Environmental protection in the 21st century: A re-orientatin for global sustainability
(12th Annual Research Symposium, University of Kelaniya, 2011) Bashir, M.
Environmental sustainability has become a serious challenge, given the devastating effects of climate change, destructive activities of man and the serious threat it posed to socio-economic and human cost. Although efforts have been put in place by both nations, and private organizations, recently, the global experience of flood disaster in China, Pakistan, Japan, Australia, Brazil, to mention a few, to desertification and drought in Africa South of the Sahara, and in rainfall pattern, storm, as well as pollution all over the world have degenerated consequences costing billions of dollars to seek solutions. This research examines global environmental crisis with specific focus on Nigeria and advocates community based direct investment as an approach to global environmental protection. The study uses content analysis to examine environmental crisis and government policies and programmes on the environment. The study revealed that most of the policies and programmes of government on environmental issues do not involve the communities for their inputs. The paper ends by making strong recommendations on the need to re-strategize approaches to addressing global sustainability.

Small Arms and Light Weapons Proliferation and its Implication for West African Regional Security
(Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2013) Bashir, M.
One of the fundamental obstacles to peace and security in West Africa is the presence and continued proliferation of small arms and light weapons (SALW). The proliferation of small arms constitutes a major source of destruction to lives and property, exacerbating inter-communal tensions leading to full-fledge conflicts. Most of the West African borders are porous, thus, making it easy for entry and exit of arms, drugs, as well as human trafficking. More so, the high level of corruption in most of these countries also compounded the security challenges especially faced by states and the regional efforts at large. This study examines the impact of small arms proliferation on the regional security. It also assesses the effort of the regional body in combating the menace of small arms. The study is based mainly on existing scholarly works both primary and secondary sources on SALW control.
