Review on the Effect of Oral Administration of Two Different Oils in Hyperlipidemia Patients
(03rd International Conference on Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Traditional Medicine, Institute of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo, 2008) Dharmasena, K.N.A.; Dissanayake, K.G.C.
Hyperlipidemia is one of the health burdens in the world. As per the Ayurveda classics, it can be co-related with Medoroga. Ayurveda perspectives and scientific studies have shown effectiveness Of Virechana on Hyperlipidemia: nevertheless, oil ingestion in high doses is mandatory before Virechana. Still it is controversial on Hyperlipidemia patients. This is an attempt to rectify the Oil ingestion and discuss the efficacy Of two commonly used oils; ghee & sesame oil on hyperlipidemia by compilation of pharmacological, Bio-chemical and Theraprutic attributes. Hence, it was designed to cover the literature of modern scientific findings. Studies have shown a significant lowering of cholesterol by ingested oil as not seated in body tissues. Eventually, enhancing digestion and lowering lipoprotems in the blood. As Ayurveda pharmacology sesame has Madura, KashayaRasas, sukshma ,Vyavai , Laghu , UshanGunas, UshnaVeerya, Madura Vipaka properties. Ghee has Madura Rasa, Guru, Snigda, SheethaGunas, SheetaVeerya,MaduraVipakaproperties. As analysis 47.8% Saturated fatty acids (FA), 15%- 18% Monosaturated FA,3% - 6% polyunsaturated FA. But sesame oil contain 39.7% MonounsaturatedFA, 41.7% polyunsaturated FA , 14.2%saturated FA. Treatment principles of Medoroga emphasized to manage with Lagu, Ruksha,Ushna food and medicines.Considering the properties of both oils, Sesame oil is suitable for treating Medoroga. Bio-chemically sesame oil has PolyunsaturatedFA than ghee, which exerts hypocholestremia. Study reveals a potent hypocholestremic effect on oil administration, which replenish by Sesame oil comparing to ghee. Further Extensive investigation is mandatory to have a deeper insight of this phenomenon.

Terminalia arjana as A Cardiac Endurance Enhancer for Optimal Performance of Athletes
(International Conference on Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Traditional Medicine, Institute of Indigenous Medicine, University of Colombo (4th ICAUST 2016), 2016) Dharmasena, K.N.A.; Dissanayake, K.G.C.
One in two hundred thousand of young athletes die due to abrupt onset of ventricular tachycardia or fibrillation in competitive sports era. Hence cardiovascular endurance has a significant role in performances Of sports. The utility Of Arjuna in various cardiovascular diseases has turned in to cardiovascular endurance enhancer in sports medicine. Terminalia arjuna, commonly known as,4rjuna, belongs to the family of Combretaceae. It is considered as one Of the Hrdya dravya in Ayurveda. The present review is an effort to give a detailed survey of the literature summarizing the experimental and clinical studies pertinent to Arjuna in cardiovascular endurance, which were particularly performed during the last decade. The main used part of Arjunu in cardiovascular disorders is bark, bark decoction With milk. Arjuna has Pungent taste, Lagu, Ruksha Guna, Sheetha Veerya, Katu Vipaka and Hrdya (Cardio protective as the special action. Studles have showed active compounds of bark stem as phytosterol, flavonoida, phcnolic Lannlns and possess diuretic, inotropic, anti- ischemic, hypo-lipidemic, anti-hypertrophicproperties. It increases the coronary flow, force of contraction of cardiac muscle, induces myocardial heat shock proteins and augments myocardial endogenous antioxidants which offer cardio-protection against oxidative stress. Study reveals 4.9 % increase maximum 02 consumption (voz max), 4.2% decrease in systolic blood pressure, 3.6 % increase in average absolute power of lower limbs with 8 week supplementation of bark extracts. In spite of this, elevated cardiac biomarkers due to transient acute volume overload Of the atna and right ventricle, transient reductions in right ventricular ejection fractlon arenormalize within 7 to 10 days. These advancements in findings of Arjuna Can are used as cardiac endurance enhancer in exercise. However, major lacunae Of these studies include the lack of phytochemical standardization of the extract, bioavailability studies and well-designed studies to evaluate its long-term toxicity effects.
