Item Responsibility of media for the change of traditional food and eating habits(Department of English, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Dhammarathana Thero, B.; Mendis, N.; de Saram, H.The research focuses on Sri Lankan food and eating habits. Today the food have been changed due to various reasons and media is one effective factor for this change. Today television and magazines are filled with plenty of advertisements and most of them are concerned with food. They point out the positive side of that product and how that product is helpful to the consumer. They highlight the simple, quick and easiness of that product to use. Today media, that is mainly television and magazines or newspapers have given major place to advertisements and among them the advertisements on instant food compel the people to buy it. It is proposed to undertake the following approach as methodology in order to meet the research objectives. This research will consist of two primary stages. First stage consists of content analysis of primary and secondary sources and the second stage is a qualitative research by means of interviews. Information were gathered from the students, lecturers and few families in countryside and city. It has been identified as one of the major long standing issues confronted by undergraduates who chose to specialize in Social Science subjects. This process of language medium shift in education is known as Content and Language Analysis (CLIL) which is a dual focused teaching approach aimed at acquiring subject knowledge as well as foreign language competence simultaneously. Several studies have been carried out in this fieldsuch as by Cenoz, Genesee and Gorter (2013),Georgiou (2012) and Evans and Morrisons (2011). Howeverdespite of such research, a gap had always existed in terms of research focusing on university education. A questionnaire and interview based survey was carried out to gather necessary information and perspectives from undergraduates specializing in International Studies, Economics and Sociology in which this shift was prevalent. Such as "ba, tara, to and nara". The students who are learning Japanese language are facing some difficulties when they are using these conditional structures. Some languages have various types of conditional structures and some languages do not have these types of many conditionals. This paper is to analyze the main characteristics of "ba, tara and to", the commonly using conditional structures in Japanese. Relevant data for the research has been collected from the native speakers. The purpose of this paper is to find out difference between " ba, tara and to" The findings will be useful for the students who are learning Japanese as a foreign language.Item The contribution of Kumaratunga Munidasa as an individual language planner(Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Randula, K.K.G.Language planning refers to deliberate and systematic attempts taken to solve the language problems of a speech community. Usually such measures in standardising a language’s structure and determining its political status are taken by a country’s political authority. Cumaratunga Munidasa (25th July 1887 - 02nd March 1944) was one of the greatest classical Sinhalese scholars of the 20th century, whose service to the Sinhalese language has been subjected to extensive studies in various disciplines. It has been observed that certain acts of Cumaratunga Munidasa reflect the features of a corpus planner, while his impact on promoting the Sinhalese language to the official language status has been of extreme significance. Since Cumaratunga’s contribution has not been substantially evaluated in the perspective of language planning, this study attempts to recognise Cumaratunga as an individual language planner. Data for the study were collected from writings of Cumaratunga ranging from paper articles to voluminous books. The language planning model proposed by E. Haugen (1983) was adapted in the evaluation process. In this study it has been observed that it is proper to recognise Cumaratunga Munidasa’s role in revitalising the Sinhalese language as the contribution of an individual language planner.Item The importance of letters in “Pride and Prejudice” and “Emma”(Department of English, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Jayamaha, A.; Botheju, K.; Jayatilaka, R.; Prasangi, D.; Welgama, E.; Gunawardana, Y.Epistolary writing is a feature which only a few novelists have adopted. The research is aimed at examining epistolary writing with regards to Jane Austen’s novels Pride and Prejudice and Emma. Both the novels Pride and Prejudice and Emma contain several letters that fulfill the task of developing the plot through its aim of creating incidents. The novel Emma mainly contains only one letter in specific, which is Frank Churchill’s letter that we find in Chapter 50 and all the others are incidents where someone else speaks up about what is conveyed through a letter. Letters of confession, letters of love marriages, letters of unspoken emotions and letters of informing certain trivial matters as arrivals and illnesses, day to day casual letters are mentioned in both novels. Through the information revealed by the letters, the plot too develops in a certain way, manifesting certain characteristics of the characters and adding up to the themes. Letters Austen mentions in both novels can be categorized according to the message the letter conveys and how a letter adds to the development of the plot can be analyzed with a close examination of the letters and the incidents where letters are brought out.Item Morphological processes in the language of Facebook(Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Mallawaarachchi, I.A.Social networks including Facebook®, Twitter® and Instagram® have gained popularity throughout the world and thus have emerged with distinct cultures of their own. The fact that interactions on them are done ‘virtually’ without one to one communication emphasises the significance of written medium of communication in social media. This stance is evident in the culture of Facebook where a considerable number of Sri Lankans are engaged in social networking. Online chatting, posting various updates, captioning photos and videos are done through texts, thus ‘language’ plays a key role in the communication that takes place. Therefore, a remarkable linguistic culture has emerged, with numerous ‘new words’ entering the language every day. Accordingly this study concentrates on the usage of English particularly by Sri Lankans who interact through Facebook. However, in the instances where borrowings are concerned, the influences from and upon Sinhalese are also discussed. Various social and cultural implications were taken into consideration in order to analyse the semantic changes and culture – bound expressions. The proposed study is a participant observation in which the researcher conducted the analysis while actively participating in the activities that happen on Facebook. A number of Facebook profiles of both Sri Lankan and foreign users, Facebook chats, Facebook pages that are administered by local and foreign users and the design of the website in general are thus considered the primary source whereas the literature on morphological processes and the language on the internet serves as the secondary source. The analysis of these new words exposes various morphological processes, which are compounding, initialism, acronym, semantic expansion, affixation, blending, semantic shift, functional shift and borrowing. Remarkably, existing words are employed to create new words and new meanings rather than coining entirely new words. The specialty & variety of social behavior linked to the miscellaneous societies are evident in such literature. Novels written about the life in the jungle are rare when compared with other types of novels. R. L. Spiitel’s works become prominent in this respect. The endless kindness the author had towards Vedda community, a sub culture of old Sri Lanka, is very evident in the four novels “Where the White Sambour Roams” (1962) , “The Wild White Boy” (1962) , “Savage Sanctuary” (1956) , “Vanished Trails” (1963). Although it was written on the gradual evolution of the same culture, these four novels represent two eras. It focuses on the vedda community during the rule of king Rajasinghe the 2nd in 17th century by “Where the White Sambour Roams” & “The Wild White Boy”, while “Savage Sanctuary” & “Vanished Trails” depict the life of the Vedda people mixed up with the society of the British Era of the 19th century. The intention of this research is to find out the way that the Vedda society changed as a result of The Constant exposure to the major society. The Sinhalese translations of the four books mentioned above and “Eda Heladiwa”, the Sinhalese translation of “An Historical Relation of the Island of Ceylon” by Robert Knox have been used as primary sources. Variations appear in the process of its development due to its mutability. Code mixing is an important concept in sociolinguistics and it is a highly discussed phenomenon in Sri Lankan speech. Moreover, code mixing is commonly used by bilingual speakers in different situations. Most of the Sinhala speakers mix Sinhala and English languages when communicating with others both intentionally and unintentionally. In fact, code mixing is the use of one language in another language, the mixing of two or more languages or language varieties in a speech. Many research studies on code mixing have been conducted in various fields such as fiction writing, broadcasting media, print media and advertising. However, no research has been conducted on code mixing in the field of tuition although it is prominently used in this field. Data for the study were collected through questionnaires and unstructured interviews which were conducted after analyzing them in order to gather in depth data. The sample included randomly selected group of teachers and students who are involved in the field of tuition particularly Biology and Economics in Kiribathgoda area. This study explores when and why code mixing is used in the field of tuition. Mahayana Buddhism greatly elaborates sunyata, because their forefathers could not understand the concept of Nibbana. Unfortunately, many people who are introduced to Mahayana teachings believe that Nibbana is an abstract concept. It is a very simple concept if one understands the pure Buddha Dhamma Emptiness is relative. There is no absolute “emptiness”. It is meaningless to say “this is emptiness” because there may be something there that we are not aware of. Still, one could say that “deep space is empty of tangible matter” to a good approximation. The Buddha said when the mind becomes empty of greed, hate and ignorance it becomes empty of those defilements and that mind has attained Nibbana. That is emptiness, sunyata with respect to defilements. When one attains the Arahantphala, one’s mind becomes sunya of raga, dosa, moha. But one still has sanna (perception), vedana (feelings), etc. and lives like a normal human being until death. At the death of an Arahant, “this world of 31 realms” becomes devoid of any trace of that life stream, except for the Arahant ‘snamagoththa’ there is no rebirth. So that is another sunyata. There is a sutta in Tipitaka that is about sunnata, and was delivered by the Buddha, called the Cula-Sunnatasutta. When I got to know about the sutta, I was glad to see that the sutta described emptiness very similar to the way I described it. This shows that the Dhamma is internally self-consistent. In the Cula-SunnataSuttaBuddha has preached. There is no need to write books on emptiness that are full of meaningless words. In a recent online discussion forum, I saw a comment saying that emptiness describes paticcasamuppada. This is surprising because in Mahayana texts it is not explained what paticcasamuppada is. The Buddha said “One who understands paticcasamuppada, understands Dhamma” The Mahayana sects have moved so far away from Buddha Dhamma, I cannot fathom why they still call it Buddha’s Dhamma.Item Language policy in Singapore(Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Kamali, R.D.; Hettihewa, A.S.; Senarathna, I.R.Language is not merely a tool for human communication where it also plays an important role in the development of social identity. Therefore it is important to have a wellplanned language policy in a country and it is becoming more and more essential in an increasingly multilingual society. As a multinational country Singapore has a diverse population and it includes Chinese, Malays, Indians, Eurasians, Caucasians and Asians of different origins. As a result of that Singapore has become a multilingual nation. However, the Singapore government recognises four official langauges: English, Malay, Chinese, Tamil. Their decison to adopt English, Mandarian, Malay and Tamil as their official languages came early in their nationhood. And also Bilingualism is a fundamental aspect of their education system while English is the medium of instruction in schools, students are required to learn their mother tongues aswell. This has ensured that they are able to engage fellow singaporeans of different races, access the global economy and at the same time remain connected to their cultural roots. This study attempts to describe how the language is being planned by the Singapore government and the present condition of their language policy. Data for the research are collected by using official documents of Singapore Government, newspaper articles and from recordings of informal conversations with a group of native speakers. These informal conversations are used to identify the bilingual habits of Singapore citizens. What we learned from the study is that in Singapore all four official languages were accorded parity of recognition, a clear message that all Singaporeans are equal partners in a single nation, regardless of race or language.Item කව්යාදර්ෂයෙහි සහ සියබස්ලකරෙහි රූපක ප්රභේද පිළිබඳ ව තුලනාත්මක අධ්යයනයක්(Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Dabare, P.D.C.Item The effect of explicit instruction on the use of indefinite and definite articles by ESL learners(Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, 2015) Kaushakee, L.H.N.The English article system presents many problems for non-native speakers of English, particularly when they do not have an equivalent structure in their first language. Researchers have employed different approaches to the teaching of articles in order to overcome this problem. This study investigates the effectiveness of using explicit instruction on the use of indefinite and definite articles by Sri Lankan ESL learners. The research questions addressed in the study were “Which of the articles is most difficult to the Sri Lankan ESL students? And the reasons for its difficulty”, “Does explicit instruction help to overcome the overuse and underuse of indefinite and the definite articles by Sri Lankan ESL students?” The study embraced a quantitative methodology and was conducted with a group forty secondary school ESL learners having different proficiency levels. Same cloze type pretest and a posttest were administered to collect data. A control group and an experimental group were assigned based on the marks of the pretest. The experimental group received four interventions, each of which represented a form-function and usage framework. The control group received no intervention. After the intervention, the posttest was administered to every participant during class time under the same conditions. By encouraging the students to address the specific rules of using indefinite and definite articles in English, the researcher was able to improve students’ understanding of this difficult area and guide them to a more accurate usage of the English article system. This study will contribute to the underdeveloped area of research related to pedagogy and its effectiveness in addressing the errors made by ESL learners in the use of articles. In addition, the study would enable academic researchers, language teachers, and linguists to build a further discussion on explicit instruction as an effort to minimize the errors made by ESL students.
