lanka. The data set was divided into two parts; one for model fitting and other for model validation. As the first step correlation between material cost and number of printed copies, numbers of pages were analyzed. Then multiple linear regression models were fitted for the logarithmic data. Correlation coefficients between material cost and number of printed copies, material cost and number of pages were 0.7446 and 0.6108 respectively. Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) value is 1.0778, suggested that there is no multicolinearity. The proposed multiple linear regression model suggested that, if the number of print copies increased by 1% material cost of the newspaper will increase by 0.850593% and if number of pages increased by 1%, material cost of the newspaper increased by 2.107160 %. The overall model represents 74% of the data. It can be concluded that as well as in the book printing cost, newspaper cost is highly affected by number of pages and the number of printed copies.
