Abstract

There has been a significant transformation in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) knowledge-driven tools in higher education today. This study explores the impact of artificial intelligence tools on the critical thinking skills of undergraduate students in Sri Lanka. A quantitative approach is used to examine how AI-based tools, and in particular chatgpt and chatbots, affect students’ analytical decision-making and reasoning skills. Data was collected from undergraduate students to gain insight into this study via online survey instrument. This finding suggests that AI tools provide immediate feedback and improve access to information. However, AI tools hinder undergraduates' ability to think independently. This is due to their overreliance on AI technology. This study identifies the need to balance the use of AI-based tools. The goal should be to promote balance rather than relying entirely on AI. The limitations of this study include the development of AI use among undergraduates. It is recommended that educators and policymakers design curricula on how to effectively use AI tools while encouraging independent critical thinking.
