For the first time in entire human history, the growth and capturing of information had grown exponentially over the last decade. According to Eric Schmidt, the CEO of Google, the information that is being created in every two days is as much as the information that was produced since the dawn of civilization up until 2003. However, even when the world is at the technology revolution with the unimaginable amount of information, some organizations in the world are still very much disconnected with technology and uses legacy, traditional approaches for many projects. In large scale global events it is vital to use proper mechanisms to manage and update information as using the right information at the right time will make different tasks much cost effective and efficient. This study is based on one of the international events organized by a government organization in Sri Lanka and intend to discuss the effectiveness and efficiency of the processes had the proper mechanisms were used along with information management. It was also seen during the study that many challenges were posed when attempting to introduce technology for information management as many government employees used to work in legacy methods and reluctant to adapt technology even it eases the amount of work. Another important finding is that government employees were very rule abide and always think of working within the boundaries cross referring to the books and think if technology is being introduced the ways of tracking the work is not possible or is not legal. Therefore, before making every decision, it had become a habit of referring to the next level of authority till the highest level for approval even for a small task that is within the rule for employees to complete. Taking responsibility and accountability of work being done is greatly lacking in government systems. Hence using information and technology for special events such as the study analysed in this paper is greatly absent as employees don’t believe in electronic records even they are well valid in legal frame of audits. However, several sub bodies were seen making attempt to use technology for information management, but without the due support from its peers the effort is nothing but futile. Even when having top notch project scheduling resources like BaseCamp, it was hardly seen been used in this project. The information that was discussed and presented at meetings were widely ignored or people were only making notes of what is been assigned to them rather than looking into the project as combined effort, making it difficult to share information even through a tool such as BaseCamp. The objective of this paper is to discuss the challenges faced in organizing an international conference when there was lot of reluctant using technology and systems for information management.Item Impact of Technology on the Customer Satisfaction - A Study with Reference to Sri Lankan Banking Sector(Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Amarathunga, P.A.B.H.; Pathiratne, S.Developments in information technology, telecommunication and internet utilization has changed drastically the relationship focused activities into data oriented operations. Sri Lankan Bnaking sector is one such sector affected by this. To study the factors that influence the contentment, attention is fixated on factors directly cognate to the customer contentment. The desideratum for the study is to ascertain concrete factors and their influence on the posture of the customers. The present study tries to see strategies to understand the demeanor of customers and explore ways of their incorporation into a well-designed set of policies. As the main aim of the study is to ken the impact of technology on the contentment of customers, Survey and questionnaire were used with two components. Convenient sampling technique was employed in the cull of banks located in and around Kuliyapitiaya town of North Western Province of Sri Lanka and Personal interview method was adopted to gather the primary data. The present study finds that majority of customers are satisfied with the services they are receiving in the banks. There are some customers who are not satisfied with the services i.e.,procedure to apply for loan, interest on the loans, debit and credit cards, mobile banking and customer care. It is therefore suggested that this disstisfctioin ie removed. It is postulated that the procedures cognate to taking the imprest is causing dissatisfaction to some of the customers, hence bank ascendant entities are required to look into this factor and some of the intricate procedures which involved in the sanctioning of loan may be relaxed to certain extent. Similarly, the quandaries cognate to debit cards and credit cards must be taken earnestly as some of the customers are facing quandaries with these accommodations. Further, the banks should develop efficient complaint solving system with innovative modern advance technology as it enhances the gratification of the customers.Item Emerging Approaches of Technology for Teaching People with Special Needs(Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2014) Nawaz, AliModern technology has performed a vital role for teaching people with special needs. The Internet is no exception. Home pages enable us to view vast quantities of information without having to move an inch. The Internet also allows us to exchange email with people in far-flung places, while, provided the necessary equipment is in hand, we can also use television conferencing systems to hold simultaneous two way exchanges. However, the development of such means of communication brings with it the risk that we may lose sight of our own locality. We can use networks to find out about what is happening in the various distant regions of the world. Advances in technology, such as the Internet and e-mail, have made it easier for people to communicate with one other and to share information among them. These same changes, however, have made it more difficult to protect the privacy of our communications and information-sharing. What does privacy mean in the information age and can it be protected? Can we prevent phone calls or email messages from being intercepted? Therefore, this paper will explore these and other issues of privacy from university academics with student community. This paper presents the introduction of Digital Rights Management systems used to protect copyrighted content, why these systems are emphasized and by whom. Legal and technical aspects of such methods are also introduced. Moreover, progress in antipiracy techniques and reasons for the current situation with online piracy are explained. In addition to presenting an alternative model for digital entertainment business, a new distribution system based on direct subscription on downloadable media files is suggested. Positive and negative aspects of these options are discussed, indicating how copyright owners and distributors will approach these challenges. According to my view, Digital Rights Management, its potential and problems has been a very interesting field of studies and professional outcome will prove useful for further research. Therefore, every academics & University student community should learn about the following; Current international privacy laws and how they are being implemented; Whether regional privacy rules can work and What level of privacy organizations and individuals can reasonably expect in the futureItem A New Approach to Typological Classification of Pottery: A Case Study of Lower Kirindi oya Basin in Southern Sri Lanka(University of Kelaniya, 2005) Dissanayake, R.D.This is an analytical study of ancient pottery recovered from the Lower Kirindi oya Basin (LKB) in Hambantota district of the Southern Province. In the period between 1999 and 2002, an area of 300 km2 around the Tissamaharama town were surveyed as a part of a project designed to research urban origins of Southern Sri Lanka. 128 hitherto unknown archaeological sites comprising a dense surface scattering of ancient potsherds have been discovered as a result of the survey. Eight locations among them were selected for excavation Present study is based on an assamblage of archaeological pottery obtained through excavations. This paper seeks to present the new typological classification, which derived from the analysis. The methodology of the new classification can be discussed under two headings i.e., the practical aspect interpretative approach of the analysis. The data derived from an ethnographic survey conducted in the lower Kirindi Oya basin was used assuming the probable vessel function and their technology. Identification of the shape of a vessel was considered as the major requirement for interpretation. The physical appearance of vessel including surface treatment and the design elaborated might have been inspired by the potter’s psyche and with number of other factors. This leads us to understand the significance of having a polythetic approach in typological classification considering both aspects of utilitarian and collective social psychology and their governing factors, of pottery manufacture in the past.
