Item An Analogy between Linguistics and Science: A comparative study(University of Kelaniya, 2015) Silva, S.U.T.Linguistics is the scientific study of language. It mainly comprises three aspects including language form, language meaning, and language in context. On the other hand, science involves the systematic study of the structure and behaviour of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. The main objective of this paper is to present diverse and multidirectional relationships between these two disciplines which are apparently separated from each other due to the fact that they belong to completely different domains. Therefore, the research problem that the researcherintended to investigate in this study is “What similarities do languages have with theories of science as far as their characteristics are concerned?” This study was conducted in three stages. In the initial stage of data collecting, the primary methodology infocus is to extract specific characteristics and virtues of scientific theories while investigating major breakthroughs in the history of science. Secondly, an attempt was made to link these fundamental qualities to features of language while identifying the linguistic approach that is hidden in scientific theories. Similarly, philosophical ideologies of Thomas Kuhn and Paul Feyerabend were analyzed with special attention. In the final stage, seven such characteristics were established while concluding the extent to which linguistics and science are similar in the core nature of their qualities. These conclusions are based purely on a qualitative analysiswhere an analogy is seen from a dynamic perspective.Item Impact of Climate change on Tourism in Sri Lanka: An Investigation(University of Kelaniya, 2015) Silva, S.U.T.Tourism is the act and process of spending time away from home in pursuit of recreation, relaxation, and pleasure, while making use of the commercial provision of services. It is further identified as a product of modern social arrangements. On the other hand, climate change refers to a change of climate which is attributed directly or indirectly to human activity that alters the composition of the global atmosphere and which is in addition to natural climate variability observed over comparable time periods. The objective of this paper is thus to investigate negatives of climate change on Sri Lankan tourism while pointing out how tourism itself becomes a culprit of unconventional climatic transformations. Therefore, the research problem that is intended to answer through this study is “How feasible it is to establish a climate friendly tourism in Sri Lanka?” This study was mainly conducted in three stages. In the initial stage of data collecting, primary methodology in focus is to delve in to several unhealthy climatic conditions especially in relation to Sri Lankan tourist industry and to gather facts such as their causes, their severity, their impact and etc. Next, some insight was put on to identify and analyze how tourism itself is responsible in causing such conditions. Thus, several eco-friendly methodologies that can be practically implemented were introduced in some depth while constructing a realistic supply chain that highly favors the environment. In the final concluding stage, obvious possibility of climate friendly tourism was seen on the basis of three important concepts: “Avoidance, Substitution and Offsetting”. These conclusions are purely based on a qualitative analysis where an attempt is taken to introduce techniques of optimization within tourist industry for a better economy.Item Literature as an inspiration for scientific thinking: An Investigation(Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Silva, S.U.T.Literature is defined as a body of written works. The name has traditionally been applied to those imaginative works of poetry and prose distinguished by the intentions of their authors and the perceived aesthetic excellence of their execution. On the other hand, Science is a creative study that originates in mind before moving forward to experimentation and verification. Thus, a possibility of a relationship can be seen between these two domains; Literature and Science. The main objective of this paper is therefore to identify the impact of literature towards scientific thinking as a source of inspiration to bridge the gap between imagination and reality. Thus, the research problem that is intended to investigate through this study is ―How influential are the stories of science for youngsters to succeed themselves as scientists‖. This study was mainly conducted in three stages. In the initial stage of data collecting, primary methodology in focus is to delve in to the lives of 15 highly successful scientists from a wide range of subject fields including physics, biology, mathematics, engineering, astronomy and etc. Data about inspirational literature were extracted considering their statements made during public lectures, interviews as well as concerning the experiences mentioned in their own publications. Secondly, an attempt was taken to analyze all these scenarios and they were classified in to three main categories depending on the reason of persuasion of these scientists to pursue a carrier in science. These three main reasons were revealed as extreme curiosity, desire to serve humanity and the passion of challenging established perspectives. Finally, in the concluding stage, several conclusions were made based on a qualitative analysis while seeing the stimulation of literature on scientific thinking.
