AN EMPIRICAL STUDY OF THE RELEVANCE OF ACCOUNTING INFORMATION ON INVESTOR?S DECISIONS
    (2010) Perera, R.A.A.S.; Thrikawala, S.S.
Recent empirical work has suggested that Accounting Information (AI) have lost their relevance to investors significantly over the past few decades. AI contained in financial statements to be accurate and transparent enough to provide an indication of a business performance and financial condition to decision makers including investors. According to the present empirical evidence, investors tend to focus on information other than the published accounting information such as non financial information, short term capital gains and tend to be speculative or irrational for unusual events. Therefore, this study attempts to addresses the relevance of AI on investor?s stock market decisions in Commercial Banks registered under Colombo Stock Exchange (CSE) in Sri Lanka. The relevance of accounting data was measured by correlation coefficient between Market Price per Share (MPS) and selected accounting information such as Earning per Share (EPS), Return on Equity (ROE) and Earning Yield (EY). The data analysis was based on the AI in the published financial statements of Commercial banks registered under CSE. It covers a period of 5 years from 2006 to 2009. According to the findings there is a relationship between Accounting Information and Market Price per Share. Further it revealed that investors still consider Accounting Information which contain in the published financial statements of Commercial Banks registered under CSE for the stock market decisions in Sri Lanka.

The analysis of motives pressure on SME networking in Sri Lanka
(Research Symposium 2009 - Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Kelaniya, 2009) Thrikawala, S.S.
The Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are considered as an essential component of economic growth and they are spanned as the largest number of enterprises throughout the country. Although they are playing an important role in the economic development they are confronted with many problems such as inadequate access to obtain capital and finance, inadequate industrial infrastructure, lack of market base information, obsolete technology, lack of modern management skills and lack of labour training. In this context, researches have identified number of traditional and non traditional factors which obstruct the growth of SMEs. As such, networking among SMEs is a considerable reason compared to other reasons that determine the sustainability of SMEs. Besides, the SMEs in many countries have not thrived to gain the advantages of economies of scale due to the fact that these business units operate in isolation. Therefore, they need support and resources from the other firms, institutes, relatives and friends to overcome their own barriers. In this setting, most of the researchers have accepted that trust, commitment, selection, intermediary, information technology and external environment are essential motives that make pressure on the SME networking. Thus, the objective of this study is to examine the causes which are highly influence on networking among SMEs in Sri Lanka. This study was carried out based on 100 manufacturing SMEs in Gampaha District selected by employing the purposive non probability sampling technique. The findings revealed that the trust and commitment were more considerable than the selection, intermediary, information technology and external environment for the formation of networking among SME in Sri Lanka. Thus, it is recommended that government should intertwine to build up the trust and commitment to form networks among SME owner/managers.

(University of Kelaniya, 2006) Thrikawala, S.S.
In a developing country economic growth can be sustained by the expansion of private sector, as they are the engines of growth. Majority of Private sector in developing countries consists of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), which consist of entrepreneurial skills and capable of quickly adapting to the market changes. Also lend a hand to reduce the unemployment and make a significant contribution to the GDP. As a consequence it is important to accelerate the growth of SME in order to gain sustainable development in this era. In Sri Lanka most of SMEs have not succeeded to gain the advantages of economies of scale because business units operate in isolation with the inadequate total assets and management skills. Due to this reason number of SMEs were shut down and others are also discouraged to launch new businesses. Thus, it is compelled to promote the horizontal business linkages and may potentially affect the SME development in order to carry out an effective participation of the SME for the development of country. The objective of this paper is to find the nature of the existing SMEs’ horizontal business linkages in Sri Lanka and make suggestions to improve them. The information was gathered through the questionnaires distributed among 50 SMEs. Through the data analysis it was discovered that the SMEs in Sri Lanka have poor horizontal business linkages and it is suggested to improve them to gain the competitive advantages.
