As per the preliminary study, the most popular reading source is the religious books. They spent an average of one to two hours a day for reading and are mostly interested in reading in their leisure. A similar number of students have a likeness towards the use of internet. Even though the majority has an interest in reading and acquiring knowledge, one of the major difficulties faced when reading is the drowsiness and the weariness. But they are still interested in keeping a private collection of books. Many students interested to read books as a conventional source however due their meager acquaintance of modern e-resources, acute trust on conventional source like books prompted reading rather using modern e-resources. Therefore, they have to be trained and more awareness programs on the use of e-resources.

The Impact of Social Media on the Reading Habit of the Youth
(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Kulathunga Arachchi, M.S.
In the recent decades the Social Media plays a pivotal role in the mass communication. A vast majority of Social Media users are youth. Thus most of the positive and negative impacts of Social Media usage fall on the youth. The amount of time allocated for internet usage of the youth has increased dramatically with the increase of latest Social Media networks and as a result the reading habit of the youth seems to be dramatically decreasing. This research intends to examine how the Social Media has influenced the reading habits of the youth. It is conducted through questionnaires and the interviews and thereafter the collected information is analyzed systematically to find the final result. It further investigates the negative impact of the youth by the social media on their reading habit. Reading is capable of enriching one’s intellectual capabilities and it develops insights into human problems and has a major impact on their attitudes towards society. Social media which is designed with the intention of promoting social connection seems to be not fulfilling its main objective by reducing the reading habit of the youth. Moreover the usage of modern abbreviations to communicate on the social media hinders the proper language acquisition and development which affect their basic language skills such as speaking, writing and reading comprehension. Owing to the rapid change or the update of content on social media sites the youth is not given a reasonable time to cultivate one particular thought and think about it analytically which again makes a negative impact on their intellectual and profound thinking habit which is an essential quality for a good personality which is mastered by reading books.

Drawing 20% of the total number of students 218 wereselected for the study. 203 completed questionnaires were received. The study revealed that integration of technology into the lives of students has widely affected their mode of reading. Availability of smart phones and laptops among 78% of the undergraduates tend them to spend more time online. Majority of the undergraduates indicated that they were not able cope with the screen-based reading. 65% of the students indicated that they are in favor of reading printed academic materials in print form. Students use new technological devices for light reading, while printed materials are used for serious in-depth reading. The study demonstrated that the wide availability of new technological devices prevents students spending more time in reading printed materials. Similarly, the study implicitly found that undergraduates do not read online journals/articles, due to the factors such as lengthiness, problems associated with the access, and they are of the opinion that those materials are too serious. Outcomes of the study implies that urgent measures should be taken by both teaching staff and librarians to promote health reading habits among undergraduates those who read less but spend more time online.
