Vitiligo is characterized by depigmentation of the skin, where circumscribed depigmented macules and patches can be seen. Vitiligo is a progressive disorder in which some or all of the melanocytes in the affected skin are selectively destroyed. Both internal applications and external applications have been prescribed in Ayurveda texts. Śāraṅgadara Saṃhitā and Sri Lankan Ayurveda pharmacopeia mentioned Śvitra lepa as treatment for Śvitra. It consists of Harithāla, Bākucī and Cow’s urine. The aim of the research was to assess the effect of Śvitra lepa in the management of Śvitra. For this clinical study, thirty patients were selected from Dermatology Clinic of Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Hospital. The selected patients were randomly assigned into two groups (Group A and B) consisting of fifteen patients for each. Two groups were given selected Ayurveda modality as a systemic therapy. Topical therapies were given separately; viz group A was treated with Śvitra lepa and group B was treated with Bākucī oil. The parameters of this research such as size of patches, number of patches, colour of affected area, itching condition and spot formation were examined in every 14 days for a period of three months. Patients of Group A showed reduction of vitiliginous patches in comparison to the same parameters such as size of patches, colour of affected area, Spot formation before treatment where it showed statistically significant difference. The patients of Group B showed significant difference only for spot formation on the vitiliginous patches. The study revealed that Śvitra lepa is effective in the management of Śvitra.Item Evaluation of the effect of herbal formula mentioned in Bhaisajya Rathnavali in the management of Pityriasis versicolor(Young Ayurveda Researchers' and Innovators' Symposium (YARIS – 2019), Institutional Research Committee, Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute, University of Kelaniya, Yakkala, Sri Lanka, 2019) Dissanayake, A.M.S.H.; Jayakody, J.A.D.P.P.Tinea versicolor is a frequent benign superficial fungal infection of the skin. It belongs to Malassezia related disease. Clinical features of Tinea versicolor include either hyperpigmented or hypopigmented finely scaly macules. The most frequently affected sites are the trunk, neck and proximal extremities. However, long term maintenances of treatment is often required due to its high recurrence rate. Tinea versicolar is generally asymptomatic although some patients experience mild pruritus. This study was designed to assess the effect and efficacy of an herbal formula cream including Saussurea lappa, Raphanus sativus, Brassica juncea, Curcuma longa, Mesua ferrea, Callicarpa macrophylla Vah and cow’s urine which was a safe and effective external therapy for Pityriasis versicolor. This study assessed on the distribution pattern in relation to age, gender, affected region, occupations and chronicity among Tinea versicolor patients. Also size, colour, clinical form and itching of the affected area were assessed and effect of the treatment was measured through a well-defined grading system in term of selected reliving parameters. Thirty patients participated in the study, who were randomly divided in to two groups as group A and B. Group A was given herbal formula cream and Group B was given Charmakathi lepa. Patients were advised to refrain from any other treatment for Tinea versicolar. Follow up period was four weeks. When considering the P values, test group P value for size, colour, itching and clinical form were < 0.05. In control group, P value < 0.05 for itching and P value > 0.05 for size and colour and clinical form. Therefore, it can be concluded that herbal formula cream is more effective than Charmakanthi lepa in the management of Tinea versicolarItem Role of three Ayurveda regimen in the management of scaling condition of Sidhma Kushta (Psoriasis).(Department of Shalya Shalakya,Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Institute,University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka, 2017) Jayakody, J.A.D.P.P.; Seneviratna, N.A.K.P.J.; Akarawita, J.K.W.Psoriasis, generally referred to as 'Potu Kabara' in Sri Lanka, corresponds with Sidhma Kushta in terms of a number of distinguished symptoms elaborated in Ayurveda classics. This study aimed at evaluating the efcacy of three Ayurveda regimen in the management of scaling condition of Sidhma Kushta. The study was carried out at the skin clinic of Gampaha Wickramarachchi Ayurveda Teaching Hospital, Yakkala, Sri Lanka. One hundred and ve patients were selected and randomly divided into three equal groups; A, B and C. All were given selected Ayurveda regimen as an internal mode of therapy while separate external applications viz. EA1 (Takradhara), EB2 (Takra Lepa) and EC3 (Raw herbals boil water) were given separately for each group for a period of three months. Healing effect was monitored by observing the clinical symptom of scaling. Data were collected by using PASI scale. Clinical outcomes were statistically analyzed using a non-parametric test, Wilcoxon Sign Rank Test and parametric tests such as ANOVA, Paired t-test, Pooled t-test. All the treatments given in three groups positively responded from the rst week for the symptom of scaling of the patient's head, upper limb, trunk and lower limb. (P-value 0.000 for each group). It can be concluded that all three treatments can be effectively used in the management of the symptom of scaling.
