Item Exploration of How Appearance Management is Used to Improve the Self Esteem by Urban Silver Aged Women in Sri Lanka(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya., 2021) Malkanthie M.A.A.; Kelum W.G.S.From 1981 to 2012, within 31 years, the Sri Lankan elderly population has doubled. It is estimated that one in four Sri Lankans will be elderly by the year 2041. One of the mistakes done by marketers is neglecting this group by thinking that they have low income and spend less money. Even though they have less income, they are not in poverty compared to the population under age 34. Silver aged population (age 50+) experience physical and mental changes during this period due to body postures, wrinkles, and changes in hair color and skin tones. Despite the bodily changes associated with aging, previous studies reported that the importance of appearance did not decrease with age, and appearance was more important for women than for men. It is the nature of humans that want to appear as young and beautiful as possible regardless of age. Hence the purpose of this research is to explore how appearance management is used to improve the self-esteem in old age. This research adopted the inductive approach since this research is trying to understand the hidden behaviors and psychological matters of women who are passing the silver age. The population of this study was considered as urban women, over fifty years of age in Sri Lanka and the individual level was used since the researcher asked questions from women individually to discover their behavior. Clothing is a visual representation of the self, women use articles of dress to construct and maintain their appearance, cognitively coherent with groups. Individuals manage appearance to represent their image. Fashion is closely linked to the emotional well-being of women. The women in this research used fashion as both social and symbolic capital to classify themselves concerning perceived social categories such as friends, peers, and their projected future self.Item Impact of Children’s Emotional Influencing Strategies on Parental Purchasing Decision on Children’s Food(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya., 2021) Dibie, V.M.The study focused on impact of children’s emotional influencing strategies on parental purchasing decision on children’s food. The justification for the study was that it examined how emotional strategies help children to influence parental purchasing decision on children’s food. The specific objective of the study was to examine the extent which children’s emotional influencing strategies affect parents in purchasing food for their children. Survey research design was used. Out of the 400 respondents, 386(97%) were considered valid and used. Simple percentage was used to analyze responses to structured questionnaire items. Multiple regression technique was used to test hypothesis. Results indicated that children’s emotional influencing strategies have a significant effect on parental purchasing decision on children’s food. A major recommendation was that manufacturers and marketers of children’s food products should constantly study children’s emotional behavior with a view to designing food products and communication campaign capable of meeting children’s needs.Item Determinants of Access to Finance among Manufacturing Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in Nigeria(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya., 2021) Bello, O.F.; Mustapha, Y.I.This study investigates the determinants of access to finance among manufacturing micro, small and medium enterprises in Nigeria (MSMEs). This study uses the Nigeria enterprise survey dataset conducted by the World Bank between April, 2014 and February, 2015. A robust logistic regression model has been applied for a sample of 507 manufacturing MSMEs in Nigeria to achieve this study's objective. The results indicate that access to finance is largely influenced by owner/managers' experience and owner/managers’ skills. By implication, owners’/managers’ experience and skills are the driving force for manufacturing MSMEs' probability of having access to finance in Nigeria. Therefore, this study recommends that owners/managers of MSMEs in Nigeria should leverage their stock of experience and innate skills to enhance their firms’ access to finance.Item Impact of Financial Management Practices on Performance of Small and Medium Enterprises – Legitimacy Theory Perspectives(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya., 2021) Tharmini T.; Lakshan A.M.I.The study aims to find out the impact of financial management practices (FMPs) on performance of Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Sri Lanka from the lens of the Legitimacy Theory. Primary data was collected from the SME owners/managers. Self-administered questionnaires were issued to collect data. The sample was selected through stratified simple random sampling method from the registered SMEs. Data were analyzed and evaluated by using Descriptive Statistics, Independent sample t-test, Correlation analysis and regression analysis. The results revealed that Accounting Information System, Financial reporting and analysis has moderate level adoption, Working capital management has high level adoption and Financial planning and control has low level of adoption in SMEs. Further, Financial reporting and analysis and Working capital management is significantly impact on the performance of SMEs. Accounting Information system and financial planning and control is not significantly impact on performance of SMEs. The findings revealed that there is a significant difference in the application of FMPs among small sized enterprises and medium sized enterprises. FMPs are highly applied by medium sized enterprises than small sized enterprises. The study also found out that lack of accounting knowledge and cost of hiring professional accountants are the major challenges faced by SMEs to adopt the FMPs. Eventually, this study recommends to SME owners to adopt FMPs (at a higher level) and government and other regulatory bodies to create suitable policies and standards to mitigate the challenges. SMEs practice important FMPs to obtain the society's impression as social responsible organizations (in terms of legitimacy within ‘social contract’). Accordingly, application of FMPs aims to legitimise company behaviour by ensuring the profitability, survival and growth to influence the society’s perceptions about the SMEs by way of higher number of employments, use of domestic raw materials and payment of taxes. This study contributes to the theory by bringing in SMEs perspectives in to the Legitimacy theory. Further, it contributes to practice and literature by carrying new insights on the impact of FMPs on performance of SMEs in the Sri Lankan context.Item Board Effectiveness, Entrepreneurial Orientation and Corporate Culture: Evidence from an Emerging Economy(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya., 2021) Deshani A.L.; Ajward A.R.There is a dearth and mixed empirical evidence regarding the relationship between corporate board effectiveness and entrepreneurial orientation in a large-scale organizational setting. The purpose of this paper is to address this deficiency by investigating the link between board effectiveness and entrepreneurial orientation including the possible moderators that influence such a connection in an emerging country context. A quantitative survey was conducted representing the top 100 listed non-financial companies in Sri Lanka. Correlation and hierarchical regression analysis were employed in testing the hypotheses of the study. Study findings indicated that entrepreneurial orientation is significantly associated and predicted by board effectiveness in Sri Lankan context. The relationship between board effectiveness and firm innovative behavior is significantly moderated by the corporate cultural characteristics measured via competing value framework. The study is noteworthy due to, (1) the adoption of a multi-theoretic perspective to conceptualize board effectiveness, (2) an attempt to link resource-dependency theory and the resource-based view of entrepreneurship to understand the aforementioned link between board effectiveness and entrepreneurial orientation, (3) an attempt to understand the role of corporate culture to strengthen the aforementioned link. The study has a momentous value for theoretical advancement in corporate governance and entrepreneurship literature. The study findings provide a notable practical value for board members, senior decision-makers, and policymakers in emerging countries.Item Can Service Learning enhance Graduate Capital? Evidence from Sri Lankan State Universities(Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies, University of Kelaniya., 2021) Wijayanama C.; Ranjani R.P.C.; Mohan D.U.Employability of graduates has been a topic of high interest among graduates, academics, employers and economists alike for decades. Researchers argue that the responsibility of preparing graduates for their first job roles, has not been adequately owned by the universities nor the employers. The graduates themselves, give less attention to the issue and usually ill prepared for their first job roles. Service Learning (SL) is a futuristic andragogical strategy that changes the receiver and the giver of the service. In this study, the researcher examines how SL can be adopted as an enhancer of employability potential for graduates. Since the SL is new to the academic world in general and also to the Sri Lankan education system, this inductive study adopted the Grounded Case Study method using theoretical sampling to study the influence of SL as a strategy for enhancing graduate employability potential – Graduate Capital (GC) in state universities of Sri Lanka. The findings of the study include the features of SL practiced in Sri Lanka, GC attributes and the extent of enhancements of GC attributes due to partaking in SL program. The current study concludes that SL provides overall improvement to GC attributes.
