Information Philosophy is a modern discipline of thecritical investigation of the conceptual nature and basic principles of information, including its dynamics, utilization and sciences andthe elaboration and application of information-theoretic and computational methodologies to philosophical problems ( Floridi,2003) merging of both Philosophy and Information Sciences. Information philosophy has been developed as a result of the amalgamation of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Sciences, Neurosciences, Cognitive Sciences, Mathematics, Physics and Philosophy. Cybernetics is one of the interesting contributions made by Norbert Wiener, Alan Turing, William Ross Ashby, Claude Shannon and Warren Weaver in the mid 20th century, when they had to explore the telecommunication and information channels for American Bell Company. Luciano Floridi in 1990 termed this as Philosophy of Information. Despite of the fact the e- learning, which is introduced for third world countries (in recent higher education modification policies) as an effective mode of education, it is highly found in the western philosophy that provides a plat form of non-local remote culture and behavior of human. However, this study tries to explore the contents and capacities of Asian information philosophy, so that application of e- learning could be possible with sustainable and productive implementation that avoids the differences and limitation on non-grounded philosophy for local clients. Assuming that if there is a proper understanding on the Asian information theory, that discusses the existing cognitive and neuro-linguistic apparatuses, it could be possible to manage the existing issues emerging in the phase of initiating E- learning in the open and distance education system for Sri Lanka. For this study it is used first a conceptual and analytical exposition on what is Asian Infroamtion Philosophy and How it is content on our traditions and philosophies, and second, to search for necessary avenues for implementing e-leaning on the proposed audiences, it uses on-going and well as received responses and existing applications of the case of Open and Distance Education program of the University of Kelaniya.Item Assesment of Digital Information Literacy among Faculty Members of Bharathidasan University(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Balasubramani, R.; Abu, K.S.This study will assess the digital information literacy skills and where they need training among the professionals of Bharathidasan University. But they are still interested in keeping a private collection of books. Many students interested to read books as a conventional source however due their meager acquaintance of modern e-resources, acute trust on conventional source like books prompted reading rather using modern e-resources. Therefore, they have to be trained and more awareness programs on the use of e-resources.Item Automatic Extractive Twitter Hashtag Summarization(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Hengodage, M.A.; Samankula, W.G.D.M.During past years, social media content has been widely used for many purposes, fields. Large amounts of content are generated in these social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn in every day. Twitter has large sets of data which is limited to 140 words, unlike any other social media platforms. Twitter allows a huge number of users to contribute frequent short messages. The content is an extraordinarily large number of small textual messages that are posted by millions of users. Twitter has topics system which enables the user to check about public opinion using with particular hashtags. Twitter websites’ content was focused in this research. This trending topic changes daily, even it changes based on locations. Each country has a different set of trends. But the major problem is for recognizing these hashtags for the users who are not very active on twitter websites. Some hashtags self-explain themselves with the words being used but not all of them. This project gives the ability to summarize idea about particular hashtag. A hashtag summarizer was implemented in order to address this problem. Creating hashtag summarizer may give the foundation to address previously mentioned issues about hashtags. This implemented system has some additional features other than hashtag summarization, for an instance user may use it to quickly check updates about some live event going on with its hashtag keyword. This solution provide some options to fine tune the results of summarization. In the summarisation process, all the related posts for given hashtag are considered. Then emoji’s and non-ascii characters are removed from the imported text data. The data is sent to the summarizer after cleaning up the characters. Then summarizer associates the words with their grammartical counterpart. Considering the frequency, each word is ranked with points system. Furthermore, by end of the sentences taking into the account, summariser splits the text into sentences. At the end of the process, sentences are ranked by sum of their words’ points. Then, it returns the highly ranked sentences.Item Awareness and Usage of Smartphone Applications for Information Sharing Tasks among the Research Scholars of Periyar University- An Analytical Study(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Gomath, P.; Rubinandhini, A.Smart phone has been spread among the world wide to day. For the first time in entire human history, the growth and capturing of information had grown exponentially over the last decade. According to Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google, the information that is being created in every two days is as much as the information that was produced since the dawn of civilization up until 2003. However, even when the world is at the technology revolution with the unimaginable amount of information, some organizations in the world are still very much disconnected with technology and uses legacy, traditional approaches for many projects. In large scale global events it is vital to use proper mechanisms to manage and update information as using the right information at the right time will make different tasks much cost effective and efficient. This study is based on one of the international events organized by a government organization in Sri Lanka and intend to discuss the effectiveness and efficiency of the processes had the proper mechanisms were used along with information management. It was also seen during the study that many challenges were posed when attempting to introduce technology for information management as many government employees used to work in legacy methods and reluctant to adapt technology even it eases the amount of work. Another important finding is that government employees were very rule abide and always think of working within the boundaries cross referring to the books and think if technology is being introduced the ways of tracking the work is not possible or is not legal. Therefore, before making every decision, it had become a habit of referring to the next level of authority till the highest level for approval even for a small task that is within the rule for employees to complete. Taking responsibility and accountability of work being done is greatly lacking in government systems. Hence using information and technology for special events such as the study analysed in this paper is greatly absent as employees don’t believe in electronic records even they are well valid in legal frame of audits. However, several sub bodies were seen making attempt to use technology for information management, but without the due support from its peers the effort is nothing but futile. Even when having top notch project scheduling resources like BaseCamp, it was hardly seen been used in this project. The information that was discussed and presented at meetings were widely ignored or people were only making notes of what is been assigned to them rather than looking into the project as combined effort, making it difficult to share information even through a tool such as BaseCamp. The objective of this paper is to discuss the challenges faced in organizing an international conference when there was lot of reluctant using technology and systems for information management.Item Characteristics of Documentation patterns of Sri Lankan Tamils(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Srikanthalakshmi, A.Sri Lankan Tamils have a rich tradition in art of writing which is prerequisite of any bibliographic activity.Documentation in its widest sense used to address the recording of data, events, information and even knowledge for variety of purposes. It involves work of both compilation and editing.Documentation work related to compilation is categorized into two major divisions as source type and tool type documentation while work related to editing involves with reproduction and creative documentation. This study specially focused only on documentation work related to compilation. In this study an attempt is made to identify some characteristics of the documentation works of Tamils living in and outside of Sri Lanka. Objective of this study is to identify the Documentation patterns of Sri Lankan Tamils. Different kinds of 150 works have been selected on random sampling method for this study. Using both descriptive and exploratory research methods, this study explains the identified characteristics of documentation patterns of Sri Lankan Tamilswith the analysis. Since all the outputs derived from documentation have the reference value and they are treated as secondary information resources which are produced from primary resources, the resources taken into this study has been categorized into two major divisions as Source type documentation (86nos) and Tool Type documentation(64). In the Tool type documentation works, majority of the works (59) are identified as providing merely bibliographical details, 46 works are descriptive in nature and 4 works provides annotation. In source type documentation 24 works comes under full text documentation. Each category has further been classified on the basis of type of documents and most of on them (40 Nos) are focused on books.Involvement of non-librarians in documentation activity is higher than library professionals. Majority works (48nos) were identified as providing information with national scope. Systematic arrangement was given priority in most of the compilations. Quantitative analysis shows near to half of the works were done during 2000-2016. This study could play as an evidence for the historical development of documentation culture of this nation in general and specific ethnic groups in specific.Item Chemical Sciences Research Output among the Universities in the State of Tamilnadu: A Scientometric Study(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Pandian, R.Chemistry is a major subject of domain of basic sciences, the principles; the theories and applications have been involved for the use of mankind for generations in almost in all kinds of physical activities. It is also evident that a major stake of research is being carried out in chemistry and allied subjects, as one fourth of the publications output are being indexed by most popular scholarly literature across the globe, it is very much imminent for library and information professionals to identify the scholarly input growth and trend of the subject prevalence, the research applications, the research funding and opportunities, the research tools, methods, the organisations and the people engaged in research of chemical sciences and to forecast the same to the user community. The UniversitiesinTamilnaduhave the major stake towards contributing and orienting the academic research in India. Hence the study aimed at analysing and assessing the research output on chemical sciences from the State Government Universities of Tamilnadu through the publication output. The researcher has choosen Web of Science (WoS) database as the source of study and the study period is 1989-2014, The researcher has used the search string in the topic field “Chemistry” and Address field “Alagappa University”, “Annamalai University”, “Bharathidasan University”, “Bharathiar University”, “Madras University”, Madurai Kamaraj University”, “ManonanmaniamSundarnar University”, Mother Teresa University”, Periyar University”, and “Thiruvalluvar University” is used for data collection. The study found gradual growth of publication output over the years. Phenomenal growth is between 2011-2014. All the 5433 publications were received Global Citation Scores 51862. The literature published in 9forms of documentations. It is observed that its relative growth rate have shrunk gradually from 4.28 at 1989 to 8.61 in the year of 2014. Contrary to this, the Doubling time for publication of all sources of 0.19 research output has decreased from 1.17 in 1989 to 5.78 in 2014. The Collaboration research between Tamilnadu State Universities had 51862 number of citations across the globe; the top three countries contributed are USA, Japan, and South Africa. There are 33 subject categories in chemical research is being carried out, which is published in 351 journals, the major output from top three journals are Indian Journal of Chemistry section B (236), Tetrahedron Letters (214), Asian Journal Chemistry (194). The researcher also applied the relevance of bibliometric laws and made a Histrographical analysis for citations. There are 5437 number of authors were contributed this literature. The study shows that there were rich numbers of collaboration among the Indian and aboard.Item Cloud Computing and its Applications in Library: A Review(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Raja, S.; Krishnan, V.Cloud computing have not been a new technology that suddenly appeared on the web but it is a new form of computing. Cloud computing is a kind of computing technology which facilitates in sharing the resources and services over the internet rather than having these services and resources on local servers/ nodes or personal devices. Cloud computing is a kind of computing technology which facilitates in sharing the resources and services over the internet rather than having these services and resources on local servers/ nodes or personal devices. The combination of servers, networks, connection, applications and resources is defined as 'cloud'. Application of cloud computing user would be able to browse a physical shelf of books, CDs or DVDs or choose to take out an item or scan a bar code into his mobile device. All historical and rare documents would be scanned into a comprehensive, easily searchable database and would be accessible to any researcher. Many libraries already have online catalogues and share bibliographic data with OCLC. More frequent online catalogues are linked to consortium that share resources. The combination of servers, networks, connection, applications and resources is defined as 'cloud'. This article describes models of Cloud computing, applications in library, advantages, disadvantages of cloud computing in library and its barriers.
