Item Role and the Contribution of Advisory Committee of Public Libraries in Sri Lanka: a Study based on Selected Public Libraries in Matara District(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Sandamali, W.M.A.Public libraries make a significant contribution for producing intelligent citizens who are enriched by knowledge. The public library is the only institution which provides free services to all sections of the society irrespective of age, religion and religion. In order to preserve its democratic quality, a public library needs to be properly organized. The various committees of a library have different roles and responsibilities to play. Advisory committee or Library Committee which have a strong impact on the subject and some library committees have a good reputation and make substantial contribution to the society. The Library Advisory committee has a tremendous contribution to help libraries and to achieve people’s aspiration with a clear direction for achieving their goals. The purpose of this consultative committee is to study the impact of library development on public library work. The research method used for this study is the survey method. Among all public libraries in Matara district, six public libraries which comprised of library advisor committees use as the sample. The primary data will be collected using questionnaires and interviews. Analysed data will be presented using tables, charts and diagrams with due interpretations.Item Attitudes of International Students on the Use of University Libraries: a Case Study based on University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Judith, N.This paper aims at investigating international undergraduate students’ library use and their attitudes and perceptions towards the library at the University of Kelaniya. These students' library use as well as their perception are explored since the number of foreign students in the university is increasing therefore librarians ought to improve their commitment to enhance library services for this special community of users. Besides, this paper explore the number of students who do and do not use the university library both physical and online access and services. Study population is total international students at University of Kelaniya and a sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling formula. Study applies survey research design. Primary data will be collected using structured questionnaire, observation and using interview technique. It determines how to increase the number of the users, identifies how the library has benefited those students that use it since academic libraries have a great impact on students education in the university. This paper examines the situation of the current library settings which is to be improved by the librarians in a proper manner and it is viable to improve a cordial dialog and relationship between the library staff and the international students. Customer care, library marketing and public relations are some of the key areas which should be developed among the library staff.Item User Satisfaction of Information Resources, Services and Facilities in Libraries in Sri Lanka: based on Selected Public Libraries in Kurunegala District(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Kalpani, M.P.S.The main purpose of a library is to fulfill the information needs of the society. With the advent of new ICTs, information is increasingly being emerging in various media. Therefore, as did earlier, the library services should act as a social service provider to serve the needs of the reader community at present. The main objective of this paper is to study the readers' satisfaction with the information resources, library services and facilities provided by the public libraries in Sri Lanka. Other objectives include identifying the library resources available in public libraries, studying what text services are provided by the public libraries, identifying the reader's understanding of the services and facilities provided by the public library's information sources, and studying the relationship between library staff and readers and the identification of the problems that affect, how readers are satisfied and the problem and issues facing public libraries in Sri lanka. The survey method is expected to be used as the research method. Public Libraries in the country as per the Census of Libraries published by the Sri Lanka National Library and Documentation Service Board (NLDSB) will be the study population and the sample will be selected from 20 libraries using ten readers who registered in each types of library under the Municipal, Urban and Pradeshiya Sabha authorities totaling 200 readers as the study sample. It is expected to be collect data using the age group 16 to 55 of the reader category. It is expected to obtain primary data through a structured questionnaire and interviews with librarians. The aim is to obtain secondary data from the annual reports and directories published by NLDSB and respective libraries, dissertations, research journals, As a result of this research, steps can be taken to further development of the services of the public libraries in Sri Lanka. Actions can be identified for the improvement of reader services in such libraries.Item The Comparative study on the Children Library Service in Public Libraries in Sri Lanka:Libraries Selected from Gampaha District.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Sanjeewani, M.D.S.M.; Sandamali, A.W.M.When Creating Citizens to the Society with Intellectuals and with more disciplined, the Public Library would contribute much for this task. The main duty that contributes by a library are collecting Knowledge, Organizing, depositing and giving facilities to the reader to obtain the necessary knowledge for usage. The public library is the only institution, which gives services without any charge from the public, and it does not consider the intellects, ignorant, race, creed, religion and the age. The public library supplies service on behalf of the children and adults. The aim of this study is to focus the activities of the children libraries attached to public libraries in the municipals, urban councils and Divisional Secretaries in the Gampaha district. The issues faced with the public libraries when giving efficient and more fruitful service to the children is the research problem. According to the problems identified, there a search has been done by this study to identify at what is level of the continuance and the activities of the service of the children library services attached to public libraries. In order to collect data, questionnaires, interviews, discussions, investigations etc. have been used. When identifying the issues and problems those affected to the development of the children’s library service in the Gampaha district, many reasons have been forwarded to follow the procedure to improving the conditions of the children affiliated library service in the Gampaha district. Main problem was the non-receipt of the infrastructure facilities as needed. It was also further disclosed that the infrastructure facilities that is given to the public libraries must be improved. It was revealed by this study that at what level is the service of the children libraries in the Gampaha district are. Accordingly the termination is noted with how the problems affected for the children libraries and the suitable ideas and proposals to solve those problems.Item A Comparative Study on the Provincial Library Services Boards in Sri Lanka.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Bandara, D.K.G.R.S.Provincial library development project has started in 1990 in order to decentralize the library system and services. Through, it has passed about 30 years after the beginning of the provincial library development project, there are only few actively existing provincial library services boards such as Uwa, Central, North Central and Sabaragamuwa. In fact, this study deals with the comparative study on provincial library services boards in Sri Lanka. The objectives of this paper are to study the existing activity and the situation of provincial library services boards and to identify the different programs and services among them, to investigate the contribution of the decentralization library service to the development process of the country and to identify the issues in the of provincial library services boards. The study is based on the assumption that effective of provincial library services boards are not functioning in a proper manner. This study is conducted both qualitative and quantitative data to be collected from primary and secondary sources. When collecting primary data, interviews, questionnaires are will be used. Prediction, comparison, relationship, critical analysis, illustrations and the SPSS data analyzing software will be used in data analysis. As the population, the effective provincial library service boards like Uwa, Central, North Central and Sabaragamuwa will be taken. 100 selected public and school libraries representing these four provinces will be used as the sample. 60% among these are public libraries while the rest 40% is school libraries. It is important to study about the provincial library development project as it is a recently started project in library field.Item A Study on User Satisfaction of Undergraduates of Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Shanmugathasan, S.Academic libraries play a pivotal role in the transmission of information and knowledge in higher educational institutions. The user community is the most important component of a library. Every information service exists for the sole aim of satisfying its users. This study investigates to explore the utilization and user satisfaction of the Vavuniya Campus Library. The study was carried out using a survey methodology by employing 150 undergraduates chosen across two faculties of five degree programs on the stratified random sampling technique for the study. The results showed that though overall satisfaction with the Library services recorded a satisfactory rating, there is more room for improvement as far as the services and resources. There is lack of adequate facilities, especially inadequate space and non conducive environment, and internet or ICT services in the Campus Library. It is recommended to house the library in a permanent building with full fledged facilities.Item Quality Management System in Libraries: A Case Study(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Rao, P.V.International Standards are the backbone of the society, ensuring the safety and quality of products and services, facilitating and improving the present environment in which we live in. Conformity to International Standards helps reassure consumers those products, systems and organizations are safe, reliable and good for the environment. When products and services conform to International Standards consumers can have confidence that they are safe, reliable and of good quality. ISO 9001 is a worldwide standard designed and developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), Switzerland. ISO 9001 is currently in use by close to one million organizations around the world. It is truly a worldwide standard for quality. Obtaining ISO 9001 certification puts libraries in a very select group. ISO standards draw on international expertise and experience and are therefore a vital resource for governments when developing public policy. Libraries around the world can the standards to provide quality library and information services to their clientele. A quality management system (QMS) is a formalized system that documents processes, procedures, and responsibilities for achieving quality policies and objectives. A QMS helps coordinate and direct an organization’s activities to meet customer and regulatory requirements and improve its effectiveness and efficiency on a continuous basis. ISO 9001:2015 is an example of a Quality Management System. ISO 9001:2015, the international standard specifying requirements for quality management systems, is the most prominent approach to quality management systems. For libraries, certification can be a useful tool to add credibility, by demonstrating that services provided meet the expectations of users. The benefits of the certification are numerous and include user satisfaction and user centred services in the libraries. The paper discusses the various benefits of quality management system in libraries and adopting a quality management system standard; describe the various issues related to ISO 9001:2015 standard; and shares a case study of implementing such a system in the library attached to M G State Institute of Public Administration, Punjab, Chandigarh (India).
