Hyperlipidemia is a major health problem at present. It is an independent risk factor for ischemic heart disease, cardiovascular disease and stroke. According to Ayurveda, hyperlipidemia is caused by imbalance of Agni and increase of Kapha and Medo Dhatu. Musta (Cyperus rotundus) has the effect of increasing Agni and Kapha Medaghna action. (Cha.Su.21/21-28). Toxicological studies of Musta have not shown any evidence of its' toxicity. Many studies have been carried out to nd out the hypolipidemic action of Musta using animals. However, up to date there is no any clinical evaluation undertaken to identify the effect of Musta powder on hyperlipidemia. Mental stress found to be a risk factor for hyperlipidemia. Shawasana and Anuloma Viloma Pranayama are said to be effective in reducing stress. Considering all the above facts Musta powder and Yoga were selected as an effective treatment in the management of Hyperlipidemia. The general objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of Mustapowder and Yoga in the management of Hyperlipidemia. It was a randomized, comparative clinical study with 50 selected hyperlipidemic patients from Swasthavritta clinic at Ayurveda Teaching Hospital, Borella.The patients were randomly divided in to two groups; A and B. In group A , 25 patients were treated with Musta powder and yoga practice for a period of two months with 01 month follow up period. In group B,25 patients were treated only with Musta powder. Group A was moderately effective (P<0.01) in reducing total cholesterol levels and effective in reducing LDL levels (P< 0.05). There was no any statistically signicant parameter in group B (P value > 0.05) on Lipid Prole. Comparative effect of this study was insignicant at P value > 0.05.Item Practices of Yoga in cardiovascular health(Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Karunaratne, H.K.B.M.S.Every year a large number of people die due to the complications of cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure, heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, peripheral artery disease and sudden cardiac arrest. Healthy eating, meditation and exercise are recommended lifestyle choices to prevent and reverse heart disease (American Heart Association). Increased blood pressure and cholesterol levels are major causes for cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, suitable practices of Yoga are very important to avoid these two major causes and prevent from mental stress. This study was conducted as a literature survey based on Hatha Yoga Pradipika to investigate the suitable practices of Yoga in cardiovascular health (on prevention and cure). According to the findings of the present study, 72% of Yoga Asanas (Yogic postures), 62.5% of Pranayama (Yogic breathing) exercises, 66.66% of Shat Karmas (purification techniques in Yoga) and 40% of Mudras (gestures) adopted during Asana, Pranayama and meditation that directs flow of energy into human body) and Bandhas (techniques used in Hatha Yoga associated with the practice of Yogic exercises and Asanas including muscular lock) were beneficial in preventing as well as curing cardiovascular diseases. Siddhasana, Gomukasana, Padma Mayurasana, Vajrasana and Bhadrasana have special effects in maintaining a healthy cardio vascular system. Nadi Shodhana Pranayama (alternate nostril breathing), Surya Bhedana Pranayama (right nostril breathing) and Ujjayi (conqueror breath pose) were found to be examples for suitable breathing exercises. Shambhavi Mudra (eyebrow center gazing), Nasikagra Mudra (nose tip gazing) and Bhramari (humming bee) Mudra were found to be suitable practices for cardiovascular health according to the results of the present study.Item Therapeutic effects of Yoga on the diseases of Śālākyatantra(Department of Shalya Shalakya,Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute,University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka, 2017) Kumara, G.U.A.; Karunaratne, H.K.B.M.S.Yoga, a philosophy in ancient India, is effective in maintaining health and curing diseases. This literature survey based on Hatha Yoga Pradipika was carried out in order to identify the therapeutic effect of Yoga on diseases which had been mentioned in Śālākyatantra. All types of Pranayama (Suryabhedana, Ujjayi, Seetkari, Sheetali, Bhramari, Bhastrika, Moorchha and Plavini pranayama) are important to maintain healthy respiratory functions, while sixty seven of Shatkarma have various therapeutic effects on curing diseases belonging to Śālākyatantra and thirty three of Mudra and Bandha in Hatha Yoga Pradipika have therapeutic effects on diseases that belong to Śālākyatantra according to the ndings of the present study. Although all the Asanas contribute to maintain healthy body, Simhagarjanasana (roaring lion pose) is the most effective in alleviation of such diseases including numerous throat, mouth, nose and ear disorders. It is particularly useful in toning the throat and eradicating stammering. Dhauti and Neti have many therapeutic effects in curing diseases in Śālākyatantra. Trataka has many therapeutic effects in curing eye disorders such as eye strain, myopia, astigmatism, and early stages of cataract, according to the ndings. It can be concluded that various types of Yoga have therapeutic effects on diseases which have been described in Śālākyatantra.Item Yoga Asana for Memory Enhancement (A Literary Survey)(4th Annual Research Conference TRInCo -2019, Trincomalee Campus, Eastern University, Sri Lanka, 2019) Abegunasekara, N.S.; Karunaratne, H.K.B.M.S.The practice of yoga includes static and dynamic postures (Asana), breathing manipulations (Pranayama and meditation (Dhyana). Yoga is a tool which works in the gross body level to the shuttle mind level. Yoga is a simple and inexpensive health regimen that can be incorporated as an effective adjuvant therapy for the improvement of brain and mental activity. This study was aimed to review scientific literatures related to yoga practice for memory enhancement. The results were analyzed using simple percentages. It is concluded that regular practice of yoga asana develops the physical and mental capabilities, which improves the memory power, grasping power and intelligence.
