    Continuous Professional Development Programs Conducted by the Public Libraries in Sri Lanka: a Study based on Selected Public libraries in Western and Uva Provinces

    This paper is an attempt to study the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Programs in public libraries in Sri Lanka. Continuous Professional Development the means by which members of respective profession develop, maintain, improve, and broaden their knowledge and skills and develop the personal qualities required to uplift their professional development. The principal purpose of the study is to examine the status of participation of public librarians for the Continuous Professional Development Programs in Sri Lanka. The other objectives are to explore what is the level of participation of public librarians in CPD, to identify the institutions offering CPD programs, to identify what are the most productive and effective CPD programs which are very fitting to public libraries and librarians and to explore the basic benefits of CPD and to investigate its performances. Method of the study is the survey research. The research studied under selected Municipal councils, Urban Councils including Pradeshiya Sabha, in Western and Uva provinces and the libraries selected in the grades 1st, 2nd, and 3rd as based on the criteria laid down by the National Library and Documentation Services Board, Sri Lanka. Primary data will be collected through site visit, discussion followed by the observation both participatory and non-participatory. Further data would be collected using two separate questionnaires focusing the librarians and resource persons and the concerned institutions. For collecting the secondary data, web site and data and statistical reports of the Ministry of Local Government and provincial council are used. The research information will be presented on what is the CPD, why is it needed, how public librarians would participate for the CPD Programs. The attentions will be given who will support for the public librarians in the process, what are new CPD programs to be introduced, what are new tendencies, problems, and challenges of these CPD programs. Accordingly, based on the survey data findings and conclusions will be drawn for the future betterment of the relevant filed and the CPD.

    Role and the Contribution of Advisory Committee of Public Libraries in Sri Lanka: a Study based on Selected Public Libraries in Matara District

    Public libraries make a significant contribution for producing intelligent citizens who are enriched by knowledge. The public library is the only institution which provides free services to all sections of the society irrespective of age, religion and religion. In order to preserve its democratic quality, a public library needs to be properly organized. The various committees of a library have different roles and responsibilities to play. Advisory committee or Library Committee which have a strong impact on the subject and some library committees have a good reputation and make substantial contribution to the society. The Library Advisory committee has a tremendous contribution to help libraries and to achieve people’s aspiration with a clear direction for achieving their goals. The purpose of this consultative committee is to study the impact of library development on public library work. The research method used for this study is the survey method. Among all public libraries in Matara district, six public libraries which comprised of library advisor committees use as the sample. The primary data will be collected using questionnaires and interviews. Analysed data will be presented using tables, charts and diagrams with due interpretations.

    User Satisfaction of Information Resources, Services and Facilities in Libraries in Sri Lanka: based on Selected Public Libraries in Kurunegala District

    The main purpose of a library is to fulfill the information needs of the society. With the advent of new ICTs, information is increasingly being emerging in various media. Therefore, as did earlier, the library services should act as a social service provider to serve the needs of the reader community at present. The main objective of this paper is to study the readers' satisfaction with the information resources, library services and facilities provided by the public libraries in Sri Lanka. Other objectives include identifying the library resources available in public libraries, studying what text services are provided by the public libraries, identifying the reader's understanding of the services and facilities provided by the public library's information sources, and studying the relationship between library staff and readers and the identification of the problems that affect, how readers are satisfied and the problem and issues facing public libraries in Sri lanka. The survey method is expected to be used as the research method. Public Libraries in the country as per the Census of Libraries published by the Sri Lanka National Library and Documentation Service Board (NLDSB) will be the study population and the sample will be selected from 20 libraries using ten readers who registered in each types of library under the Municipal, Urban and Pradeshiya Sabha authorities totaling 200 readers as the study sample. It is expected to be collect data using the age group 16 to 55 of the reader category. It is expected to obtain primary data through a structured questionnaire and interviews with librarians. The aim is to obtain secondary data from the annual reports and directories published by NLDSB and respective libraries, dissertations, research journals, As a result of this research, steps can be taken to further development of the services of the public libraries in Sri Lanka. Actions can be identified for the improvement of reader services in such libraries.

    Job Satisfaction among Public Library Professionals: a Gender base Comparison

    The purpose of the study is to examine gender base job satisfaction among Public library professionals in Anuradhapura District .Survey method was carried to achieve the goal. Questionnaire was used as the data collection tool. The study shows both positive and negative signs of satisfaction among the professionals. This paper may benefit Government Authority by encouraging librarians to contribute more to their jobs and may help them in their personal growth and development.

    Impact of Public Libraries in Fulfilling Information Needs of User Communities: a Study based on Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Colombo and Batticaloa districts

    Due to various activities such as educational, research, economic, political and cultural activities, information flowing to human knowledge has become a major stream. With the fast of beginning this information, readers' information needs are rapidly growing, and information is so closely linked to human life. The responsibility of transmitting the information thus generated to the reader and inheriting it for future needs rests with the Library and Information Centers. Though there is internet, its access for general public particularly the marginalized communities has been a severe problem and made a severe information gap too. In this context public libraries extend information services for all communities. Public libraries can be introduced as an institution for all people with equal access to all members for knowledge, information and imaginative purposes through a wide range of resources and services. The main objective of this research is to study the usefulness of public libraries in the achievement of reader information needs. Identifying the information needs of the readers, identifying the nature of the information required for the readers, identifying the types and sources of information, how important are the public libraries to the information needs, what are the existing problems, and the personal development of the readers, information literacy. How important are public libraries to developing reading skills.The Population of the study comprised of public libraries established in Sri Lanka and the research sample was five public libraries in five districts in the three provinces. The research method was the survey design and used questionnaire and the interview technique. The data obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques, such as tables, charts and percentages.As a result of the research, it was found that public libraries are not in a proper status of satisfying the user’s information needs. It was also revealed that users face several problems when they find information. This is mainly due to lack of up-to-date information sources in the library, lack of good information management, lack of reader advocacy programs, lack of familiarity with the staff and lack of support and guidance from staff in fulfilling information needs and services. This ensures that public libraries need to implement an effective, efficient and informative mechanism for accurately identifying user’s information needs.

    An Analytical Study on the Library Acquisition Policy of Public Libraries: Study based on the Public Libraries in Kegalle District

    All Libraries should follow library policies for success services and activities. Public library proved user’s present needs and future needs and also parent body needs. Therefore public library should follow acquisitions policy success their goals and objectives. This research main objective to study library acquisition policies followed by Public Libraries in Kegalle. The secondary objective was analysing the library acquisition policy if enacted. Survey methodology was used in the research in which both qualitative and quantitative data were gathered. The research sample consists of 5 Public Libraries in Kegalle District. They were situated at Kegalle, Mawanella, Rambukkana, and Ruwanwella Pradeshiya Sabhas. The study observed a 100% absence of a written library acquisition policy in researched libraries. The study observed a 100% absence of a policy in activities. Conclusions of study the libraries do not follow a library acquisitions policy. There is no written library acquisitions policy as well. A written library acquisitions policy has to be introduced to each library to be set as a guideline to standardize the activities done in the libraries

    Public Library User’s Reading Habits: a Study

    The study sought to consider reading habits among public library users. Reading is an art of interpreting the printed tools and written words. Reading is considered a stepping stone to success, not just in schools but also throughout the adult life of an individual. Also, it is regarded as a process, a mode of thinking, a kind of real experience and involves many complex skills: the ability to perceive printed words, to skim for information and then perhaps read intensively. With adult readers, it is also found that reading contributes significantly to job success, career development and ability to respond to change. A public library is a library for the general public. That is accessible for a child to adult and there are no age barriers. Public libraries exist in many countries across the world and are often considered an essential part of having an educated and literate population. This study aims to understand the nature of reading in general, focused on user attitudes towards reading habits. Also indicated that the purpose of reading, preference of language, preferred from of the library collection, assistance from the library staff in the use of resources and services is necessary to users meet their information requirements. Study was conducted in Uva province, Badulla District selecting the main public libraries at Badulla and users of those selected institutions. 120 Questionnaires were distributed among users of two main public libraries using the simple random sampling technique, respondents’ rate was 98.3%. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software, Figures and Tables were used to present the result of the findings. The findings showed that majority of the respondents acknowledged the importance of reading their subject textbooks, novels, Newspapers and Newspaper supplements. Further, the data suggest that although the availability of digital reading materials ware prominent, users like to read print books than electronic materials. Prefered language of reading was mothertongue. Also the data dipicts that the most feverable place of reading among users as their personal space. The majority of the respondents showcased that the public library and the staff ware more userfriendly and supportive in providing the needy reading materials. This research findings suggest that it is necessary to imrove the use of automated library services which are more easyer to reach in modern library systems, Also it provdes more learning spaces for future readers, this includes use of scientific, academic reading contents

    Current Status & Future Challenges of the Public Libraries in Sri Lanka for the Pattern Change: a Case Study

    This study focuses on the current status future challengers of the public libraries where located in the Polonnaruwa district in the North Central Province (NCP) in Sri Lanka with the perspectives of its properties, services, users and the staffs and latter part of the discusses the future challenges with the pattern change of the library professionals’ perspective. The questionnaire and interview were used as instruments in this study to collect data. The study revealed that the public libraries of Polonnaruwa District are not in the correct position by collection development. It also pointed out the most of the libraries are administered by the non-professional staffs. The major challenger was examined that library staffs are not in the good satisfaction level about their promotion mechanism. Finally it was reviled that the need of deep study about their problems strategically and address them quickly to uplift the service to the up to date level

    User Education Process in Public Libraries in Sri Lanka: with Special Reference to Libraries attached to Pradeshiya Sabhas

    Libraries are a place to use literature, music, art, or reference sources, including books, manuscripts, reports or art, without the purpose of selling. (Merriam Webster Online Dictionary, 2011). The education on propagating and making the awareness on the use of library and information sources, provided by libraries or information centers is known as User Education. Different libraries and information centers use vivid user education systems and services at weaker and higher levels. The study aims to study User education practices in relation to Pradeshiya Sabha libraries, to study the organization as well as to explore the reasons for its lack and to make suggestions to improve the User education. For this study, five public libraries administered by the Pradeshiya Sabha of Kandy district were selected using a random sample. For this Study, 100 men and women, 20 from each library, were included in the research. Primary data was collected by giving questionnaires to the contributors. Approved statistical reports were used to obtain the Secondary information. Although many issues are being discussed in the field of Sri Lankan libraries, the activities of the local libraries are still in progress
