Item Efficacy of Dummaladi lepa on fissuring in Vipadika(Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Jayakody, J.A.D.P.P.; Abegunasekara, N.S."Vipadika" is a dry skin disease on feet with severe itching and pain, This study was aimed to determine the efficacy of "Dummaladi lepa" which is very safe, effective and curative external mode of therapy without side effects. Thirty patients with symptoms of Vipadika were randomly selected from dermatology clinic at the outpatient unit of Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Teaching Hospital. All the patients were randomly divided into two groups as Group A and Group B. Both groups were given Patola katukabhiru Kashaya, Kaishora guggulu and Sukumara choorna as internal medicine. In addition, Group A was given Dummaladi lepa to apply on feet. Assessment was done through observation of signs and symptoms before and after the treatment. The follow up period was 21 days. Fissuring was recorded throughout the follow up period. Efficacy of the "Dummaladi lepa" was evaluated using the severity of the symptoms. Severity of the symptom was rated using a five point scale. Results indicated that Group A has shown a significant decline of severity on fissuring after 21 days. According to the analysis all the P values of the Group A in the comparison of before and after three weeks were less than 0.05.The study revealed that Dummaladi lepa can be used as an effective herbal cream for fissuring in Vipadika.Item Efficacy of Sarjarsadilepa in Vipadika –A clinical study(ÄRYAVAIDYAN, 2016) Abegunasekara, N.S.; Jayakody, J.A.D.P.P.Vipädika, a dry skin disease characterized by severe itching and intense pain in feet or palms, is considered as one Of the k$udraku$ha in äyurveda. A research was conducted to find out the efficacy Of a herbal cream in the management Of vipädika. 30 patients randomly selected from the dermatology clinic, OP unit of Garnpaha Wickramarachchi Ayurvedic teaching Hospital, Sri Lanka, were equally divided into two groups. Both the groups were given some selected äyurvedic preparations internally. In addition. group was prescribed Sarjarasädi lepa (known as Dummalädi lepa in Sri Lanka) for external application. The results showed significant decline in severity Of pain, fissuring, itching and eruptions after three weeks in group Comparative analysis before and after three weeks in group showed 'p' values less than 0.05. The study revealed that the trial drug is an effective herbal cream in vipädika.Item Evaluation of the effect of herbal formula mentioned in Bhaisajya Rathnavali in the management of Pityriasis versicolor(Young Ayurveda Researchers' and Innovators' Symposium (YARIS – 2019), Institutional Research Committee, Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute, University of Kelaniya, Yakkala, Sri Lanka, 2019) Dissanayake, A.M.S.H.; Jayakody, J.A.D.P.P.Tinea versicolor is a frequent benign superficial fungal infection of the skin. It belongs to Malassezia related disease. Clinical features of Tinea versicolor include either hyperpigmented or hypopigmented finely scaly macules. The most frequently affected sites are the trunk, neck and proximal extremities. However, long term maintenances of treatment is often required due to its high recurrence rate. Tinea versicolar is generally asymptomatic although some patients experience mild pruritus. This study was designed to assess the effect and efficacy of an herbal formula cream including Saussurea lappa, Raphanus sativus, Brassica juncea, Curcuma longa, Mesua ferrea, Callicarpa macrophylla Vah and cow’s urine which was a safe and effective external therapy for Pityriasis versicolor. This study assessed on the distribution pattern in relation to age, gender, affected region, occupations and chronicity among Tinea versicolor patients. Also size, colour, clinical form and itching of the affected area were assessed and effect of the treatment was measured through a well-defined grading system in term of selected reliving parameters. Thirty patients participated in the study, who were randomly divided in to two groups as group A and B. Group A was given herbal formula cream and Group B was given Charmakathi lepa. Patients were advised to refrain from any other treatment for Tinea versicolar. Follow up period was four weeks. When considering the P values, test group P value for size, colour, itching and clinical form were < 0.05. In control group, P value < 0.05 for itching and P value > 0.05 for size and colour and clinical form. Therefore, it can be concluded that herbal formula cream is more effective than Charmakanthi lepa in the management of Tinea versicolarItem Evaluation of the efficacy of ‘Nimbadi Lepa’ with ‘Pinda oil’ in the management of scaling condition of Psoriasis (Sidhma Kushta)(Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Wijesinghe, W.A.M.S.; Jayakody, J.A.D.P.P.; Senevirathne, K.N.Psoriasis is a skin disease that causes itchy or sore patches of thick, red skin with silvery scales. Usually, the patches appear on elbows, knees, scalp, back, face, palms and feet, but can show up on other parts of body too. This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of Nimbādi lepa with Pinda oil in the management of scaling condition of the psoriasis.Study was carried out at Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ᾱyurveda Teaching Hospital,Yakkala.Sixty patients in age between 16-70 years were selected who were randomly divided into three groups A, B and C. All were given selected Ᾱyurveda regimen as an internal mode of therapy. In addition, separate external applications EA1, EB2 and EC3, were given for each group, for a period of one month. Healing effect was monitored by observing the clinical symptom of scaling.. Data were collected by using PASI scale. Clinical outcomes were statistically analyzed using Wilcoxon Sign Rank test and Minitab (V14). All the treatments showed positive response for the symptom of scaling. (P-value = 0.019 for Group A, P-value=0.023for Group B,P-value=0.019 for Group C).Healing effect in each group as percentage was as follows: group A=21%,group B=20%, and group C=50%.Considering all three treatments EC3 Nimbadi lepa with Pinda oil can be recommended as effective external application for the management of scaling of Psoriasis.Item Evaluation of the efficacy of Dummaladi lepa in the management of Vipadika(2nd International Conference on Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Traditional medicine(2nd ICAUST), 2014) Abegunasekara, N.S.; Jayakody, J.A.D.P.P."Vipadika" is horrible itching, paining, dry skin disease which is occurred in feet. This research was considered about the effect of an herbal cream that can be used for Vipadika. 30 patients were randomly selected on the basis of the inclusion criteria from dermatology clinic at the outside patient unit of Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurvedic teaching hospital. Al1 the patients were randomly divided into two equal groups as Group A and Group B. Both groups were given the selected ayurveda modalities as intemal medicine. In addition to group A was given "Dummaladi lepa" as an external application.Assessment was done through observation of signs and symptoms before and after the treatment. The follow up period was 21 days. Pain, Fissuring, Itching and Eruptions were recorded throughout the follow up period. They were taken to the account for the evaluation and severity of the symptoms were rated using five point scales.The results indicate that Group A has shown a significant decline of severity on pain, flssuring, itching and eruptions after three weeks. According to the analysis all the P values of the Group A in the comparison of before and after three weeks were less than 0.05.The study revealed that Dummaladi lepa is an effective herbal cream for Vipadika.Item Evaluation of the efficacy of three Ayurveda regimens in the management of Sidhamakushta on the head (Psoriasis on the head)(Culture, Globalization and the Developing World, 2nd ICSS, 2013) Jayakody, J.A.D.P.P.; Senaviratne, K.N.; Akarawita, J.K.W.Sidhamakushta is a disease explained in Ayurveda which shows many similar features of Psoriasis. Main symptoms of this disease are the skin inflammation and appearance of silvery white scales. This disease is generally known as ?Potukabara? in Sri Lanka. It can affect any part of the human body. Most often discrete lesions are found on the upper parts of the body. This study aimed at evaluating the efficacy of three Ayurveda regimens in the management of Sidhamakushta on head. The study was carried out at the dermatology clinic of Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Teaching Hospital, Yakkala, Sri Lanka. Hundred and five (105) patients were randomly selected based on a pre -determined inclusion criteria and they were divided into three equal groups, A, B and C. The three groups were given the selected Ayurveda modalities as an internal mode of therapy. In addition, each group was given separate external treatments as an external mode of therapy. The patients of group A, B and C were given EA1 EB2 and EC3 respectively as the external treatment. Healing effect was monitored by observing itching, scaling, redness, thickness and the surface area of the lesion. The follow up period was three months. Data were collected by using PASI score. Clinical outcomes were statistically analyzed using SPSS (V13) and Minitab (V14). Among three groups, a significant drop of surface area of the head of the patients after the first week of receiving treatment can be observed in group B. The recorded drop is from 5.66 percent to 5.21 percent.(p-value = 0.001) All the treatments given to three groups started positively responded from the first week for the symptoms such as itching and scaling with respect to patient?s head. (p-valus = 0.000 for group each group) Group A and B have shown a significant healing effect on redness and thickness after the first week. (p-valus = 0.000 for group A and B). In conclusion group B showed the fastest healing effect based on all four symptoms.Item A pilot study on the effect of Śvitra lepa in the management of Śvitra (Vitiligo)(Young Ayurveda Researchers' and Innovators' Symposium (YARIS – 2019), Institutional Research Committee, Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute, University of Kelaniya, Yakkala, Sri Lanka, 2019) Jayasooriya, L.B.D.M.; Jayakody, J.A.D.P.P.The disease Śvitra is described as vitiligo in modern concept. Vitiligo is characterized by depigmentation of the skin, where circumscribed depigmented macules and patches can be seen. Vitiligo is a progressive disorder in which some or all of the melanocytes in the affected skin are selectively destroyed. Both internal applications and external applications have been prescribed in Ayurveda texts. Śāraṅgadara Saṃhitā and Sri Lankan Ayurveda pharmacopeia mentioned Śvitra lepa as treatment for Śvitra. It consists of Harithāla, Bākucī and Cow’s urine. The aim of the research was to assess the effect of Śvitra lepa in the management of Śvitra. For this clinical study, thirty patients were selected from Dermatology Clinic of Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Hospital. The selected patients were randomly assigned into two groups (Group A and B) consisting of fifteen patients for each. Two groups were given selected Ayurveda modality as a systemic therapy. Topical therapies were given separately; viz group A was treated with Śvitra lepa and group B was treated with Bākucī oil. The parameters of this research such as size of patches, number of patches, colour of affected area, itching condition and spot formation were examined in every 14 days for a period of three months. Patients of Group A showed reduction of vitiliginous patches in comparison to the same parameters such as size of patches, colour of affected area, Spot formation before treatment where it showed statistically significant difference. The patients of Group B showed significant difference only for spot formation on the vitiliginous patches. The study revealed that Śvitra lepa is effective in the management of Śvitra.Item Role of three Ayurveda regimen in the management of scaling condition of Sidhma Kushta (Psoriasis).(Department of Shalya Shalakya,Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute,University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka, 2017) Jayakody, J.A.D.P.P.; Seneviratna, N.A.K.P.J.; Akarawita, J.K.W.Psoriasis, generally referred to as 'Potu Kabara' in Sri Lanka, corresponds with Sidhma Kushta in terms of a number of distinguished symptoms elaborated in Ayurveda classics. This study aimed at evaluating the efcacy of three Ayurveda regimen in the management of scaling condition of Sidhma Kushta. The study was carried out at the skin clinic of Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Teaching Hospital, Yakkala, Sri Lanka. One hundred and ve patients were selected and randomly divided into three equal groups; A, B and C. All were given selected Ayurveda regimen as an internal mode of therapy while separate external applications viz. EA1 (Takradhara), EB2 (Takra Lepa) and EC3 (Raw herbals boil water) were given separately for each group for a period of three months. Healing effect was monitored by observing the clinical symptom of scaling. Data were collected by using PASI scale. Clinical outcomes were statistically analyzed using a non-parametric test, Wilcoxon Sign Rank Test and parametric tests such as ANOVA, Paired t-test, Pooled t-test. All the treatments given in three groups positively responded from the rst week for the symptom of scaling of the patient's head, upper limb, trunk and lower limb. (P-value 0.000 for each group). It can be concluded that all three treatments can be effectively used in the management of the symptom of scaling.Item Selective Ayurveda Treatment Modality for Lichen Planus (Vishaja Kushtha) – a Case Study(International Conference on Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha and Traditional Medicine (5th ICAUST 2017), 2017) Perera, K.P.D.C.; Dissanayake, K.G.C.; Jayakody, J.A.D.P.P.Lichen planus is common inflammatory disorder of the skin. It is estimated to effect 0.5% to 2.0% of the general population. It is an autoimmune disease affecting mucosal and cutaneous tissue. This condition associated with purplish colored pruritic lesions or bumps with flat tops and thin white lines over the rash. Lesions develop and spread over the body. In allopathic system of medicine steroids have been the drugs of choice for this condition. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs also have less beneficial effects. Steroidal drugs have so many side effects and contraindications. In Ayurveda treatments, there are various treatment modalities that have been designed to treat effectively for Vishaja Kushtha. This case study developed to evaluate the efficacy of a sequential combined purification therapy (Vamana and Virechana) with Shamana treatment in order to control this condition without adverse effects. A ease detail was taken from the Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Teaching Hospital. The patient was 42 years of age female. She had been suffering with generalized pruritic popular rash for one month and had been diagnosed as Lichen Planus in 2016. According to Ayurveda, this skin condition diagnosed as a type of Vishaja Kushlha and treatments started with body purification procedures along with Raktashodhaka and Vishaghnacikitsa internally and externally. Photographs of the affected skin were taken at the time of initiation of the treatment and subsequently on every week. When compared the before and after treatment photographs, shows a considerable improvement in the skin lesions. Sequential combined internal and external medications along with Ayurveda Shodhana therapy completely managed the Lichen Planus without adverse effects.Item A study on the effect of dietary and behavioral patterns of the patients in the management of Sidhma Kushta (Psoriasis)(University of Kelaniya, 2008) Jayakody, J.A.D.P.P.Item Survey on ethnomedicinal uses of Eriocaulon ceylanicum in a selected division in Kuliyapitiya(Faculty of Science, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Wijesinghe, W.A.M.S.; Jayakody, J.A.D.P.P.Therapeutic effects and medicinal efficacy of the wild herbs were identified and administered by the ancient people to cure various ailments.Recently, the practice of herbal medicine has been diminishing, which may lead to the loss of valuable informations about healing herbs. There are many medicinal plants grown in semievergreen forests of Sri Lanka. This present study attempts to identify the use of traditional medicine and medicinal uses of Eriocaulon ceylanicum. A questionnaire survey was provided to randomly selected 200 people, of age between 30-80 years in Deegalla division located in Kuliyapitiya, West region of Kurunegla district. Study showed that only 36.5% of the respondents out of 200 were utilizing Eriocaulon ceylanicum for various ailments. Regarding the preparation method, 78.08% used the plant in fresh condition, 15.07% used both fresh and dry forms and 6.85% in dry form. According to the way of practicing, 60.28% used this plant as a source of food and 39.72% used as a remedy. Among those who utilized this plant as a remedy, it was used to treat Malnutrition (Māndama) (37.93%), burning sensation during urination (Mutra dāha ) (24.14%), leucorrhoea (Sweta pradara) (20.69%), anemia (Pāndu) (6.9%), skin disorders( Kushta ) (6.9%) and orthopedic conditions (Bhagna) (3.45%). .According to the indigenous medicnal texts Eriocaulon ceylanicum can be used to treat a wide range of ailments like Liver diseases (Yakrit roga), Spleenomegaly (Pleehāvriddi), Jaundice (Kāmalā), Alcohol-toxicity (Madātya), Pith roga, Dāha, Rathpith, Thirst (Trishnā), Vāta roga,Unmāda, Prameha, Pradara and, Soma roga. Despite its significant contributions, traditional medicine in Sri Lanka has attracted very little attention in research and development, and less effort has been made to uplift the role of traditional medicine practice. Thus, extensive research on such traditional plants is of prime importance to scientifically validate their ethnomedical claims.Item Ᾱyurveda therapeutic intervention in the management of chronic plaque psoriasis - a case study(Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Jayakody, J.A.D.P.P.; Seneviratna, N.A.K.P.J.Psoriasis is a common immune mediated chronic skin disease that comes in different forms and varying levels of sevearity.In general, a condition that is frequently found in the knee, elbow, scalp, and toes. But Psoriasis can develop anywhere including the nails, palms, soles etc. Psoriasis most individuals who develop chronic Plaque Psoriasis will have the condition life long.Psoraitic arthropathy is a possible complication, occurring in about 5% of Psoriatic patients. Distal arthritis involves the terminal interphalangeal joints of the fingers and toes, especially those with marked nail changes. Management of Allopathic medicine concerned with control of disease rather than cure. There is an imagine recognition on the effectiveness of Ayurveda treatment in the management of Psoriasis. The study was carried out at Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ᾱyurveda Teaching Hospital to evaluate the efficacy of selected Ᾱyurveda regimen in the management of Psoriasis. The male patient was a 70 years old with a history of fifteen years, presented with the symptoms of chronic Plaque Psoriasis. The patient was treated with selected Ayurveda regimen the signs and symptoms were recorded according to the standard grading system. The clinical features were gradually reduced within three months. It can be concluded selected Ᾱyurveda regimen is effective successfully for this case.
