(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Samarakoon, M.
Information Literacy skills are acutely needed for undergraduates. Today the passing society belongs to the information era. Information literacy is the ability to access, evaluate, organize and use information, problem solving and to make decisions. All professionals are influenced as information technology and there are a number of challenges to the information seekers. This research aims to conduct an investigation of the skills of the undergraduates seeking information by themselves. Objectives of this study was to examine the awareness of information literacy skills, to Identify the perception of students’ ability of IL, to identify the obstacles in information seeking and to recommend the suggestions to improve information literacy among undergraduates. The research method used in this study is survey design. Questionnaires, interviews and observation were used as principle techniques for primary data collection. Questionnaires were distributed between 9 am -10 am per two weeks to those undergraduates who are come to the library representing first and second year students. The Questionnaires covered question on citation and reference styles, searching methods and strategies, plagiarism etc. Few faculty members were randomly selected and interviews were conducted. Personal observations were carried out on students’ information searching, catalogue usage, finding information resources etc. Data is presented and analyzed graphically in tabulated forms. The study reveals that the students lack of locating skills. The respondents do not have very clear idea on the types of E-resources. Students are aware of the meaning of the ‘plagiarism”. They believe that the internet is the most current and accurate information source. They do not have a fair idea about methods and tools to be used for retrieval of information from related information sources. Students’ ability of referencing is low. The study makes several recommendations that the program to IL skills has to be planned for all undergraduates. Short time program should be introduced parallel with first year orientation program. Bibliographical workshops, short time courses should be introduced by university library. IL program should include an assessment of student learning and Individual assessments should be developed in consultation with the faculty members and also to be Collaborated with faculty to create effective research assignment.

Female married employees are much interest to work in these organizations and more than 50% of library academic staff represents them. In general, their commitment is lesser than female unmarried employees due to various factors such as family commitment, work stress etc. Female unmarried employees represent only 14% with higher commitment. Multi-Criteria Evaluation System for University Library’s Performance in Sri Lanka.
(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Illangarathne, S.K.
The continuous improvement is the key to long-term sustainable development for service orientation institutions. The recent studies on performance evaluation of service providing institutions have established several constructs, and the concept of “Performance Indexing” (PI) has emerged. This study concentrated on the system development of Multi-Criteria Evaluation for university libraries performance in Sri Lanka using the Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP). Though, assessing the overall performance of library instead of organizational effectiveness theory is very new and significant. There is a lack of library effectiveness evaluation theories and practices have been developed. Nevertheless, none of them attempted to evaluate the library performance instead of academic library context. Therefore, the aim of this study was to develop a Multi-Criteria Evaluation (MCE) model for PI particular reference to the university libraries of Sri Lanka. The ultimate goal of this model was to enhance the level of service efficiency and customer satisfaction throughout the improvement of inter-competitiveness among those libraries. To achieve the objectives and ultimate goals of the study, a structured questionnaire was developed to identify the users’ perceptions about current library services while examining the library expertise opinion about the importance of chosen model variables. The research questions were based on quantitative & qualitative constructs which adapted from organizational effectiveness theory such as; library efficiency, core people process, environment, users’ satisfaction, adaptability, and capacity. The Fuzzy extended Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) was used to process the model. The model was tested with appropiate sample (Sample size = 269) of library users which consisted with faculty members and postgradents. The reliability of the questionnaire scale was suitable for further analysis and its (Cronbach’s Alpha = 0.842),and the exploratory factor analysis has confirmed the validity of data. The data was highly correlated with selected factors. 24 items were selected for the further model test. The experts’ opinion survey revealed that Library Efficiency and Library Users’ Satisfaction are more influenced variables to library effectiveness while Library Capacity, Library Adaptability, and Library Environment are less influenced. The result suggests that library leaders should conduct continuous assessments about their services and should customize perceived quality according to the users’ perceptions. The major innovation of the study was to develop a new conceptual model to identify the key influential factors of performance. Another key innovation of the study was to construct a performance evaluation index using the fuzzy AHP evaluation indexing methods. The third innovation of the study was to use the Internet basis resources sharing methods via social media at the Sri Lankan University Libraries to meet their new era challenges.

(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Angammana, A.M.S.; Ranasinghe, S.
University libraries as academic libraries play a major role in creating academic excellence as well as producing all round personalities. Though university libraries pay special attention in providing subject textbooks to its users, the collection should consists of other categories of resources too. In order to fulfill the needs of the users, librarians need to identify the users reading patterns and behavior. The present study aimed at investigating the use of library books by medical undergraduates. As specific objectives it was intended to find out whether medical students read extra books and whether pattern of reading differ according to study year. Methodology involved is a case study. The population was all undergraduates enrolled in the faculty of medical sciences, University of Sri Jayewardenepura from freshmen to final inthe year 2016. Total population was 1201 and total population was considered as the sample. Quantitative data was collected using the book loan statistics of circulation module of Library management system “KOHA” during the year 2016. Daily statistics of books checked out during January 2016 to December 2016 were analyzed. Subjects were coded using Dewey Decimal classification system.According to demographic data, sample consisted of 21% of males and 79% of females. Number of students who have borrowed books during the year were 610, that is 51% of the sample. Among them 12% were first years while 20%, 26%, 21%, 21% were second, third, fourth and final years respectively. 98% of the first year students have borrowed only textbooks. But this amount has decreased to 76% among final years. Percentages of textbooks borrowed by second, third and fourth years were 92%, 80%, 86% respectively. When considering other categories 17% of final years have borrowed fictions (English, Sinhala and translations) while only 1% of first years have borrowed fictions. This number varied through the study year as 7%, 18%, 10% in second, third and fourth years respectively. Findings revealed that majority of medical students read only textbooks and usage varies among the year of study. The lowest usage was observed from first year students, while third year students had the highest usage. Again in final year there is a decrease in usage. They tend to read other categories of books from third year onwards and most famous category was fictions. Also they have borrowed IT related and General knowledge books.Since this study shows a medium usage of library books, measures should be taken to increase the utilization of books especially by first years and final years. Also authorities should pay attention in fulfilling extra reading needs of medical undergraduates when developing the collection in order to assure effective library usage.
