    Issues Faced by the Undergraduates when Using University Libraries in Sri Lanka: a Study based on Kelaniya, Jayewardenepura, and Colombo Universities

    Information in today’s society occupies an important place. Information has become one of the basic needs of everybody in the society. In such a society, information takes the lead in every spheres. A large amount of information flow and outdate anywhere in the world in a matter of seconds. Libraries and information centres are the places where collection, organization and the dissemination of such information. The University is in the forefront of various studies, education, research, innovation and generation of new methods and tools. Accordingly, the Sri Lankan University system occupies a special place. The library occupies an important place in the university education system. Library is the heart of university education. It has become a modern accepted theory that the university library is the heart of any university. Education, Research, Knowledge, Preservation and Publication are the primary functions of a university. The principal objective of this study is to identify the problems and issues faced by the undergraduate readers when using university libraries. The survey method is used as the study method. The study population is the undergraduates studying in universities in Sri Lanka 150 undergraduates in three universities are selected as the sample among all universities. Three university libraries are University of Kelaniya, Jayewardenepura and Colombo. It is expected that the sample will be selected to represent the undergraduates in Art Faculties. About 50 undergraduates are selected from one university. A systematic questionnaire will be prepared in relation to the objectives of the study and primary data will be collected. The secondary data will be collected through written sources, such as research reports, journals, statistical records an online sources. It is intended to analyse primary data using quantitative and qualitative techniques. Various statistical methods are intended to use for better visualization of the results and the findings.

    Methods Used by Estate Communities in Procuring Information: a Study based on Haliela Divisional Secretariat Division in Sri Lanka

    Sri Lanka is still a developing country and as a whole there are places where information services and its dissemination is very poorly taken place. One such area is the estate sector in the up country region. Not only information services, the other economic, social, political and cultural benefits and incentives are lacking to those who are living in the up country estate premises. During the British period, Indian workers were brought for the tea the plantation purposes. Estate labor force accounts for 6% of Sri Lanka's population. Although the estate sectors development rate in Sri Lanka is low, the contribution of estate people to the gross domestic product of Sri Lanka is significant. The success of using the right methods for obtaining information in day-to-day life was not significantly as expected due to the deficiency of social, economic, cultural, political, and educational and information availability for the estate people in Sri Lanka. The problem of the study focuses on identifying the methods used for the acquisition of information of estate people with the types of information they needed. The other objectives of the research is to assure what methods using for getting their information, to examine these methods are used correctly. The study applies survey research. Both the primary and secondary data are used for the above research and the primary data is collected through interviews and questionnaires. The cluster sampling method is used collecting the data. 100 families in the up country estate sector will be used as the study sample. Hundreds of families belonging to three Grama Seva Divisions of the Haliela Divisional Secretariat Division in Badulla District will be selected for study in the ratio of 1: 2: 7. This research is very important because the quality of the media and methods used in the acquisition of information will undoubtedly help for the betterment of this marginalized communities in the estate sector. The results will be beneficial for this socially excluded people to divert for the social inclusion.

    Use of Academic Social Networking Sites in Research and Research Management Purposes: a Study based on the Academic Staff of the University of Kelaniya

    Due to the rapid growth of knowledge the information tends to grow exponentially in the world. There has been a tremendous expansion of knowledge in all fields such as political, economic, cultural, education and research and so on. As a result the increasing amount of the information new areas of subject domain are also multiplying at a larger scales. Information is so important in almost every field of human performance. Researchers and scholars from various disciplines carry out various research in different fields. Research has even been done in the past as well as continued in the future too. Researches are done by different kinds of people which include the academic staff of universities. It is very important to use research management tools, techniques and methodologies by the research communities especially by the academic staff of universities. There are educational, research and social networks sites in the web which can be applied for research management purposes. Some examples are Google scholar, Research Gate, Academia including LinkedIn. The list further includes Zotero, RefWorks, EndNote, Mendeley, Readcube, and Qiqqa and so on. Academic staff can use these networks and sites to manage their research. During their research process, the academic staff can include their research information in these networks and sites. Objective of the study is to study the use of those networks and sites by the academic staff for their research management purposes. The sample would be selected from the academic staff of faculties of Social Sciences, Humanities, Science, Commerce and Management including Computing and IT being 100 staff members of university of Kelaniya. Primary data collection will be done using the interviews, questionnaires, observations will be conducted. For collecting secondary data, dissertations, articles, internet data bases, web pages used. . It will be able to explore the present situation of staff using such networks and sites, the user behavior, staff attitudes and the issues and problems they face.

    Public relations is the process of building goodwill in a consumer about a product or service. Public relations is defined as the process of building a good image in the community of a product, service, the nature of a person's agency and their functioning. Public relations is a management process. This management process creates efficiency of an organization. One of the core objectives of an organization's services delivery efficiency is to create an effective service. It also helps the organization to have a good record of accomplishment in the service delivery and the community obtaining services. It also help to build a good image of the community as well as there are many implications in image building of the respective institution too. Therefore the public relations is a reciprocal function and activity. The purpose of the study is to identify what is public relations and to investigate the need for public relations processes in the building of image of the National Library as well as the sections of the institution

    Initiating the “Research Commons” in University Libraries in Sri Lanka: Exploratory Review

    Enhancing opportunities for research works is a premier objective in universities due to researches contribute in many ways for knowledge creation. Serve and meet the needs of researchers are considered as a foremost aim of university libraries. Newly introduced non-traditional resources and services create many openings for researchers. University libraries have being focusing more strongly on learner-centered and researcher-centered services today. Information commons, research commons, human library projects, counseling and consultation services, digital resource collections are new services in libraries. Research Commons is a very important concept among them and it has become “one-stop shopping” model for researchers in foreign universities. There is no Research Commons experience yet in Sri Lanka and it need to be developed in all libraries. Research Commons is a “knowledge-creation space” than “learning space”. Reviewed research articles, books, and web sites relevant to this concept were facilitated to conduct this study very much. Objective of this research work is to introduce the concept of “Research Commons” and discuss the approaches to initiate Research Commons in university libraries in Sri Lanka

There are different kind of educational institutes in world which produce best students for the society. The Raffles Design Institute is playing competitive role in the design field with every aspects. The library is heart of the institute and it is well organized with new technology and has a best attractive place in the premises which offer facilities for the students for conducting their studies well. Objectives of the study are to identify the importance of the library in practical based design education, to examine student’s response and requirements for the library and to explore satisfaction of students about the library

    Effectiveness of Using QR Codes for Ubiquitous Learning: a Case Study of University College, Ratmalana

    Ubiquitous learning rapidly becoming an essential part of learning culture within colleges and universities. The role that played by smart devices in this regard is quite remarkable. In Sri Lankan context using of smart technology in ubiquitous learning is still not popular. Therefore, the aim of this study was to recognize the effectiveness of using QR (Quick Response) codes through smart phones for ubiquitous learning among University College students. This research was carried out with the participation of students and lecturers of University College, Ratmalana. Selected Sample was provided with questionnaires and conducted interviews in order to collect necessary data. According to the response of the above mentioned sample group, using of QR codes in ubiquitous learning is advantageous and motivational in both learning and teaching

    A User Friendly OPAC for the School Libraries through Google Services

    The purpose of this study is to present a web OPAC model for the school libraries in Sri Lanka through Google services. Due to the lack of funds, equipped facilities and little attention of educational authorities’, the school libraries are still using the traditional methods to operate the library functions and services. This paper focusses the process of creating a web OPAC through Google services and the way of using the web OPAC in the school to acquire the maximum benefit to the library

    A Study about E- Government Services and Its Usage Provide by Sri Lanka Government to Citizens Specifically on Three Services.

    E government refers to the use of Information and communication technology give to provide citizens with more convenient access to the government’s services and information. As the usage of Information technology is growing fast, Sri Lankan government is making many efforts to provide services to its citizens through e government. In 2007, Sri Lanka government was adopted e government policy and then launched e government project with support of Sri Lanka Information Communication Technology Agency (ICTA). There are many e government services which delivered by Sri Lankan e government to its citizens. Among these e government services selected three e services which most important to citizens in their day today life. Those are online exam result services, online vehicle license service and online train schedule service to this research. Sri Lankan government is spending lot of money one government project. The purpose of the research is study about the usage of e government service in rural areas. The method of this research is interviews and questionnaire. The data collection-using questionnaire from 300 people who lived in Benthota Divisional Secretariat Division. How the communities use e government services is surveyed. Their awareness, attitudes also studied. It is also expected to study the facilities and provisions of e government services available in those intuitions attached to Benthota Divisional Secretariat Division.

    Usage of E-Government Services Provided by Sri Lankan Government for Citizen.

    Increase the people’s participation of all the government affairs using the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and new Medias, creates a good governance. Provisions of all the needy services of people and working continuously with those to build a better connection with them through all the means ICTs is called as e-government services. Information of any given country is a resource, which directly affect the all civilians. E-government services are developed to offer government services quickly and accurately for the public. The e-government services policy formulated by Sri Lankan government and implemented with a joint effort by Information and Communication Technology Agency office attached to government of Sri Lanka. The purpose of the study is to survey on the poor awareness of the public on e-services offered by the government. The principal objective of this study is to investigate the use of e government services provided by Sri Lankan government to the public. The data will be collected by selecting a random sample from the scholars in the field of education using categories like physicians, lawyers, academic staff of universities and the teachers. It is expected to choose 50 scholars from each of the above mentioned filed. Data will be collected by questionnaire and interview methods. Excel and SPSS software will be used in the data analysis. The tendency of public towards the usage of Sri Lankan e-government services could be increased with the results of the study.
