Buddhist Ethics and Thirukkural: A Study of Ethical, Cultural, and Aesthetic Perspectives
(Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, 2023) Arundaharan, Kavitha
Buddhist philosophy and ethics played a significant role in determining the formation of Tamil literary culture and its social dynamics. Buddhist ideals and philosophies emerged as logical concepts of the period when society began to transition from tribal to state formation. It was during this period that the Tamil language developed its own ethical literature. As a result, a large number of moral literature has emerged in Tamil. Thirukkural is the most prominent of these. Thirukkural played a leading role in expressing Buddhist ideals with philosophical and aesthetic intensity. However, these have been suggested by theoretically grounded and thorough studies. They are gloomy. As a result, understanding their role in philosophy, ethics, aesthetics, social dialectics, and other disciplines remains a scholarly issue. As a result, the purpose of this study is to investigate the Buddhist ethics principles recorded in Thirukkural and their significance in the changing social movement. The place of Buddhism in Tamil Literary and cultural formation, the role of Thirukkural in shaping Tamil ethics investigates the Buddhist philosophical foundations and aesthetic underpinnings recorded in Thirukkural, with a focus on their relevance in the changing contemporary social environment. The primary research approach in this study is descriptive methodology, which is based on ethical, cultural, and aesthetic theories.
