Item Usage of E - Resource for Academic Purposes among the University Temporary staff: special reference with faculty of social sciences, University of Kelaniya(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Sewwandi, H.K.I.; Jayawardana, M.C.N.; Wimalawansha, B.G.U.N.Electronic Resources have become a necessity in the modern information society. Today information and communication technology has given more opportunities for the information seekers, scholars and researchers. This new trend has changed expanded and added value to the library collections as well as has widened the scope of the library user communities. E Resource comes with various forms such as E- books, E-Journals, E-Databases etc. Through the electronic media temporary academic staff makes aware himself with the current information and updates. The study investigated the usage of E-resources by the Temporary staff. The objectives of the study were to examine how the university temporary staff search required information through the e-resources and how they use e-resources for their academic purposes. Structured questionnaires were distributed among all the temporary staff in the Faculty of Social Science, University of Kelaniya. Questionnaire was the main data gathering method. It was identified that from the total population only 74% use electronic media for their academic works. According to the results 40% percent of temporary staff uses e-books to search information, 15% percent use online databases and 19% Percent of students use e-Journals. 26% Percent of staff didn‘t appear to use electronic media for their academic purposes. Major Reason for this issue is staff used to go for the university library for search information without electronic concept. Other Problems were lack of awareness about electronic media, Connection problems Suggestions were made to conduct training sessions, workshops in order to awareness among stakeholders.Item Cloud Computing and its Applications in Library: A Review(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Raja, S.; Krishnan, V.Cloud computing have not been a new technology that suddenly appeared on the web but it is a new form of computing. Cloud computing is a kind of computing technology which facilitates in sharing the resources and services over the internet rather than having these services and resources on local servers/ nodes or personal devices. Cloud computing is a kind of computing technology which facilitates in sharing the resources and services over the internet rather than having these services and resources on local servers/ nodes or personal devices. The combination of servers, networks, connection, applications and resources is defined as 'cloud'. Application of cloud computing user would be able to browse a physical shelf of books, CDs or DVDs or choose to take out an item or scan a bar code into his mobile device. All historical and rare documents would be scanned into a comprehensive, easily searchable database and would be accessible to any researcher. Many libraries already have online catalogues and share bibliographic data with OCLC. More frequent online catalogues are linked to consortium that share resources. The combination of servers, networks, connection, applications and resources is defined as 'cloud'. This article describes models of Cloud computing, applications in library, advantages, disadvantages of cloud computing in library and its barriers.Item Professional Development of Library and Information Science (LIS) Professionals in Annamalai University: A Study(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Natarajan, N.O.This Paperthrows lightonthe professional development opportunities of library professionals (LIS) in the Annamalai Universities, Tamil Nadu, and India. The aim of the study is to evaluate the professional development activities of Library professionals and their attitude towards continuing education programmes. In order to achieve the objectives of the study a survey was conducted with the help of structured questionnaires distributed to 125 library professionals in Annamalai university, Tamil Nadu, India of which 100 questionnaires were returned. Results of the analysis show that majority of the professionals have pursued higher degrees in library science courses after entering the profession, and that they have a positive attitude towards participation in training programmes and workshops. The results show that developments in ICT have a positive influence on majority of library professionals‘ attitude towards continuing education programmes.Item Green and Energy Efficiency in Library(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Kanagavel, P.; Sridhar, K.; Gomathinayagam, S.The way the world has used global natural resources in the past has placed a tremendous strain on the environment – depleting our natural resources, polluting the environment, warming the earth, raising sea levels, and endangering our biodiversity. Climate change has become the inevitable result of our past actions. According to a report published in India, cities consume two thirds of global energy use and 76% of the world’s energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) are also emitted by cities through transport, industry, and building and construction related activities. Sustainable development has always been a key consideration for the development of India. Growing and developing our city state in an efficient, clean and green way by utilizing less resources; generating less waste; reducing pollution to the environment. In response to broad concerns regarding the environment and climate change, Green Library are becoming much more common and are increasingly in demand by Libraries. The online Dictionary of Library and Information Science defines Green Libraries as: A Library designed to minimize negative impact on the natural environment and maximize indoor environment quality by means of careful site selection, use of natural construction materials and biodegradable products, conservation of resources (water, energy, paper, responsible waste, disposal, Recycling etc). In new constructing and library renovation, sustainability is increasingly achieved through LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environment Design) certification a Rating system developed and administered by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). A Green Library also knows as a Sustainable Library, is a library build with environmental concerns in mind, Green libraries are a part of the larger green building movement. The main aim of this article to identify and create awareness about the reduction of energy consumption and energy cost in the Libraries. The green and energy saving design of library consists of the following parts: integrating energy management system in monitoring and control systems, complex vacuum glazing of building envelope, energy saving illuminating system, convertible frequency air-conditioner of HVAC and rainwater utilization system. In recent years, building energy consumption increased fast in India, especially the public buildings.Based on this research, some possible actions can be suggested for improving Library activities and output indicators towards mitigating the Climate Change and Global Warming.Item Uses of Social Media and Library among MBA Students in Prims, Periyar University, Salem(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Jayaprakash, M.; Murugan, C.This study examined the use of Social Media and Library for research support and it is guided by three objectives namely: a) to ascertain the uses social media in academic institutions; b) to identify the challenges associated with social media use for research purposes and c) to provide experiences of social media application in selected MBA students in Periyar Institute of Management Studies, Periyar University, Salem. The accelerated growth of the Internet has stimulated research into the use of social media for study makes use of library in combination with personal and professional work experiences on the use of social media from MBA students in PRIMS, Periyar University. Research experiences by the students showed that it is only Department and main Library that uses social media in its library, which is as a result of a formal social media strategy. They use it mostly for communication and interaction with colleagues. It was also discovered that there is no social media strategy available in department and main university libraries. Based on these findings, the study recommended the implementation of social media strategy. Social Media is a new technology offering new options for MBA students in their research support role. This study was conducted 222 samples. This study draw the random sampling i.e Female 105 and Male 117 who were administered a student perception questionnaire on how social media support on students. A research questionnaire was designed to determine the factors of social networking websites that have impact on students. Variables identified are age, gender, education, social influence and academic performance. This study determines that most of students use social media and library due to their friends and its total average is 67.3% of total sample.Item Impact of the Library Management System on Academic Activities of Undergraduate Students of the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Gunawardena, D.N.T.Library is a main sub portion in any university and Library Management System is considered as a strategic resource to provide an effective service. Library Management Systems are implementing on different purposes in university libraries to achieve their academic goals. Two questions were examined in this study; what was the impact of Library Management System on academic activities of undergraduate students, and was there a significant gap between expected service level and perceived service level of Library Management Systemin a Library. Case study method used on the University of Moratuwa Library Sri Lanka. T- Test, Lickert Scale and Content Analysis used to analyze the data. According to the results of hypothesis testing, the Infrastructure Facilities have been affected to service quality of Library Management System. Majority have mentioned that Infrastructure Facilities were satisfactory and they have sufficient knowledge to manage activities of theLibrary Management System. It is significant to know whether students’ feedback is important to take decisions when developing the Library Management System. It is need to confirm whether they ready to give their comments for further developments and whether they think their opinions have animpression to give positive impact towards of improving Library Management System. Majority of students are in the view of ‘Their feedback is important to improve the service quality of Library Management System’. There are several sub processes of Library Management System. Online registration has become to first place in the priority order in Library Management System. User account management, Library Services and academic, administrative woks have taken other places.All most all students have mentioned that they have gained a hundred percent positive impact on academic activities using on Library Management System.
