A.Information in today’s society occupies an important place. Information has become one of the basic needs of everybody in the society. In such a society, information takes the lead in every spheres. A large amount of information flow and outdate anywhere in the world in a matter of seconds. Libraries and information centres are the places where collection, organization and the dissemination of such information. The University is in the forefront of various studies, education, research, innovation and generation of new methods and tools. Accordingly, the Sri Lankan University system occupies a special place. The library occupies an important place in the university education system. Library is the heart of university education. It has become a modern accepted theory that the university library is the heart of any university. Education, Research, Knowledge, Preservation and Publication are the primary functions of a university. The principal objective of this study is to identify the problems and issues faced by the undergraduate readers when using university libraries. The survey method is used as the study method. The study population is the undergraduates studying in universities in Sri Lanka 150 undergraduates in three universities are selected as the sample among all universities. Three university libraries are University of Kelaniya, Jayewardenepura and Colombo. It is expected that the sample will be selected to represent the undergraduates in Art Faculties. About 50 undergraduates are selected from one university. A systematic questionnaire will be prepared in relation to the objectives of the study and primary data will be collected. The secondary data will be collected through written sources, such as research reports, journals, statistical records an online sources. It is intended to analyse primary data using quantitative and qualitative techniques. Various statistical methods are intended to use for better visualization of the results and the findings.Item Attitudes of International Students on the Use of University Libraries: a Case Study based on University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Judith, N.This paper aims at investigating international undergraduate students’ library use and their attitudes and perceptions towards the library at the University of Kelaniya. These students' library use as well as their perception are explored since the number of foreign students in the university is increasing therefore librarians ought to improve their commitment to enhance library services for this special community of users. Besides, this paper explore the number of students who do and do not use the university library both physical and online access and services. Study population is total international students at University of Kelaniya and a sample will be selected using an appropriate sampling formula. Study applies survey research design. Primary data will be collected using structured questionnaire, observation and using interview technique. It determines how to increase the number of the users, identifies how the library has benefited those students that use it since academic libraries have a great impact on students education in the university. This paper examines the situation of the current library settings which is to be improved by the librarians in a proper manner and it is viable to improve a cordial dialog and relationship between the library staff and the international students. (Merriam Webster Online Dictionary, 2011). The education on propagating and making the awareness on the use of library and information sources, provided by libraries or information centers is known as User Education. Different libraries and information centers use vivid user education systems and services at weaker and higher levels. The study aims to study User education practices in relation to Pradeshiya Sabha libraries, to study the organization as well as to explore the reasons for its lack and to make suggestions to improve the User education. For this study, five public libraries administered by the Pradeshiya Sabha of Kandy district were selected using a random sample. For this Study, 100 men and women, 20 from each library, were included in the research. Primary data was collected by giving questionnaires to the contributors. Although many issues are being discussed in the field of Sri Lankan libraries, the activities of the local libraries are still in progressItem A Study on Information Literacy (IL) Skills of Undergraduates: With Special Reference to Buddhist and Pali University of Sri Lanka.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Samarakoon, M.Information Literacy skills are acutely needed for undergraduates. Today the passing society belongs to the information era. Information literacy is the ability to access, evaluate, organize and use information, problem solving and to make decisions. All professionals are influenced as information technology and there are a number of challenges to the information seekers. This research aims to conduct an investigation of the skills of the undergraduates seeking information by themselves. Objectives of this study was to examine the awareness of information literacy skills, to Identify the perception of students’ ability of IL, to identify the obstacles in information seeking and to recommend the suggestions to improve information literacy among undergraduates. The research method used in this study is survey design. Questionnaires, interviews and observation were used as principle techniques for primary data collection. Questionnaires were distributed between 9 am -10 am per two weeks to those undergraduates who are come to the library representing first and second year students. The Questionnaires covered question on citation and reference styles, searching methods and strategies, plagiarism etc. Few faculty members were randomly selected and interviews were conducted. Personal observations were carried out on students’ information searching, catalogue usage, finding information resources etc. Data is presented and analyzed graphically in tabulated forms. The study reveals that the students lack of locating skills. The respondents do not have very clear idea on the types of E-resources. Students are aware of the meaning of the ‘plagiarism”. They believe that the internet is the most current and accurate information source. They do not have a fair idea about methods and tools to be used for retrieval of information from related information sources. Students’ ability of referencing is low. The study makes several recommendations that the program to IL skills has to be planned for all undergraduates. Short time program should be introduced parallel with first year orientation program. Bibliographical workshops, short time courses should be introduced by university library. IL program should include an assessment of student learning and Individual assessments should be developed in consultation with the faculty members and also to be Collaborated with faculty to create effective research assignment.Item A Study on the Use and the Problems Faced by the Students in Using Library Web Page of University of Kelaniya(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Deepika, D.M.P.P.University library has contributed immensely for the research, teaching and learning functions in the University systems and it has become an apex body in the higher education. Library web page has helped to expand the library services among the society and user community. The principal objective of the study was to investigate the use trends of library web page and the problem faced by the students in using it. Library web page of University of Kelaniya was used for this study. The students community of Faculty of Social Sciences, Humanities, Commerce and Management and Science was the population of study while 147 students selecting from all these faculties was used a sample. A questionnaire was administered for data collection purpose. Among total sample 75% students use the library web site. Students’ prefer to use more frequently the old question papers as well as e-resources. Main obstacles faced by the students were the utility of access terms and how to use them for effective information retrieval purposes. The other obstacle was the non-up to datedness of the contents of the University library page. It is better if steps are taken to update the web page continuously and take action for open and free access not limiting to access terms to make user friendly more attractive interfaces and to offer more awareness programs on University library web site among students.Item A Study on the Use of Contents in the IFLA Manifesto on Public Libraries, Based on Public Libraries in Colombo, Kurunagala and Gampaha Districts(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) de Alwis, K.V.I.The principal objective of this paper is to investigate the quality and status of public library services in Sri Lanka in line with IFLA Public library manifesto. The study problem was how far the IFLA Public library manifesto is utilized by the public libraries in Sri Lanka. The other objectives are to identify the services provided by public libraries, to study the existing progress of public library services and to identify the obstacle faced by the public library in providing their services. Population was the total number of Librarians including user community in the public libraries in Colombo, Kurunagala and Gampahadestricts. Sample was 30 public librarians, 30 library users selecting from three districts using non-probability sampling techniques. Primary data collected using a questionnaires followed by an interview. Main findings were that 12 elements stated in the IFLA Public library manifesto are not used adequately by the public librarians and users were unsatisfied with the provisions of library services. Suggestions are to expand the user education programs for making full awareness on the library services provided by public libraries, to improve ICT and internet facilities and make reading promotion and to make a good relationship between the user community with library staff.
