This paper discusses the technological skills which are essential for librarians. This paper also discusses the Emerging Technologies for Librarians, the skills needed for Librarians and Changing Role of Librarians in the New Digital Environment.Item A Study on the Factors for Motivation of University Librarians of Sri Lanka in Continuing their Professional Education(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Samarakoon, M.; de Silva, G.The present electronic environment has demanded a change of skills for library and information science professionals such as technical skills, IT skills, and managerial skills etc., Continuing Professional Education (CPE) is a lifelong process to develop and maintain knowledge, skills, values, ethics and attitudes relevant to professionals to achieve professional goals and to succeed in their respective careers. CPE is an important platform for professionals in terms of updating of professional knowledge and improvement of professional competence of their working lives. Objectives of this study were to identify motivational factors for the CPE, to decide on the librarians’ needs and performance of CPE, different methods to motivate librarians towards CPE. The research methodology used in this study is survey method. Questionnaires, observations and interviews were used as principle techniques. The research methods are used for obtaining qualitative and quantitative data for the analysis. Data were presented using charts, tables, graphs etc. The sample taken for this study consists of 100 personnel. Also 54 professionals filled the questionnaires and returned for the purpose of this study. Samples of hundred professionals from 15 prominent, reputed and recognized universities have been selected. It was revealed that the female library professionals outnumber the males in the university libraries. They are engaged in research and publication activities. But there is no strong relationship between work experience and research and publications. Professionals are highly motivated to the need of updating of knowledge and skills, to widen experience and practical knowledge in the practice of librarianship, better service to others, new and creative ideas, ability to study effectively. They require CPE programs for ICT, information literacy and awareness of new library trends. A program in CPE should be provided for all library professionals according to their interests and involvement. Establishment of an association for CPE and performance reviews are suggested to develop high standards in CPE at university libraries.Item Continuing Education for LIS Professionals in India: A Study(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Raza, M.M.; Subhan, M.Librarians have to play the part of intermediary between the vast network of resources and its consumers. To meet the ever-changing demands of the users, library professionals require constantly updated knowledge and skills for effective performance. Continuing education is necessary for every professional. Capability of a library depends largely on the skills of its staff. Hence, it is important to assess the qualities of library professionals for continuing education and professional development in the changing electronic environment. The most frequently asked general qualities are communication skill, personal IT skills, knowledge/awareness of IT systems and applications, staff management, strategic management. To develop these qualities in library professionals various types of programs such as conferences, workshops, symposiums, distance learning, are being organized. The purpose of this paper is to identify the continuing education practices in the field of LIS. The data will be collected from different online sources. This study highlights the contribution of universities, colleges, professional bodies in updating and keeping professionals abreast with the latest tools and techniques in the field of LIS. Secondly it focuses on areas of LIS on which these programs are being conducted in India from 2015 to mid 2016. Such programs cover vast range of topics i.e. Digitization, Information Networks, Knowledge Management, Resource Management, etc. and help us in identifying the modern trends in LIS.Item Awareness of Knowledge Management Process among Librarians of Engineering Colleges Affiliated to Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore: A Study(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Parameswaran, R.Knowledge Management [KM] originated in the early 1990 and is found to be successfully incorporated in government, health care and information sectors. This analytical study provides fundamental understanding on awareness of knowledge management processes among the librarians of engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University of Technology, Coimbatore.Survey method is followed to collect the data and questionnaire is used as a principal tool for the collection of primary data. The data is analyzed by using the statistical methods like Percentage analysis, Average score analysis, Rank analysis and Chi-Square (χ2), ANOVA and SWOT analysis to export the findings. This study focuses on the qualitative method that is used to investigate the understanding of knowledge management among librarians. This chapter describes the research design, sample selection method, data collection, hypothesis construction, data analysis framework, data processing methods and limitation of the study. It also provides with an overview about the statistical tool and methods applied for the research. The population of this research is the librarians of engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University of technology, Coimbatore which includes 3 government engineering colleges, 2 government aided engineering colleges, 141 self financing engineering colleges and 36 standalone institutions functioning at the time of the study. The major findings of the study revealed that the librarians of studied institutions have good awareness on knowledge management basic, resources and techniques. It is obvious that the ways of knowing of knowledge management process among the librarians are varied. The importance of knowledge management practices in libraries is accepted by most of the respondents. Due to the varying understanding of knowledge management processes, few of the respondents have a shallow perception of the knowledge management processes.
