Conceptual Policy Framework for Urban Parks in Sri Lanka with special reference to the Diyatha Uyana Urban Park, Colombo
(University of Kelaniya, 2015) Oshani, P.A.L.; Wijethissa, K.G.C.P.
The study was undertaken by the researchers by focusing on the problem of the kind of policy framework suited to the establishment of urban park. While previous research exists on urban park participation, no studies have been undertaken on the policies pertaining to the setting up of such parks. The main objective of this study was to contribute to the creation of a conceptual policy framework for the Diyatha Uyana urban park The amount of visitor participation was identified as the independent variable while nine dependent variables were identified: the effects of environmental Noises, the effects of population, disturbance by others when engaging in physical exercises, the barriers to take photographs, the inadequacy of resources for exercise, the prohibitive rules and regulations, limitations of space in the park, inadequacy of signage and safety measures. Two moderate variables were identified as physical and emotional factors. Through a simple random sampling method 300 visitors were selected to participate in this study through a questionnaire survey and interviews. A five point Lickert scale was used for data collection, while data was analysed one way Anova. One of the main findings of the quantitative study is that the main problem faced by visitors to Diyatha Uyana is environmental noise. As the one way Anova significant value was 0.012, the researchers conducted a SWOT Analysis to identify the possibility of creating a policy framework. In conclusion, the researchers proposed a greewall policy to reduce noise, with the recommendation that the greenwall be increased in park areas. The researchers also recommended that the government should consider implementing a greenwall policy in order to develop Diyatha Uyana, as well as when creating new urban parks.

This study will ease the unscientific belief that most parents and teachers have the overweight persons are sluggish, lazy and sleepy; therefore would not do well in academic performance at the university. The objective was to determine the relationship between Body Mass Index and Academic Performance. A descriptive cross- Sectional design was used. The study was conducted in University of Kelaniya Sri Lanka for undergraduate students. The subject included a random selection of 2500 undergraduates. (198 Male and 251 Female). Actabit BMI calculator and grade point average (GPA) scores were used to collect data. BMI was calculated from each student‘s height and weight recordings. AP was determined by each student‘s cumulative university GPA. Researcher used cross-tabulation analysis from SPSS 21, to identify the relationship between both categorical and scale data. Chi-square test revealed significant differences in BMI and GPA. The descriptive results showed significant associations between BMI and AP (P<.001). According to the results we observed a strong association between the BMI and AP X2 (6) = 97.496, P=.000. This study demonstrated that normal weight had higher GPA scores than their overweight counterparts, underscoring the need to intensify interventions focused on reducing and preventing obesity among university population.

Ranking Cricket Players According to Their Efficiency of Performances: A Criterion Formulation for a Minimum Error Team Selection
(Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Ramanaka, A.R.N.D.; Bandara, K.A.W.P.; Wehigaldeniya, W.G.D.S.; Oshani, P.A.L.; Dilshani, P.Y.H.; Jayantha, K.
This research suggests a new criterion for cricket team selection using data envelopment analysis (DEA) with the objective of selecting a team which has a minimum error in team selection. It proposes a DEA formulation for evaluation of cricket players in different capabilities and their efficiencies of performance using multiple outputs. For instances, batting, bowling all rounding, wicket keeping, and fielding capabilities. This evaluation determines efficient and inefficient cricket players and ranks them on the basic of DEA scores. The ranking can be used to choose the required number of players for a cricket team in each cricketing capability. A real data set which belongs to Sri Lankan Cricket team during ICC world cup 2015 is associated with the data analysis process. Cricket players having various capabilities is used to choose the best cricket team. For this purpose, the secondary data were derived from “ESPN” cricinfo web site (Which is reputed web site for international cricket data). The proposed method has the advantage of considering multiple factors related to the performance of players in multiple capabilities and aggregates their scores using a DEA model in linear programming frame work. This DEA aggregation gives the scores of players objectively instead of using subjective computations. The findings of this study suggest that DEA has the potential to select players to the Cricket team fairly. There for these findings cane be used to player’s selection in local and national cricket team selection as objective selection criteria.
