Item Creating Critical Theory Using Cinema-Semiotics For The Music Video Art(Proceedings of the Undergraduate Research Symposium (HUG 2018), Department of English Language Teaching, Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Fernando, D.C.V.Music video is considered a new art form in this era of digital media but it is a debate whether music video is an art form or merely popular commercialized industry. Although most of the music videos are only fan based commercialized videos, still there are many music videos which can be called as a piece of art because of their aesthetic approach. The art of music video is a collaboration of three major art mediums which are literature (lyrics and scripts), music and visual language. Andre Barters and Vladimir Props introduced the structure of the music video. Christian Metz, Roland Bath developed a cinema-semiotics for the film. Using Christian Metz cinema semiotics, we can create a suitable critical theory for music video art because both mediums share similarities in terms of structure. The structure of the music video contains visual language based on cinema semiotics, symbolism, the type of the editing rhythm. The content of the structure should always lead to the main concept of the song. The lyrics, the script and the story of the music video are the foundations of the content of the music video. This content leads to the philosophy and the ideology in the content music video. As any other art form, music video art also has that potential to express the philosophical and ideological content. In conclusion it is clear that there is a gap in the critical theory for music video art and using cinema semiotics there is potential in creating critical theory for music video art.Item Issues related to the Land use and Water Resource Management in Sri Lanka (A case study of Mi Oya River basin in Kurunegala District)(Department of Social Statisctics, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2020) Madhumali, H.S.; Munasinghe, D.S.A.; Manamperi, S.B.; Fernando, D.C.V.The radial network of rivers begins in Central highlands in Sri Lanka. About 103 distinct river basins are covering 90 percent of the island. The Southwest quarter of the island has seven major basins including Kelani Ganga, Kalu Ganga, Maha oya, Attanagalu oya, Gin Ganga, Nilwala Ganga, and Bentota Ganga. Accordingly, river basins are the most significant ecosystem in biodiversity at present. As well as the problems of managing water efficiency and equitably have become an urgent policy and research issue in recent years for Sri Lanka. Due to river basins are more efficient in rural development of the country, it is very important to have a proper management procedure in order to address the issues of land use and water resource practices in Sri Lanka. This study aims to identify the issues related to land use and water resource management for the proper land and water utilization practices in Mi Oya river basin while research questions seek the answers for issues regarding land use and water resource management. Both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods used through the questionnaires, observations, structural, and semi-structured interviews. Among the descriptive and statistical data analytical methods, statistical analysis is highly used for the data analysis and discussion. The results revealed that paddy cultivation is the major land use practice and livelihood method in this area based on Mi Oya. But due to the lack of enough water condition and brackish water, paddy cultivation has to do only one season among the Yala, Maha and Intermediate season and it’s become non-profitable also. Therefore, the identification of additional water resources and water purifying can be identified as effective solutions for the recognized issues in this case study.Item Use of Sexuality and Barbarity in Contemporary Television Series with Special Reference to ‘Game of Thrones’ & ‘Dexter’(Drama & Theatre and Image Arts Unit, Department of Fine Arts, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Fernando, D.C.V.In the contemporary world, the genre of the Television Series has become one of the most popular forms of art. Scenes with sexuality and the barbarity are frequently used in TV series. Sexuality is a cultural response to biological needs. Different types of sexual activities can be found in TV shows like sadism, machoism, voyeurism etc. Extreme cruelty and uncivilized behavior are called as barbarity, which is used by western world to make a distinction between them and primitive cultures. Barbarity and violence go hand in hand, which is very common in TV shows. Sexuality and barbarity seem to have a cross-cultural appeal, a fact crucially exploited by the capitalist entertainment industry. This research explores the use of sexuality and barbarity in the popular TV series from a psychological and postmodern perspective. In this study my main focus is with HBO’s “Game of Thrones” & Showtime’s “Dexter” as these two are based on two different societies and meanwhile they have reached top ratings as well. The study is based on postmodern theory on art, psychological references and television statistics. The visuals of sexuality and barbarity have enough force to satisfy and fulfill the hidden uncivilized desires and sexual dreams of civilized men through awaking them. Thus, main objective of my study is to discover the way sex and barbarity are portrayed in contemporary TV series and to examine whether they are used as a tool to hold the popularity of the show.
