As part of World Bank project, several groups of Sri Lankan academics passed through the university where this project took place during the late 1990s. This paper focuses on the second group where the author of this paper took control over their initial research methods class and became the acting director of the programme. Using the reflective journaling processes involved in autoethnography (Ellis 1999), and the hermeneutic processes of interviews arising from van Manen’s (1990) ‘pedagogical thoughtfulness’ this paper details how this group of academics coped with what Green and Lee called (1999), the ‘intense engagement of study’ involved in the nexus of post-graduate research and study. Already possessing post-graduate degrees, the group undertook this programme with the high degree of focus that would appear to typify overseas students studying in first world countries (Zhao, Kuh and Carinin 2005). However, while initially appearing to have the collective traits of being novices in a realm of gurus (Brown and Atkins 1998), this cohort revealed that not possessing English as a first language or critical thinking were not the basic impediments that are often discussed in academic journals (Cadman 2000, Silverin 2001). This paper details the characteristics that allowed this cohort to negate these first world perceptions entirely and overcome what (Biggs 2001) calls ‘cultural colonialism’.Item Abuse of Library Materials by the Undergraduate Students with Special Reference to Main Library, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Dayananda, A.P.M.M.D.B.; Jayawardana, K.G.I.; Malkanthi, D.G.A.S.The study sought to identify abuse of library materials in the Library, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka. User malpractices of Library materials by highlighting, underlining, removing papers/ parts of the page, damaging barcode labels, call number labels and damaging or defacing library materials is a threat to the library collection. Such practices can be described as abusing of the library materials. This survey was conducted with following objectives; to identify the various forms of abuse, to examine the reasons for the abuse and to suggest the possible solutions to protect the library collection. The survey was conducted by using questionnaires with close and open ended questions. Students (240) were selected for the study and out of it 204 were responded and the rate was 85%. The responders mentioned that text books were mostly abused material in the library and respondents gave their answers to the ways of abusing library materials mainly tearing away pages, folding pages, writing on pages of the materials. According to the reasons for the abuse of the information materials, 62% of students mentioned that high demand of a particular book, 58% limited copies of the information materials, 48% poor photocopying machine and 30% indicated selfishness. The respondents proposed a variety of strategies to protect the collection too. The study recommended that abusers should be subjected to heavy and well defines penalties and mount cameras (CCTV) in the library. The number of copies of demanded text books should be increased. Improving photocopying services of the library. Introduce and electronic system as RFID machines. Regularly reviewed set of library instruction should be drawn.Item Abuse of women in Indian advertisement(University of Kelaniya, 2008) Pathak, P.; Pandya, M.Item Abuse Potentials of the University Students(University of Kelaniya, 2005) Weliange, W.S.; Kularatne, M.G.Lack of facilities for various extra-curricular activities for all the students in the university community is one of the major reasons for student unrest in Sri Lanka. According to the investigation carried out in 1988, 20% and 80% students involved in competitive and non-competitive extra-curricular activities respectively, before they enter the university. 75% and 23% students expect jobs in the government sector and private sector respectively, only 5% prefers self-employment. Sports and aesthetic activities are most important for the well-being of the body and the mind. Involvement in different kinds of extra-curricular activities and continuation of activities that they have been doing since their childhood would probably help students 1) learn more about various challenges; 2) meet different people from prospective job markets and interests; 3) for capacity building; 4) in imagining about future prospective jobs; 5) develop the self-confident in facing the private sector and involve in self-employment. Therefore, the university education system should be reformed in a productive way to produce better graduates who can face any challenging situation in the country. Therefore, university as a learning organization should improve various activities to develop active participation of students in developing their skills in addition to academic activities. Thus, ongoing research should be carried out encompassing extra- curricular activities of the students in order to enhance active participation in the university environment.Item Academic Interactions with Foreign Institutions in 2017(Reviewing International Encounters 2018,The Research Center for Social Sciences (RCSS), University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Manathunga, A.This presentation is a summary of my research papers presented in foreign universities in 2017. The findings underscore the crucial role of information literacy in a digital era for societal well-being.Item The Academic Library Support for E-Learning: Students’ Perspectives and Web Observation(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2021) Perera, W.P.G.L; Suraweera, S.A.D.H.N.In today's digital age, ICTs have become an influence for the education sector, which has created exceptional learning experiences through virtual platforms. E-learning is capable of widening access materials, equality, reducing cost, improving quality, flexibility and maintaining interactive learning in university education. University education is geared towards teaching, learning and students are adept at new knowledge and information. Academics and information professionals help them develop information to enhance their knowledge in specific areas. The academic library is the largest provider of educational information and resources. In the e-learning context, the university library has a huge role and should directly support the educational process as well as research by providing facilities. University libraries continue to offer services that build on traditional learning. It also needs to improve how we support virtual users. Digital natives tend to learn virtually, and library services need to expand to support them. This study was conducted in advance of the COVID-19 pandemic to determine the status of academic library support and e-learning initiatives from a student perspective. The quantitative methodology was applied with the data gathering through a questionnaire from undergraduates. However, e-learning has rapidly changed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It has also resulted in a sudden transformation of library services. To validate the study results, of the research, the web observation has been added and to determine the recent development of library support for e-learning. The results of the study show that students expect library services through multimedia mode and expect on-line guide sessions on the use of modern technological facilities, information retrieval facilities for distance learning. It appears that the user expects to have access to information in a highly flexible and timely manner.Item An academic study about the incestuous connections depicted in the Sinhalese folk-lore(University of Kelaniya, 2008) Jayasundara, B.; Priyadarshani, S.Item Acceptance and rejection in Buddhist monasticism: spatial organization in Nalanda monasteries in Bihar(University of Kelaniya, 2013) Dhammananda, GalkandeWhen we reconstruct the history of relationships and hierarchies among people and groups the study of spatial organization provides much information. The „space‟ is a production that narrates the nature of relationships, hierarchies, organizational structures, rejection and acceptance of certain people and groups who live or interact with that particular space. Perhaps the story narrated by the spatial studies differs considerably from the story narrated by the literature. Such relationships, hierarchies and organizational structures that maintained in monasteries are reconstructed mainly considering on literary sources which have their own limitations and biases. Therefore, there is a vacuum for studies of the spatial organization of Buddhist monasteries. In this paper the spatial organization of Nalanda monasteries of Bihar (4th century to 13th century) is analyzed. Objectives of this paper are to explore and reconstruct the above mentioned different relationships, hierarchies and organizational structures that have been maintained among inmates and between lay and clergy of Nalanda, a Buddhist monastery that represents a mature level of the development of the idea of „monastery‟. In exploring this archaeological and architectural remains of ritual and residential spaces will be analyzed in details horizontally and vertically. The way of the ritual and residential spaces are organized, their orientations, centrality and different levels of restrictive methods adopted through spatial organization will be analyzed here. Several levels of hierarchies among monks and between lay and clergy are seen. While attempting to keep lay people away from the spaces of the monks the effort is seen to welcome them with certain restrictions and limitations.Item Acceptance and Usage of Moodle Learning Management System among Academics in the University of Kelaniya(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Wickramasinghe, D.; Suraweera, S.A.D.H.N.The purpose of this research is to analyze acceptance and usage of Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) amongst academics in a selected public university. 71 academics were responded from four faculties i.e. Social Sciences, Humanities, Commerce & Management Studies, and Computing and Technology in the University of Kelaniya. The printed questionnaires as well as online questionnaires were distributed among the lectures. The findings reveal that a gap between high acceptance and low actual usage. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) was the framework used for this study. Finding of this research revealed the hypotheses such as academics’ attitude towards using LMS is influenced by the perceived usefulness. Academics’ behavioral intention to use LMS is influenced by their attitude towards using LMS. Academics’ acceptance of learning management system is high in University of Kelaniya. The data revealed that the academics use the LMS more for ‘assignment’. Some activities such as Mootyper, SCORM package, Workshop, Wiki, Survey, Choice and Glossary should be more utilized. The URL was the most used Moodle resource and the least resource was IMS content package. So IMS content package, label should be more utilized and need to conduct proper trainings to get a successful engagement in Moodle LMS.Item Access and Usage of the Online Databases in the Wayamba University Library Network (with special reference to Makandura Premises)(Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Thusithkumari, W.M.Electronic databases play a major role as information sources in libraries at present. Many of the indexed and abstracting journals appear as electronic bibliographic databases and information retrieval systems. Other than indexes and abstracts, there are different types of electronic databases, which are now very popular among the librarians and library users due to several factors like speed, flexibility, wide range and accuracy. The objective of this study is to measure the online database usage of academics in Wayamba University Makandura Premises, and to find the obstacles they face. The methodology used for this study was the survey method. Online questionnaires were used as the data collection method. The questionnaires were distributed to the academic staff in two faculties of the Makandura premises. Usage statistics of vendors were also used in data analysis. Online questionnaires were given to the academic staff in order to identify the most useable databases, and also to understand the obstacles in using online databases. Vendor’s statistics (2012-2015) are utilized to see the usage pattern of databases. The study shows that there had been a steady growth rate in the usage of the online database.. However the general usage of online database of Wayamba library network is at a satisfactory level. Several obstacles to online database usage were identified in this study. These include the lack of full text availability, the high cost of online databases, the lack of search skills among users, the lack of knowledge about scholarly e-journals. The following recommendations were made to overcome above obstacles: increase the subscriptions of scholarly online databases, allocate sufficient funds by the university and conduct continuous information-seeking literacy training by library.Item Accessing the User Satisfaction of Information Literacy Skill Development Program: Special Reference to Faculty of Business Studies and Finance, Wayamba University of Sri Lanka(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Gamlath, W.G.P.; Thusithakumari, W.M.; Malkanthi, D.G.A.S.; Jayawardana, K.G.I.The innovations in information communication technology have influenced libraries to serve better and adopt the changes. The introduction and spread of electronic information sources are major developments in the libraries and information services in past decades. Today’s information seekers has been offered different opportunities to access to information resources in an increasing array and format. Therefore, role of the academic libraries changed in preparing students to handle the rapidly expanding range of information formats. Traditional Orientation programme is primarily concerned with ways of introducing general techniques of library use and services available, organization layout and facilities of the particular library. Academic libraries are given a fresh opportunity to attract first year students to the library and its services. Therefore, Information Literacy Skill Development (ILSD) Programme changed the traditional scenario and adopted according to new strategies. This paper mainly focused on user satisfaction of ILSD Programme special reference to Faculty of Business Studies and Finance (FBSF), Wayamba University of Sri Lanka (WUSL) also to share experience with other academic librarians. Survey method applied for the study and focus group was the new comers who actively attend fulltime to the ILSD Programme. Selected sample was 287 new comers of FBSF. A self-structured questionnaire with 9 main factors was distributed among the sample. According to the results, the satisfactory level of factors; clear explaining of library service/ facilities, effective multimedia usage, hands on training on e-resources, Brainstorming and Mind Mapping Techniques , OPAC, Library Classification System, Library Tour, integration of library staff and Time allocation is in the range from 87% to 98%. The study investigates that application of innovative practices to the ILSD Programme is more productive in challenging for this changing environment of global information era. Hence, the study recommended to libraries should go extra mile passing traditional Library Orientation ideas with strategies in more practical IL skills for sustainable development.Item Achieving Holistic Peace beyond a Military Victory: case of Sri Lanka.(1st International Studies Students’ Research Symposium-2017 (ISSRS 2017) ,Department of International Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka., 2017) Gallage, H.The small island state of Sri Lanka is in a period of revival after the end of a civil war which was fought for several decades. The roots of this conflict traces back to certain administrative decisions of colonizers as well as of successive governments which expanded the conflict into a fully-fledged civil war between the Sinhala majority and the Tamil minority represented by the terrorist organization, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. After three decades of persistent fighting the war came to closure in 2009 but the question of peacemaking left to answer was perhaps even more challenging. Eight years after the end of war, elements of violence still prevail which not only make it almost impossible to call the peace gained sustainable and holistic, but also probable for a conflict to resurge. Therefore the objective of this research is to analyze the post-war context of Sri Lanka and thereby determine a holistic model of peace which is sustainable beyond the military victory gained back in 2009. The research takes up a qualitative approach and to that end it gathers secondary data that assess the post-war situation of the country. The analysis is largely based on the theoretical analysis of Johan Galtung’s theory of negative and positive peace in relation to post-war Sri Lanka. A careful assessment of the post-war data of Sri Lanka for the period of 2009-2016 suggests that the peace gained following the military victory is negative while lacking peace in its positive, holistic sense. The research findings manifest that although Sri Lanka has been unified territorially its numerous ethnicities are yet to be reconciled into one tightly knitted inclusive society to create the Sri Lankan nation that transcends narrow ethnic disparities. It also concludes that it may require years of commitment and significant upheaval of the attitudes of the public. But if that can be achieved, its results can be relished by many generations to come who shall not be burdened again with the agonies of war.
