Item Best Practices in a College Libraries: A Case Study of Dev Samaj College for Women, Chandigarh (India)(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Kaur, J.College libraries need to have facilities that promote effective and interactive access and use of information resources for all of its users. For the development of library infrastructure, learning resources and for their sustainability, adoption of best practices, which are practiced elsewhere, will lead to continuous improvement in the libraries. The libraries need to prepare well-framed rules and guidelines with regard to hours of access, circulation policies, and other regulations to offer better services to the users. Some of the best practices in the libraries are with respect to management of libraries; staff promotional practices; orientation programmes for the users; reader development programmes; collection development in various format; access to host of electronic resources; computerization of library and its operations; library use statistics; electronic surveillance systems, etc. Dev Samaj College for Women, Chandigarh, located in northern part of India, is one of 180 colleges affiliated to Panjab University, Chandigarh (India) and offers to Post-Graduate and Graduate programmes in Arts, Sciences and Social Sciences. The college has strength of over 1200 students. The paper discusses the best practices followed in the College library to provide facilities and services to the student and teaching community of the College. The best practices followed in the college Library include DEAR Club’ Reader Motivation Programme, soothing music in the reading area, participatory collection development, etc.Item Collaboration Process between the Department of Library and Information Science and the Main Library: a Case Study based on University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Weerasooriya, W.W.R.W.M.C.S.K.Collaboration is the process which any organization in society can engage based on mutually agreed policies and practices with any other organization or group of organizations. Without a proper collaboration with other allied bodies and the profession of Library and Information Science (LIS), the Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS), University of Kelaniya is unlikely to keep up with these developments and deliver a good education and service in line with the international standards of teaching, research and information management. As a very good example, the establishment of DLISs in the main libraries in certain Indian university can be demonstrated. Professor Ranganathan was the creator of this concept. In that situation, building a good collaboration is very valuable for both the DLIS and with other related institutions specially the Main Library, University of Kelaniya. According to these situations the principle purpose of this paper is to study the collaboration process between the DLIS and the Main Library University of Kelaniya. The other objective are to explore what are the collaborative activities conducted by both institutes, to identify additional collaborative activities they can start, to examine what are the barriers for collaboration and to explore how such collaborative activities would impact for student academic and moral success. Method adopted is a case study followed by mixed research approach hence primary qualitative and quantitative data will be collected conducting interviews with both academic staff at the DLIS and the Main Library, of University of Kelaniya library. Focus group discussion method will also be used for further collecting data and information related to study. Secondary sources like DLIS and the Main Library records and reports will be given much impact for the study when secondary data collection. Results, findings and conclusions will be used for effective functioning of the collaboration between DLIS and Main Library.Item Community Outreach Library Services in Rajarata University Library System in Sri Lanka: A System Approach(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Harshani, K.R.; Siriwardena, A.S.The principal purpose of this paper is to explore the role of community service in academic librarianship conducted by the Rajarata University Library System. In this study it is expected to establish the concept of community service as a system approach for enhancing continuous lifetime library use by the communities from their early childhood up to mature age. The other objectives are to evaluate the development and the implementation activities in community service and to peruse the best practices leading to community success and growth.The principal notion of the community service is the exertion done by a person or group of people which benefits one or the others. Librarians can involvewiththe community for identifying their aspirations in advancewith view to offer a very quality service to the same community. Based on this view, Rajarata university library conducts numerous services for their community. In addition to the provision of pertinent information relating to the general functions of the library such as services, sections and resources, it is yet another opportunity to build relationship with students as they begin their school career. Library conducts numerous training programme for the public such as Primary level Student (Grade 1-5) O/L and A/L students, preschool teachers, pregnant mothers in North Central Province. Through these all programmes, it gives students and library officers of the particular library a chance to interact with librarians who are not always visible to the public. Library offers a range of service for children including various type of themes including storytelling, good reading habit, mind mapping concept, getting ready for exam, and the way of organizing home library.Therefore libraries can achieve great effects when they are with the community from their early childhood. Library staff can facilitate and support library efforts because they are linked into communities that libraries may not reach. Libraries have to attempt to show their strengths not only as a reading institution, but as a community services center. It is hoped that this study will be used as a model by other librarians who wish to develop service option in their own suburban communities.Item Higher Education Scenarios, New Media and Connecting With Modern Researchers: Issues and Challenges for Indian Academic Libraries(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Rao, K.S.; Aravind, S.At present users are empowered with an unbelievable amount of information, allowing them to thoroughly research their requirements before contacting a library. Today libraries are experimenting on with how to market library services and information products through established and emerging online platforms. Emerging citizen journalism and new media information marketing encompasses different mediums, including display advertising, content marketing, mobile apps and social media promotions. The crucial objective of this new strategy is how best libraries can reach their users, service impact and attracting users to library brand. Even though libraries are pro-actively engulfing these new online platforms in several areas of library such as library communications, marketing of information, brand creation, impact analysis etc., there are several other untouched areas which need to be tested and tried to exploit full potential of new media.Item Institutional Library Websites Affiliated to National Universities in Sri Lanka: a Content Analysis(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Attanayake, G.The main objectives of this study are to evaluate the content of websites in institutional libraries affiliated to national universities in Sri Lanka and identify the shortcomings of library websites. A total of nine libraries were selected for the study but three institutions were rejected due to non-availability of separate library websites. Observation was the primary data collection method and a checklist was designed to collect data. The study mainly corresponds to four categories; Library Management, Library Services, Resources and Other information. Five items were included under the segment of library management. All of the selected libraries were provided the introduction to their libraries opening hours, staff information and contact information. Eight items were considered with regard to library services. Three institutes totally neglected to include their library services to their sites. Four items were located under the segment of library resources and PGIM have completed all four items in check-list. Results of the study showed that out of twenty items, none of the libraries hit all the items in the check-list. The findings of this study revealed that the institutional library websites affiliated to universities in Sri Lanka have not setup at satisfactory levelItem Library “WOW”! Planning Orientation for Marketing Academic Libraries.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Thusithakumari, W.M.; Jayawardana, K.G.I.Wayamba University Library Network (WULN) leads a four - week orientation programme at the beginning of each new academic semester to open minds eye of fresher’s introduced as the Weeks of Welcome (WOW). Creating positive perceptions of academic libraries new student orientations provide as ideal opportunity to be more innovative and proactive in marketing of library resources and services. Currently the academic libraries are become to hybrid libraries and to familiarize the academic learning environment in e-information era. This study investigated the advancements of orientation programmes effect for marketing academic libraries. To find out the factors that influenced marketing of academic libraries through the orientation programmes was the other objective. A survey research method was applied for the study and two questionnaires (pre & post), group interviews and observations were used as data collection instruments. The population consists of 555 new students who attend and the complete programme. Based on the views as part of the new students orientation, scheduled to showcase the Wayamba University Library services, spaces and collections while having a lot of fun. The involvement in orientation had gone through many events which embraced the students: music, games, snacks and library services, library tour, video, creative activities, awarding gifts presented step-by-step guided over 500 participants. According to the results, the librarians were satisfied with strategies followed making attraction to the event, First year Experience (FYE) is better than First Year Instruction (FYI). The inadequate space, computers, large student groups (around 70 heads), time constraints and other university activities were identified as factors influenced on the library orientation.The study recommended to the orientation programme should be provided specific space and more time for the awareness programmes and should be Increased the number of computers for more accessibility of e-resources too. The fun activities based on library resources and services, library tour, snacks and gifts were very important to marketing academic libraries among new comers of the universities. In this scenario library users of the institutions are also eager to enrich the knowledge in subject as well as apart from curriculum for their survival. Therefore, they expect more from libraries especially in the part of resource for update their knowledge. Even though the responsibility of the library professionals is help to access information from different type of resources like print or electronic.Item Students' attitudes and perceptions on library user education programmes: A case study(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Punchihewa, C.N.D.; Kiriella, K.G.A.P.; Kumara, A.D.B.; Kodikara, R.C.This study examined the effectiveness of various types of user education programmes offered by Library University of Moratuwa. Four user education programmes were considered in this study, 'Library Orientation and Tour', 'Information for Research', Research and Plagiarism' and 'How to do Referencing'. Attitudes and the perception of the students towards these user education programmes were discussed in this study. A user survey was adopted and the undergraduate students and post graduate students who have participated in library user education programmes during 2014-2015 was the target group. Results of the study discovered that 88% of the students have gained the knowledge on library resources and services through the library user education programmes. Most importantly, 91.3% of students have stated that they were equipped with good research skills by participating in these library user education programmes. Results of this study encourage the library to continue the user education programmes to keep building research skills of the students while making necessary adjustments to fulfill the needs of modern library users.Item A Study of Changing Information Needs and Use Pattern of University Post Graduate Students.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Patil, S.S.; Kulkarni, J.N.The present study aims to determine the Changing information needs and Use pattern of University Post-Graduate students. Data were collected from 185 PG students from the three different schools of S.R.T.M.University, Nanded’s Sub-centre, Latur (Maharashtra State), India. Out of 220 PG Students a questionnaire was distributed to 216 PG students and 185 filled in questionnaires were returned, giving an overall response rate of 85.64 percent. It was found that respondents used various sources for acquiring the needed information. Books were ranked as the most important source for teaching and research purposes, followed by periodicals and e-resources. It was found that a majority of the students seek information mainly for doing assignments/seminars and general information with a total of 85.48% (53) and 75.81 % (47) respectively. Thus Social media sites were the most preferred communication channel among students followed by E-mails and mobile phones.Item User Perception of E-Resources Provided by the Kelaniya University Library: a Case Study(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Perera, W.P.G.L.; Suraweera, S.A.D.H.N.This paper aims to identify user perception of the e-resources provided by the University of Kelaniya library with the responses of two user categories. They are students and the academic staff of the university. The study was conducted as a web-based survey method for the academic staff and manual data collection method for the students. The sampling method used for this study is stratified random sampling method to select students and academic staff members from the population. This study has considered participant from five faculties. This is on user perception of e-resources provided by the library. E-resource acquisitions have increased with relating to the users’ demand in academic libraries. That is important for an academic library to acquire and arrange e-resource. Compare to present and past learning styles, e-resources have a major role in the academic process. The university libraries are the main learning resource provider of the university. They have to have the capacity to identify relevant information sources both versions in physical and electronic. This has covered ten parts mainly under the topic of E-resources. They are Arrangements for existing learning resources to support e-learning, New acquisitions to support the e-learning, Available databases related to the various subjects taught at your university, Digital library to support learning and teaching by sharing experts' research experiences and publications, Searching and evaluation facilities through the library website, Electronic resource access and sharing (online), Evaluation of e-resource facilities through the faculty CAL, Access for the university subscribed e-journals, e-books, databases and other course materials, both within and outside the university premises, the self-learning supportive videos / PPT and guidelines provided by the library, the preservation of the electronic resource, and provision to access digitized archives at your library
