This research used the qualitative approach and continued the study through the general qualitative method. Sample were selected based on the purposive sampling method. Accordingly, data collection was done through in-depth interviews with owners of six small businesses in the Talawakele - Lidula Municipal Council area in the Nuwara Eliya District. The data were analysed, and themes were derived using thematic analysis. The main mismanagement identified from the study was mismanaging start-up capital, cash flows, budgetary system, personal spending, retained earnings, and working capital. Due to these mismanagements, businesses cannot run with a proper plan. The findings of this study will enable small businesses to identify their financial mismanagement. These findings will also help policymakers to identify the areas that are required to improve the financial management literacy of small business owners.Item The Impact of Entrepreneurship Education on Small Businesses’ Performance(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Nimeshi, G.K.S.; Edirisinghe, S.D.For each country entrepreneurial venture segment is considered as a major important factor of productivity, employment and economic growth. A developing country like Sri Lanka requires entrepreneurs to stimulate the economy. However, given the Sri Lankan context, most of Sri Lankan entrepreneurs’ failure is due to lack of entrepreneurship education. While the number of entrepreneurship education programs is growing, their impact is under researched and studies paint an unclear picture of the impact of entrepreneurship education. Therefore this research study aims to contribute to the understanding of the impact of entrepreneurship education on the firm’s performance. According to the literature, firm performance can be measured by using financial and non-financial factors. In this study, three measures were identified under the financial factors according to past literature. Namely profit growth, sales growth, and return on investment. Additionally non-financial performance is measured by using factors such as, customer satisfaction, employee satisfaction, and owner satisfaction. The study also tests how this relationship varies with moderator variable, namely, gender. The study will be conducted in Sri Lankan context in Gampaha district. Proportionate random sampling technique will be used to select the sample of 150 small firms. A self-administered questionnaire will be used in this study as the research instrument. Both descriptive and inferential analytical tools will be used to analyze the data. The study will provide insight into the Sri Lankan context and it will contribute to understanding the importance of entrepreneurship education to owners of small firms.Item Personality and Undergraduate Performance: An Assessment of the Big Five Personality Model(Department of Commerce and Financial Management, Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Gunarathna, M.A.S.Y.; Gunewardana, W.N.N.; Gunewardana, W.N.N.; Imalka, K.D.S.P.; Nimeshi, G.K.S.; Ranwala, R.S.; Sarathchandra, K.S.H.; Silva, A.R.; Silva, M.T.M.The purpose of this paper is to investigate the relationship between Personality and Job Performance. In order to construct the above mentioned relationship with related to job performance we have used the dimensions of the big five personality model dimensions which are Extroversion, Conscientiousness, Emotional Stability, Open to Experience and Agreeableness. As the methodology, a questionnaire was used as the research instrument.Particularly, the study was conducted in the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, among the undergraduates of the Faculty of Commerce and Management studies. Multiple regression analysis of the study was used to prove the stated hypothesis of the study and the researcher concludes that the dimensions in the big five personality model make an impact on the job performance of the undergraduates. Finally, the researcher suggests the Job performance levels varies among high and low categories of Open to experience, Emotional Stability, Agreeableness, Extroversion and Conscientiousness.
