Clinical Evaluation of Medhyarasayana Ghrita along with Vachadi Ghrita Nasya (Pratimarsha) on Senile Dementia
(Indian Journal of Ancient Medicine and Yoga, 2010) Chaudhuri, K.; Samarakoon, S.M.S.; Chandola, H.M.; Kumar, R.; Ravishankar, B.
Mind and body are intimately associated with each other. The function of body organs depends on mental makeup of an individual and vice versa. Many factors such as stress, anxiety, depression, negative thoughts, unhealthy life style, unwholesome diet etc., influence mental and physical wellbeing. In senile Dementia progressive deterioration of memory, intellect, attention, thinking, comprehension and personality etc, is encountered during old age with preservation of normal level of consciousness. Medhyarasayana ghrita is a research based newly formulated medicine which contains sankhapushpi, mandukaparni, yastimadhu, guduchi, jyotishmati, kushmanda, ashwagandha, tulsi, bhallatak, kapikachchu and zinc processed with ghee. Vachadi ghrita in form of pratimarsha nasya was administered along with oral Medhyarasayana ghrita. Vachadi ghrita nasya contains vacha, kustha, pippali which also have rasayana property. On Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale, patients had anxiety, tension, depression, difficulty in concentration & memory and fear. On Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, these patients had anxiety, depression, hypochondriasis and hopelessness. On Brief Psychiatry Rating Scale, psychological factors affected include anxiety, depression, somatic concern and tension etc. Medhyarasayana ghrita along with vachadi ghrita improved clinical features in statistically highly significant (p<0.001) manner. The bio-marker serum cholinesterase showed statistically insignificant improvement. The data reflects that disturbed mental health plays an important role in etiopathogenesis of senile dementia.

Effect of Combination of Unequal Quantities of Ghee and Honey on Certain Parameters of Untimely Ageing
(Indian Journal of Ancient Medicine and Yoga, 2012) Samarakoon, S.M.S.; Herapathdeniya, S.K.M.K.; Chandola, H.M.
Rate of ageing is determined by one?s biological, social, life style and psychological conditions and adversity of which leads to accelerated form of ageing, which is termed as Akalaja jara in Ayurveda. The aim of this study was to evaluate combination of unequal quantity of ghee and honey on some selected subjective as well as objective parameters. Results showed that combination of ghee and honey improved certain symptoms of premature ageing including chief complaints, associated symptoms to a significant level. It improved symptoms related to increased vata, pitta and kapha (p<0.001) in highly significant manner. The improvement of rasa-kshaya and rasavaha sroto dushti is highly significant (p<0.001). Increase in HDL and decrease in triglycerides (17.03%), SGOT (11.66%) is highly significant (p<0.001). The DHEAS level increased (42.68%) only in female patients aged 30-40, but statistically insignificant (p>0.05). Having observed above results, it may be concluded that combination of ghee and honey has positive effect in improving certain subjective as well as objective parameters of premature ageing.

Evaluation of diet and life style in etiopathogenesis of Sandhivata Osteoarthritis
(Indian Journal of Ancient Medicine and Yoga, 2010) Gupta, P.K.; Samarakoon, S.M.S.; Chandola, H.M.
Mental, physical and social entities are inseparable and influence each other throughout the life. Many factors such as, anxiety, depression, unhealthy life style, unhygienic diet disturb mental and physical wellbeing. Anxiety, depression and social support are an important determinant of symptomatic and functional outcome. Providing social support can ameliorate symptoms and reassurance and patient?s education can bring about change in symptoms. Sandhigata-vata is described under vatavyadhi in all Ayurvedic texts.Dhatukshya is one of the main causes of vatavyadhi. This clinical condition is well comparable to osteoarthritis (O.A.), which is the second most common rheumatologic problem with prevalence of 22% to 39% in India. Demographic studies reveal that osteoarthritic changes commence between 4th- 5th decades of life. In present study, 56 patients fulfilling the diagnostic criteria of sandhigata-vata were subjected for the evaluation of dietary and life style related factors in the etiopathogenesis of the disease. It was observed that majority of patients followed viruddhaashana and vishamaashana food habits and had krura and madhyama koshtha. Females in the post menopausal age were observed in maximum and unwholesome diet, obesity, disturbed physical and mental health seemed to play an important role in etiopathogenesis of sandhivata (osteoarthritis).

Pharmacognosy and phytochemical study of Amalakayas Rasayana; an anti ageing Ayurvedic formulation
(Indian Journal of Ancient Medicine and Yoga, 2010) Samarakoon, S.M.S.; Chandola, H.M.; Shukla, V.J.
Pharmacognostical study revealed that the ingredients of Amalakayas Rasayana are authentic. Physicochemical parameters of AR are within the accepted range. The 30.6% w/w of total ash and acid insoluble ash 3.45% w/w may be due to its iron (Fe2 O3 ) content. AR contains 50% w/w water soluble extractives, which indicates that AR is easily soluble in water. AR gives 2 and 6 spots on short and long UV light respectively, which indicate that its chemical compounds are easily separable. AR contains 27.5% w/ w iron (Fe2 O3 ) indicating it?s a good source of iron. The total phenolic content was given satisfactory linearity against Gallic acid equivalents (R2 = 0.998). The DPPH (R2 =1 in polynomial plotting) assay showed good linearity against ascorbic acid indicating its free radical scavenging activity. EDTA & NBT assays showed sufficient linearity (R? = 0.976) against ascorbic acid indicating potent superoxide radical scavenging activity, whereas ferrous reducing power was also showed satisfactory linearity (R? = 0.986). Total tannin was estimated 2.82 % w/w. The extract was also showed ROS scavenging activities (R2 =0.976; EC50=77.5?g/ml). These pharmacognostical, physic-chemical and analytical parameters will help to establish further standards of Ayurvedic drugs to assure their safety, purity and efficacy.
