Item Conceptual Policy Framework for Urban Parks in Sri Lanka with special reference to the Diyatha Uyana Urban Park, Colombo(University of Kelaniya, 2015) Oshani, P.A.L.; Wijethissa, K.G.C.P.The study was undertaken by the researchers by focusing on the problem of the kind of policy framework suited to the establishment of urban park. While previous research exists on urban park participation, no studies have been undertaken on the policies pertaining to the setting up of such parks. The main objective of this study was to contribute to the creation of a conceptual policy framework for the Diyatha Uyana urban park The amount of visitor participation was identified as the independent variable while nine dependent variables were identified: the effects of environmental Noises, the effects of population, disturbance by others when engaging in physical exercises, the barriers to take photographs, the inadequacy of resources for exercise, the prohibitive rules and regulations, limitations of space in the park, inadequacy of signage and safety measures. Two moderate variables were identified as physical and emotional factors. Through a simple random sampling method 300 visitors were selected to participate in this study through a questionnaire survey and interviews. A five point Lickert scale was used for data collection, while data was analysed one way Anova. One of the main findings of the quantitative study is that the main problem faced by visitors to Diyatha Uyana is environmental noise. As the one way Anova significant value was 0.012, the researchers conducted a SWOT Analysis to identify the possibility of creating a policy framework. In conclusion, the researchers proposed a greewall policy to reduce noise, with the recommendation that the greenwall be increased in park areas. The researchers also recommended that the government should consider implementing a greenwall policy in order to develop Diyatha Uyana, as well as when creating new urban parks.Item Factors affecting to recreation behavior in upcountry Tamil community in tea estates(International Research Conference on Humanities and Social Sciences (IRCHS 2012), Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, University of Sri Jayawardhanapura, 2012) Wijethissa, K.G.C.P.; Jayantha, K.; Ubhayachandra, E.G.This study aims to make a deeper analysis of Upcountry Tamil Community (UTC) in tea estates in relation to the factors effecting recreation behavior. the objective is to identify the influence of age and gender (demographic factors) for recreation behavior of UTC in tea estates. The researcher used primary and secondary data for this study. 200 labors were selected for the sample and the researcher used cluster sampling method as the sampling technique in this study. The researcher used questionnaire and interview methods to collect data and hypotheses were tested by calculate correlation and skewness. Based on the finding, the researcher concluded that employees? recreation behavior (individually and together) is negatively correlated with their age and gender. In addition, the researcher made recommendation to tea estates authorities and others in related field. The government should provide open spaces and recreational centers throughout the tea estates. By observing and studying the community it was predicted that they have different recreation patterns characterized by their own. Cluster sample method was used to select the sample and workers were selected for the sample from three clusters. Data collected via structured interviews as most were illiterate of the community. This study was limited to tea pluckers (Gathering people) and labourers of the surveying area. The result proved that the people were tightly bound to a daily routine, living a monotonous life with few expectations and having recreation patterns shaped by the geographical and their occupational patterns. The survey data led to the conclusions that the ETC was confined their estate environment and do not wish to have any contact with outside their community. As such, recreation programs and activities suitable for their locality have to be introduced.Item Visitors’ effective problems in urban park in Sri Lanka: special reference with in Diyatha Uyana urban park Colombo(The Research Center for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Oshani, P.A.L.; Wijethissa, K.G.C.P.
