    Contribution of Community Based Water Supply and Sanitation Projecton 1-1 uman Development (A Case Study in Udugoda Water Supply and Sanitation Project)

According to the Millennium Development Goals of the United Nations, the main target is to minimize the population who could not have access good quality drinking water by year 2015 with the help of national level strategies of sustainable development. Conventionally, water supply project have been large scale capital intensive and mostly state sponsored "The community based water supply and sanitation project" is one such project implemented to provide optimum water supply and sanitary facilities of rural community of Sri Lanka. The structure of this project consists of a community activity. education programme, and sanitary programme. ;\ community based water supply and sanitation project is being operated at 351/ A. Udugoda Grama Niladhari Di\ision as one of the eighteen projects implemented by Attanagalle Divisional Secretariat Division. Udugoda village community has been experiencing a problem of shortage of water since the village is facing a scarcity of water even during a short dry season. They have been experiencing different health and sanitary needs when they were trying to satisfy these needs in informal ways. The objectives of this study was to identify the health and sanitary problems of rural people, to identify the quantitative and qualitative problems relating to supply of water , to study the project's contribution by giving sustainable water supply and sanitary facilities towards upgrading the healthiness of rural people. The methodology was purposive sampling and data were collected through questionnaires. interviews and observations. Building a community hall and conducting programme of good health and sanitary practices have been done under the community activity and the hygiene programmes respectively. Under sanitary progrmamc, toilets facilities arc supplied for the families who did not have toilet facilities and community based water supply programme supplied a sustainable tap water by using people's resources and creativity and transfer the ownership and maintenance of the water supply project to the people themselves. The project provided them with safe drinking water, which helps to reduce water borne diseases. This was the substantial contribution towards the human development.

    The effects of malnutrition of child population on human resource development: a case study in pre-child development institutions in Gampaha educational division

    Food and nutrition play a significant role ir;t development of human resources. The future of a country highly depends on a well - nourished child population. For the creation of a highly productive population with physical and mental equilibrium, a balanced diet is needed. Obesity, secondary malnutrition due to lack of food intake and under nutrition are aspects of malnutrition. 30% of the child population was suffering from malnutrition during the period from 2000- 2004. Most children who are under five years of age do not receive enough nutrition and suffer from lack of iron, iodine and vitamin A. The nutrition insufficiency is closely related with the consumption pattern and the composition of the meal. The objective of this study was to identify effects of problems of child nutrition on human resource development. This study was a case study. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews and observations. The composition of the sample was 50 children between the ages one to five and from both sex. Special attention was given to patterns of breakfast and lunch of the child population and main components of the diet. Body Mass Index (BMI) was used to study the nutrition level of the children. Five directors of pre child development institutions and twenty mothers who come to those institutions with their children and the chief midwife of Gampaha District were interviewed. Due of the insufficient supply of nourished food; children are suffering from low level of cognitive skills, low level of activeness, low level of learning skills, drop in the resistances level to illness, absence of needed weight and height and low level of physical development.

    Socio economic impact of retirement benefits on active ageing of pensioners’ community: special reference with public sector pensioners in Gampaha district

    Sri Lanka is experiencing a significant increase of ageing population. Old age economic insecurity is one of the main social and economic challenges in Sri Lanka. Elderly persons have been facing difficulties of paying their expenses in their old age such as medical expenses, utility bills, foods, housing, transportation costs and etc. The pension fund is a one of the social security systems which save the future of elderly after retirement from the public sector workforce. As a result of the increasing cost of living, pension entitlements are much less generous today and majority of elders face a serious risk of pensioner poverty. The main objective of this study is to identify the contribution of the pension fund to uplift the quality of life of the pensioners’ community. The methodology of this study; conduct a survey of 50 pensioners and 10 case studies with pensioners in Mahara Divisional Secretariat in Gampaha District. The findings revealed that the pensioners spend their retirement benefit for their own requirements and also that their family member’s requirements. The pension fund is not sufficient to overcome their economic hardship later in life. The socio economic wellbeing is at a low level in pensioners except for the executive level and high rank positions. Pensioners continuing saving in financial institutions engage in extra livelihood activities to fulfill their needs.
