    EXPLORING THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MENTAL HEALTH INITIATIVES AND ABSENTEEISM IN MANUFACTURING FIRMS IN COLOMBO DISTRICT, SRI LANKA

    Employee absenteeism remains a significant challenge in the Sri Lankan manufacturing sector, with mental health playing a crucial role in workforce stability and productivity. This study examines the relationship between mental health initiatives and absenteeism in manufacturing firms in the Colombo District. A quantitative research approach was adopted, utilizing structured questionnaires to collect data from 400 employees. The study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of mental health programs in reducing absenteeism and enhancing employee well-being. The findings indicate a positive correlation between mental health initiatives and reduced absenteeism, particularly among younger employees (18–25 years) and those with less than one year of job experience. Operational staff and supervisors exhibited higher absenteeism and stress levels compared to managerial employees, highlighting the need for targeted interventions. Family responsibilities and health challenges were identified as primary causes of absenteeism, while mental health programs had limited impact on addressing broader workplace stressors. Despite improving attendance, the effectiveness of these initiatives in reducing stress was constrained by systemic challenges such as heavy workloads and work-life imbalance. The study concludes that a holistic approach integrating tailored mental health initiatives, improved program accessibility, peer support networks, and flexible work arrangements is essential for minimizing absenteeism and fostering employee well-being. These findings contribute to the discourse on workplace mental health and offer actionable recommendations for improving workforce stability in the Sri Lankan manufacturing sector.

    Impact of Internal Communication on Employee Engagement: An Empirical Investigation of Operational Level Employees in the Apparel Industry

    Employee engagement is an important phenomenon in present human resource management concepts which emphasis that engaged employees in the organization are rather involved in their work effectively and efficiently. Most of the organizations today has identified importance of labor force when achieving their organizational goals. Therefore employee engagement is also an influential factor that an organization should concern since it has contiguous impact on employee turnover, absenteeism as well as productivity or outcome of employees. There are many constituents which influence engagement of employees out of which this research has focused on the relationship between internal communication and employee engagement since there has only been a of researches concentrated solely on the mentioned subjects in Sri Lankan context. Researcher has selected lower level employees involved in apparel industry as population for the research out of which researcher has taken 100 employees as sample. A questionnaire was distributed among them for the survey which enabled researcher to identify dimensions to measure internal communication and employee engagement while referring to the past written history and discussions with employees. Accordingly researcher has developed hypothesis such as there is a significant relationship between internal communication and employee engagement and there is a significant impact of internal communication on employee engagement. Researcher conducted correlation analysis, regression analysis and descriptive statistics in order to testing the hypothesis. There revealed that there were positive moderate statistically significant relationships with internal communication and employee engagement. Therefore both alternative hypothesis were accepted under 5% confidence level. In conclusion, it could be highlighted the importance of internal communication strategy to the organizations. Specially for engaging lower level employees in apparel industry.

    Impact of Work-Family Conflict on Employee Absenteeism: With Special Reference to Staff and Worker Level Employees at Noyon Lanka (Pvt) Ltd

    In the current context, employees face a conflicting situation with their continuing roles as caretakers of their homes, children and elderly parents, while fulfilling their job responsibilities. The greater responsibility at home makes a considerable pressure at their work place and vice versa. Thus the purpose of this study is to examine the impact of Work-Family Conflict on Employee Absenteeism of Staff and Worker level employee who are working in Noyon Lanka (Pvt) Ltd. This study was done using a sample of 50 staff and worker level employee and the data were collected using standard questionnaires for each variable. The study was done as a quantitative study using the survey method and as such analysis was conducted using quantitative data analysis techniques. It was found that the measurement scales met the acceptable standard level of validity and reliability. Correlation analysis and simple regression analysis were used to test the research hypothesis. Study confirmed that work family conflict significantly and positively correlated with Employee Absenteeism. Further, according to the results of the study, Work Family Conflict has explained 26% of variability of Employee Absenteeism. Therefore study concluded that there is a significant impact of work-family conflict on employee absenteeism.
