Item The Communicative Meanings of the Traditional Mask (A Study Based on Kolam and Daha Ata Sanniya)(2011) Gunawardhana, T.S.S.Y.When analyzing the communicative meaning of the traditional mask and its evolution, prehistoric era becomes significant. It was used to convey the meanings such as war, hunting, gods, death, devils, spirits, diseases, rain, and drought. Mask has been used in various occasions for various communicative purposes in the world’s history. The mask reveals many communicative meanings related to creativity, language, intercultural meanings, religion and folk lore. When studying the folk art and exorcism ceremonies, it is seen that the mask was used for humour, sarcasm and healing diseases. Masks used for Kolam tradition conveys many ideas. It originated in the 1st half of the 19th century to communicate humour and satire. It also performs a social service by creating awareness. Masks used for Daha Ata Sanniya are as special as the masks used in Kolam tradition. The aim of Daha Ata Sanniya was to balance air, bile and fat in the body, and also give blessings. Masks are designed to emphasize the diseases associated with devils. The colours used also communicate meanings. One could gain information by studying the art of masks which is significant among folk arts. In addition, it conveys meanigful messages, which can be applicable in today’s society.Item Teledrama Dubbing and Challenges in Sri Lanka (Based on the dubbed dramas in Sri Lanka Rupavahini Cooperation)(2010) Hapuhinna, K.D.W.M.C.K.Mass media is of huge positive impact for the development of a developing country. Moreover, media contributes a lot to globalization. Television has a significant place among other media as it is an audio-visual media. Some critique state it as the third parent. Every media translates and presents foreign literary texts, teledramas, films and other creations. Therefore, it bridges up the gap between people and culture. A uniqueness can be seen in the connection in printed, audio and audio-visual media. Translating a foreign text into mother tongue, and accordingly uplift the appreciation of the viewers is a challenge in dubbing. It is a very complex deal with different ages, professions, and social status, to attract the audience. The aim of this study is to analyze the challenges of teledrama dubbing. From the past, there was the process of translating and presenting it to an audience in a way it suits them. Dubbing is successfully done worldwide and this dissertation analyses teledrama dubbing. Dubbing helps audience to enjoy foreign literary texts in their mother tongue. Moreover, one special thing is that, dubbing helps to introduce writers of world’s literature to visual media. Introducing R. K. Narayan via Malgudidawasa dubbed teledrama can be cited as an example. Further, this dissertation analyses how the audience is led to entertainment meaningfully with a low cost, which is a challenging task. It costs a lot to purchase audio visual productions in a country like Sri Lanka, but one could dub a universally appreciated text and present it to audience with a high quality of entertainment with a low cost. There should be a series of artistic features in dubbing foreign dramas. Then artists with talents come forward. They are introduced in a new way of talents and skills. They also can be given professional opportunities, which helps to produce dubbing artists. Even that can act as a solution for unemployment issue in a developing country like Sri Lanka.Item The image of women in Sri Lankan Cinema (based on selected films)(2011) Pushparani, W.H.C.This study focuses on the image of women in ‘Thani Thatuwen Piyambanna’ by Handagama (2003), Anjalika by Channa Perera (2005) and One Shot (2005) by Ranjan Ramanayake. The research question was whether the image of women affects the interest of the audience. The hypothesis is that the image of women affects the interest of the audience. The research made use of the Library, interviews, content analysis, questionnaires and thus proved the hypothesis. It was revealed that gaining the interest of the audience is important and producers use different techniques to achieve that. Among them, creating image of women is the most important thing. It was revealed that creative type of films are different from the popular variety, and the audience also respond differently. However, the research revealed that, by motivational techniques, interest of the audience can be gained for any film. In presenting these, the study was divided into six chapters . the first chapter introduces the study, the second talks of the image of women, third- cinema, the fourth is a study of selected films, fifth data analysis and sixth -conclusion. The conclusion was that woman image has a great impact on increasing the interest of audience. However, it is not the only factor.Item A socio communicational analysis on the role of mass media in early disaster warning(2010) Dharmasena, M.K.G.I.This study discusses the role of mass media in early disaster warning. The main objective was to identify the role of the electronic media in the process of early disaster warning implemented at national level. The hypothesis is that the electronic media can play a special role in early disaster warning in Sri Lanka. Data was collected from three groups such as the Disaster Management Centre, the electronic media and the public. A sample of officers in the Disaster Management Centre, journalists and randomly selected victims of the Tsunami in the southern province were selected for the study. The two techniques used in collecting data assisted in providing a deeper understanding on the early disaster warnings. In-depth interviews were carried out to study the early disaster warning system, and the role of the electronic media at national level. Officers of the Disaster Management Centre were consulted for the purpose. Self-administrated questionnaires were completed using a sample of news reporters and news editors in government and private electronic media channels to analyze the contribution given in early disaster warning. The other aim is to measure the awareness with this regard. Same procedure was followed with the randomly selected Tsunami victims in the southern area. There were two major conclusions. The electronic media can play a leading role in early disaster warning in Sri Lanka, and that includes providing quick and accurate information, without causing an unnecessary ruffle among the public. The journalists, as well as public have awareness about early disaster warning. The public believes that the electronic media will telecast information regarding early disaster warning. And media has gained a huge appreciation with this regard. In comparison to Tsunami in 2004, at present, early disaster warning is at a developed level.Item Political advertising and songs (A study based on the songs with protesting quality; “Vidodhaakalpa geetha’)(2008) Dasanayaka, P.D.S.Song is an aesthetic media. The main aim of this research is to prove how the song has been used to cultivate protesting attitude in public, and socialize it in Sri Lanka. This identifies the song in different perspectives. Moreover, this studies the evolution of Virodhaakalpa literature, communicative concepts, how songs spread in world’s literature as well as in prison and how it became popular in Sri Lanka via musical shows. Specially the focus was laid on the politics related musical shows. The aim was to show that the aesthetic mode called song can be used to popularize political purposes. Popularizing those political purposes via songs has got its positive and negative effects. The song, protest and politics became intertwined fields. The other fact this study proves is that any form of art cannot exist without politics. Earlier the subjects in songs were love, curiosity, and sex. Though the content is about protest, it could give other messages.
