Growth of Urbanization and Decandance of Urban Agriculture: Threaten to Economy and Ecology
    (2011) Das, B.; Jariya, A.M.I.
Sustainable development is now considered as true development where urban agriculture plays a significant role. Urban agriculture should go in its own corridor without creating any industrial base on it. Industrialization, which is acause urbanization, should grow on wastelands, i.e. the unutilized lands either remaining idle or used by slum dwellers for residential purpose. Creation of residential colony on wastelands creates environmental and social hazards either directly or indirectly. Moreover, it creates a great loss for the agricultural sector in rural areas. Due to the growth of urbanization, slums are growing on in an increasing rate which indirectly encourages the migration of rural people to urban area. The dominance of industry helps to grow the urbanization and put a question on sustainable development. If wastelands could have been used for industrial purposes and the agricultural lands for agricultural activities only, then sustainable development could be hoped.Under this background, the present study attempts to find out the consequence of industrial sector dominance over the urban agricultural sector. For the purpose, a field study was conducted taking 100 land owners, who had already sold their urban land for different purposes, as sample. The owners are interviewed by a pre-designed questionnaire. To test the hypothesis, X 2(Chi-square) test was used and finally, suggestions are made to improve urban agriculture for sustainable development.
