Item The attitudes of villages on new zoo development in Pinnawala(The Research Center for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Rathnayake, M.V.R.M.S.Item Awareness of the Domestic Tourists on Historical Paintings at Dambulla Cave Temple(University of Kelaniya, 2015) Weerasingha, G.B.I.; Rathnayake, M.V.R.M.S.The Dambulla Cave Temple is in existence since 300 B.C. and has been occupied continuously until the present. The paintings at the site are considered the largest collection of ancient paintings in Sri Lanka. The site has attracted international tourists due to it being named a UNESCO World Heritage site while it has attracted domestic tourists due to its religious significance. Domestic tourists are not entirely aware of the historical and heritage value of the site or the paintings. This study focuses on the extent to which domestic visitors have been aware of the paintings of Dambulla Cave Temple. The main objective of the study was to identify the awareness, knowledge, and perception of the domestic visitors on the paintings. Another objective wasto identify the effectiveness of the information provided at the site for the domestic visitors. The research was based on field survey methodology where 50 domestic visitors were interviewed using structured questionnaires. The sample was randomly selected at the site and represented both the younger generation and senior citizens. Most of the domestic visitors lack knowledge of the historical value and they are not provided basic information on the paintings. The younger generation has acquired basic knowledge on the paintings unlike the senior citizens who have been attracted to the site only due to its religious value. Though the site management has implemented an adequate approach to information dissemination, most of the domestic visitors do not access this information. Domestic tourists needs to be provided with the services of local guidesin order to understand the value of the paintings.Item Beach Tourism and its Positive Environmental Impacts (Related to the Unawatuna coastal area)(Centre for Asian Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Rathnayake, M.V.R.M.S.Item Beach Tourism and its Positive Environmental Impacts (Related to Unawatuna coastal area)(Centre for Asian Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Rathnayake, M.V.R.M.S.Tourism is the main foreign exchange earning industry in Sri Lanka in present. Beach tourism is one of the main environmental tourism product, since tourism started as an industry in Sri Lanka. Still beach tourism is the main tourism product in Sri Lankan tourism industry. The main objective of this research was to identify the positive environmental impacts of beach tourism. Unawatuna selected as a study area for the research, because this area was famous among Europeans in colonial period and it is named as one of the best beaches in the world through international surveys. Unawatuna is highly engaged with tourism in past as well as present. Therefore many environmental impacts can be seen in this area. Field observations and interviews used as data collecting methods and analyzed those qualitative data. Environmental preservation projects such as turtle conservation, coastal area conservation, water state management projects etc, improving the quality of the beach, increase awareness and conservation of historical and archaeological valuable site of coastal area are the positive environmental impacts can be seen in Unawatuna. Good combination of private and public sector, creating awareness of tourists and community people, using sustainable tourism development such as methods can be used as recommendations for improve positive environmental impacts of study area.Item Heritage Tourism: Development of the Ramba Vihara Complex as a Tourist Attraction(University of Kelaniya, 2015) Sumangala Thero, Pahiyangala; Rathnayake, M.V.R.M.S.; Jayathilaka, J.A.I.Ramba Viharaya is situated in Ambalangoda, Hambanthota District. Large numbers of religious monuments have been spread over around this site. The problem of this study was “how to promote Ramba Viharaya as a tourist attraction for both foreign and domestic tourists?” Main objective of this study was implementation of suggestions to develop this site as a tourist attraction. This study was conducted through primary and secondary data collective methods. The research was based on structured interviews and field observations. Ramba Vihara complex was occupied by many Buddhist monks since historic times. There are different types of historical buildings such as Sannipathashala, chapter houses, image houses and Buddha statues, inscriptions, ponds, etc., are some of the historical monuments. When developing this site for tourism several weaknesses can be identified including lack of infrastructure facilities, lack of promotions, inadequate transport and sanitary facilities, lack of government involvement, vandalism, no proper visitor management plan. Still Ramba Viharaya has been neglected by the tourists due to unavailability of tourism promoting strategies. This study presents recommendations to overcome this situation and to develop the site as an attraction among the visitors. Providing sufficient infrastructure facilities, establishing sanitary and accessibility facilities, improving tourist awareness by promotional programs, introducing proper visitor management plan are some recommendations to promote the site as a minor attraction.Item Home Stay Concept in Sri Lanka and its Impacts (With special reference to Padavigampola Home Stay Village)(Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Rathnayake, M.V.R.M.S.Home Stay is one type of accommodation sectors in tourism industry. It allows to tourists stay with local families in the destination and become familiar with local style. Padavigampola Village is situated in Rambukkana, Kegalle district, Sabaragamuwa Province. It is the first home stay village in Sri Lanka. The objectives of this research were to identify both positive and negative effects of the home stay project and giving recommendations to promote home stay concept furthermore. Field observations, interviews, questionnaires used as data collecting methods and those collected data were analyzed analytically because both qualitative and quantitative data were gathered during the study. Most of villagers had a good attitude about this project because of the positive benefits. Creating job opportunities, community development, generating income for villagers, improve quality of life and ensure environmental sustainability are some positive benefits. Comparing the outcome of home stay concept, benefits are abundant rather than the negative impacts.
