Item Awareness and usage of E-library services by members of academic staff in University of Kelaniya(Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Chamara, K.A.T.; Bodhinayaka, D.Modern Libraries have transformed in to digital and virtual libraries where books, journals, and magazines have changed into e-resources. Therefore, libraries intend to disseminate their information through e-library platform. Accordingly, University of Kelaniya library initiated an E-library with number of E-databases, E-books, E-journal articles and necessary study materials. The purpose of this paper is to find out level of awareness and usage of E-library by members of academic staff in the University of Kelaniya. A questionnaire was used as the main method for data collection and was supplemented by interview. 178 questionnaires were distributed using stratified random sampling method and also a probabilistic equation to measure the sample size and the proportion of strata. Most of academic members use E-databases and E-journals to full fill their research needs and E-books are used for their learning and teaching activities. The findings revealed that the academic members of faculty of Sciences show the highest awareness and use of e-library services and lowest results belongs to the faculty of Humanities. It is observed that high awareness had led to high levels of usage of e-resources. It is recommended that more awareness programmes and hand on trainings should be arranged for the faculties identified.Item Effectiveness of computer usage for academic purposes among management students in Sri-Lankan universities (Western Province- Sri-Jayawardhanapura, Colombo & Kelaniya)(2012) Bodhinayaka, D.Sri-Lankan universities have commenced a number of professional courses to train the university students as needy managers and administrators for the country. Especially these universities have been empowered the process to the management faculties in order to create employment opportunities for their graduates. There has no adequate research been conducted yet to discuss this matter in a more factual manner. So, it was my intention to carryout a comprehensive research study on the topic. Today, modern technology and ICT were introduced at a full force and practiced in our education systems. Also, a major vital role is played in modern education by computer technology. The main objective of this study was to ascertain how students use the computer and ICT-Based systems effectively for their educational purposes. For this study, three major universities in the Western Province were selected namely; University of Sri-Jayawardhanapura, University of Colombo and University of Kelaniya. The data was collected through questionnaires, Interviews & Case studies. For this study, 120 students were engaged randomly from the above mentioned three universities and were requested to fill the printed questionnaires. By the same time, 30 students and 15 selected lecturers from each faculty of Management have participated for the Interviews. The data was gathered through questionnaires and case studies and analyzed by using excel and results were visualized graphically through charts and tables. The conclusions of the study pinpointed that the use of computers can provide a number of benefits to the management education. Study also revealed that when the students use the computers for their educational activities a lot of constrains and difficulties were encountered. Because of their weaknesses in the usage of English language, computers, ICT and various related software etc., it was concluded that an effective workable remedial system is required to be adopted. It was further noticed that some percentage of Management students were capable of using computer technology and ICT very effectively. Finally, some workable suggestions were pinpointed in this research study according to the findings from interviewing those management students and lecturers of the respective Faculties of Management and highlighted for further actions by Academics and the Administrators concerned.Item Identification the benefits of Library Automation in Sri Lankan Universities. (Kelaniya, Colombo & Moratuwa Universities)(The Research Center for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2012) Bodhinayaka, D.Never before in the history of the world have there been so dramatic changes in every aspect of human life, as ordinary people are experiencing today. Libraries and Information Centres too are rapidly changing and unlike the traditional libraries, the present libraries are equipped with a massive amount of information because of the technological advances and the changing patterns of user needs. Day by day, moment by moment, knowledge of man is increasing and available information is on the increase. The rapid growth and uses of emerging technologies has changed the traditional library into automated, electronic, virtual and digital library. This revolution has completely changed the library scenario, especially in an academic environment. The situation which mentioned above is common for university libraries also. Therefore, university libraries should deal with modern technology to give information for users very effectively. In this venture, library automation is very important for universities. The main objective of this study was to identify the importance and advantages of an automated library to fulfill information needs very effectively and to identify the problems faced by the universities in the process of automation. For this study, three major universities were selected namely, Moratuwa, Colombo and Kelaniya Universities. The data was collected through questionnaires and interviews. The population was staff members of the university libraries and library users. The sample was 15 staff members (Librarians & Department’s Heads of Acquisition, Technical Services, Reader Services and Periodicals division) and randomly selected 105 students. The data was analyzed by using excel and results were visualized graphically through charts and tables. The conclusions of the study pinpointed that there is a lot of advantages of automation in university libraries. The automation software which is using in these universities has streamlined cataloguing, circulation and acquisition functions including serials control. In addition, this automation software provide users unprecedented and fast access to information stored in regional and international databases including access to resources in other networked libraries, electronic journals and to full-text articles and journal titles from various databases as well as access to other bibliographic services and resources. Although these universities are using automation software packages they face a number of software problems and drawbacks. Finally, all respondents were given a chance to give their suggestions to overcome the problems they face in automating their library functions.Item An Investigation the Collections of Greek Literature in Sri Lankan University Libraries (Special Reference to Kelaniya University Library)(The Athen Institute for Education and Research, Greece., 2015) Rubasinghe, A.S.; Bodhinayaka, D.There are fifteen universities in Sri Lanka and all those Universities have well developed libraries also. Those libraries are giving sound knowledge to all university students and the staff as the library users for the growth their knowledge. All universities are conducting Sri Lankan and foreign education programs and it has launched the departments also to gain the knowledge for foreign languages, cultures, and more on behalf of Sri Lankan university students. Among them Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Greek, Hindi are the most important. Therefore all the Sri Lankan Universities had to develop their library collection regarding those subjects. According to that point it can be mentioned that all Sri Lankan university libraries have huge collections regarding the foreign literature also. The main objective of this paper was to identify the collection of Greek literature in Sri Lankan Universities and to identify the usage of Greek literature of Sri Lankans. Library of the University of Kelaniya was used to this study covering the Western province and used the observation methods to collect the data. According to observations it can be identified that there is a huge collection of Greek literature in Kelaniya University library. There are 31 departments in the Kelaniya University and especially students and lecturers of Archaeology and Sinhala are referring the Greek literature to full fill their academic purposes. Department of Sinhala is teaching the Greek literature as a core subject. Students and lecturers of faculty of Humanities are referring the collection of Greek literature than other faculty members of University of Kelaniya.Item A Study on the Effectiveness of Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) of Kelaniya University Library, Sri Lanka(2015) Lal, U.A.; Bodhinayaka, D.The University of Kelaniya library established in 1956 with the amalgamation of the Vidyalankara Pirivena In 1977, library started their services with a manual system. At present Kelaniya university has a fully integrated library management system and use Libsys database with Cataloguing, Circulation, Acquisition, Serial Control and Web OPAC modules. Among all these automated modules OPAC is a very important module. But most of users are not aware of this service provided by the University library. But, it is obvious that library services not up to the required level with an efficient service through the OPAC module to the users. This paper examines the usage of Online Public Access Catalogby the students of Kelaniya University of Sri Lanka. OPAC, which is an information retrieval system, has revolutionized access to bibliographic information through the search options with a keyword such as Boolean, truncation, proximity, and item identity number searching. The main objective of this research was to search the effectiveness of Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) in the library of University of Klaniya, Sri Lanka. A questionnaire-based survey was conducted with faculty members, research scholars and postgraduate students, covering different disciplines such as Sciences, Applied Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities. The paper discussed various aspects of OPAC such as frequency of use, purpose, ease of use, satisfaction level, etc. An attempt was also made to explore the reasons for the least used search options of the OPAC. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS based on the findings. It can be revealed that a significant number of users search information and library material through the OPAC. Lack of basic skills among users was found to be the major reason for less usage of the full features of the OPAC. It is suggested that University library should organize quality instructional programs to improve knowledge and skills of the users.Item A Study on the Usage of Library Versus Internet as Sources of Information by Undergraduate Students of University Kelaniya: with Special Reference to Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences, Science and Commerce & Management Studies(Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Ranaweera, A.; Rubashinghe, S.; Priyangika, S.; Bodhinayaka, D.The library of the University of Kelaniya plays a significant role to support learning, teaching and research activities of the academic community by providing print and e-resources. As at July, 2016 the library of the University of Kelaniya comprised of 250301 printed books, 2157 CD-ROMs, 1203 theses and 800 non-book materials. In addition, the library has subscribed to 60 local journals and access to provide over 12,500 full text academic journals and 100,000 ebooks. At present library usage patterns and information seeking behaviors of undergraduates have been change due to the introduction of Wifi facilities for students and changes of the courses modules, curriculums and teaching methods of the university education system. Both academic staff and students have adopted and continue to use the online information retrieval for their academic and research work. This study aims to compare the usage of library and the Internet to find information sources in the faculties of Humanities, Social Sciences, Science and Commerce & Management in the University of Kelaniya. This research attempts to determine the factors of enthusiasm and the disinterest of students on using library and Internet. All the undergraduate students in the University which is 8440 (as at August 2016) were taken as the study population and 368 students were selected as the sample by using Krejcie and Morgan method. The quantitative data were analyzed by using Descriptive Statistical Method. Findings, of the study indicated that undergraduate students of all the selected faculties use both the library and the Internet to fulfill their information needs. The students of faculty of Science and faculty of Commerce & Management selected Internet as the most preferred source of information.
