Item Children and cinema: The Prominence and Effectiveness of Cultural Values in Child Cinema(4th International Conference on Social Sciences 2018, Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Hettiarachchi, K.S.T.; Gunasekara, H.N.W .Commonly held standards on which a complete community depends are named as cultural values. If further elaborated, cultural values are categorized into three main segments such as, customs (traditions and rituals), values (beliefs), culture (clothing, food, language etc.). It can be clearly seen that cultural values and the society are strongly connected with each other, as pre-mentioned, the community depends on cultural values. When discussing about the society, children are considered as the future generation of the community. Generally, a young human being below the age of puberty or below the age of majority of the community is considered as a child. However, as children are considered as the future generation of the society, it can be seen that, cultural values play an important role in their lives. This research paper examines the portrayal of the cultural values in children’s movies and its effect on lives of children. Children’s cinema is a medium of communication among adults and children. In addition, it is a sub-form of children’s literature and entertainment. However, these children’s movies are used as a subtle source of transmitting messages from adults to children. Cultural values play a major role in this medium as the future generation should have knowledge on their identical cultural values. This comparative study mainly focuses on how cultural values are portrayed in child cinema. Two culturally different children’s movies are selected to investigate the research problem; “How effectively cultural values are portrayed in the children’s movies and how portrayed cultural values in child cinema affect lives of children?” “Ho Ghana Pokuna” and “Les Vacances du petit Nicholas” are the movies selected as the research resources. These two movies represent Sri Lankan and French cultural values respectively. Moreover, as the chosen subject area is wide, few themes are selected to represent cultural values, namely; language, attire, beliefs and human bonds (family, friends etc.).The data analysis of the research study affirms that cultural values are important in building up society and humanity. Further it elaborates how effectively cultural values are portrayed in these two movies and the impact it causes in children’s lives. Moreover, this research study manages to evoke how the language, behaviour and believes of the focused audience; who are children, change after watching children’s movies for a period of time. It can be clearly seen that culture and the society are strongly connected with each other. When discussing about a country, culture is considered as a measurement of the identity of the particular country. Art is a part of the culture that adds uniqueness to a country's identity. In this research paper the author tries to portray the evolution of Sri Lankan culture by using one of artistic methods, which is music videos. Creating a video for the songs are now considered as a trend in Sri Lankan music industry, mainly to attract the audience. Sri Lankan music videos are a medium of communication which transmits messages to the society. Moreover, it plays a major role in the lives of people as it is a sub-form of entertainment. In this research study, the author discusses about the portrayal of the marriage and also the change of the clothing of Sri Lankans through music Videos. Furthermore, the author chose music videos of two generations to depict the difference of the aforementioned cultural aspects in time to time. Culturally different music videos from the eighteenth century and the twenty first century are selected to investigate the research problem "how effectively the evolution of culture is portrayed in the Sri Lankan music videos ". Two music videos which depict marriage and the way of clothing are selected from each of the mentioned two generations as research resources. The comparative analysis of data in the research affirms that music videos are important in portraying the culture of a country and shows its visible changing nature from a generation to a generation. Furthermore, this research study manages to discuss how these music videos can affect the way of living of people. Thus, it can be concluded that, the Sri Lankan music videos attempt to portray the cultural aspects of the country to the world.Item A Study on the Necessity of Implementing Online Programs for Higher Educational Institutes in Sri Lanka(International Postgraduate Research Conference 2019, Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Muthugamage, C.D.; Deepani, E.A.T.; Hettiarachchi, K.S.T.Generally, education is considered as a factor which moulds an individual to a professional. Conventional education refers to long-established customs that society traditionally used in educational institutes. In Sri Lanka, education for both secondary and tertiary education still depends on routine physical attendance of students in classroom activities. When considering the higher education in Sri Lanka, in most of the situations, working professionals face various constraints in continuing their further studies. As a result of this issue, a knowledge gap is created. However, with the passage of the time and with transformation of the teaching and learning methods in education, technology received a high demand in the educational sector. Moreover, in the contemporary world, there is a trend for online programs which can fill the aforementioned gap. This research study examines the necessity of implementing online programs in Sri Lankan higher educational institutes. As the targeted population is considerably high sample has been selected from National Institute of Business Management and has been narrowed down to the students graduated from School of Computing and School of Business in the year of 2018. Due to complexity of studying, the sampling has been limited to 250 graduates. A questionnaire was circulated among randomly selected 50 (25 each) graduated-working professionals of National Institute of Business Management and using random sampling method. They are asked to recirculate the provided questionnaire among five colleagues in the same organization from different higher educational institutes in Sri Lanka. The data analysis method used in the research study is regression analysis. The results of the research study revealed that the demand for the online programs among the working professionals is high due to many advantages that they can fulfill. Moreover, the findings indicate the factors (independent variables); self-efficacy, social influence, user satisfaction, quality of information and academic relevance. Based on the factors the findings indicate that there is a strong effect on the demand for online programs in multi-disciplines
