    Information Seeking Activities of Undergraduates in Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies: a Study based on University of Kelaniya

    In 21st century, information has become a living thing and essential factor for the growth and development of a society. In any sector, people are searching information for achieve various purposes. Information-seeking behavior contains with the searching, locating, retrieving, and using of information. This study examines the information needs and information seeking behavior of faculty of commerce and management studies undergraduates in University of Kelaniya. The purposes of the study are, identifying the information seeking patterns of undergraduate students of faculty of commerce and management studies, explore the problems that undergraduate facing when accessing to the required information and identify practicable techniques for effective information seeking behavior. The study adapted a survey method and 2016/2017 academic year undergraduate students of faculty of commerce and management studies in University of Kelaniya were used as the sample. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to collect data. Selected simple random sampling method was used as the data collecting technique and SPSS software was used for the data analysis. According to the study most of undergraduates used the library for assignment purpose, research work and note making. Majority of the users are preferred to use resources available on both of electronic and printed materials. The findings revealed that lack of knowledge regarding e-resources in the library, insufficient of user awareness regarding available management resources in the library and need of advance training for undergraduates for using OPAC. The study suggests, all of library services and strategic should be re-designed and aim for improving toward information needs and information seeking behavior, for racing student’s awareness and usage. As well as library should give best practice and knowledge about searching strategy by organizing workshops, printing leaflets etc

    Information Needs and Information Seeking Behavior of LIS Diploma Students of Sri Lanka Library Association – Badulla Centre

    In the existing day society, there is a high demand and urgent need for access and availability of information. Information is a most important component of human life. The development and growth of an individual or a society is estimates by their level of information capacity. According to that this study mainly aimed to achieve to explore information needs and information seeking behavior of the students, who are following Diploma in Library and Information Science at Sri Lanka Library Association, Badulla Centre which is coordinating by Uva Provincial Library Service Board (UPLSB), Badulla, To identify the satisfaction level of the distance between the students’ needs and the services of UPLSB and also to discover the particular students’ problem while they are using library. This study directed by a survey method to collect data. Selected simple random sampling technique was used through self-administered questionnaire and SPSS software was used for analysis. Fifty questionnaires were distributed and forty five of them responded. End of the survey this study discovered the student’s information needs for making notes, gathering notes for assignments, to refer the recommended readings, the students’ information seeking behavior based on printed materials especially related books, the study identified the students’ satisfaction level between needs and available services is medium and also the study exposed lack of study materials and insufficient materials by medium wise especially for Tamil medium, not enough computer- internet facility to the users were the problems which are students faced. Then study suggests that, to increase the students’ satisfaction level by extend the services of UPLSB through understand their needs and wants and aware the students to develop their behavior to use other information sources, available library materials and services, library orientation programs, library should give the computer- internet facility for the users

    Information Needs and Information Seeking Behavior of Agriculture Scientist of the Department of Agriculture in Sri Lanka.

    Information seeking patterns are consisted to be different among usergroups.This study examines the issues of information needs and seeking patterns of the user group of Agriculture scientist of the department of Agriculture in Sri Lanka.The specific objectives of the study first,to identify the information seeking patterns of the Agriculture scientists. Second, to find out what are the resources they need to use. Third, to find out satisfaction level of the agricultural scientists with the available information of their libraries and suggest the possible solutions to overcome the problems faced/encounter when accessing the required information by the agricultural scientists.A survey was conducted by using structured questionnaire among the all agricultural scientist of the two research institutes of the Agriculture Department.The findings revealed that Agriculture scientist in the category of very weaker competence in relation to use of library and also spend less time in the library of their institutes. Most of the respondents are seek information for their research work. It has reveled that respondents are preferred to used journals when find the information for their research work. The paper conclude that scientist are required proper instruction and programs aiming at improving their information seeking skills. They are facing lot of barriers when used the library in their institutions. It is recommended to librarians that the existing strategies should be re design and re shape to address these problems properly and to improve the information searching skills of agriculture scientist of the department of Agriculture.Also more IT and other facilities should be implemented to the Agriculture Libraries.

    The Information and Information Seeking Behavior of Sri Lanka Administrative Service Cadet Officers: A Study Based on Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration.

    The Library of the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration (SLIDA) plays a leading role in catering to diversified information needs of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service Cadet Officers (SLASCOs) who are undergoing their induction training in SLIDA. The principal purpose of this study is to ascertain the service quality in the progress of the information needs of Sri Lanka Administrative Service Cadet Officers undergoing their induction training in SLIDA. The other objectives are to identify what sources they use, and how, when, where they locate information and finally the user satisfaction of the library services provided by the SLIDA Library. Survey by administering a pre-prepared questionnaire was the principal research methods and the population was the Sri Lanka Administrative Service Cadet Officers of 2017 batch. Sample was 60 SLASCOs to whom the questionnaire was given and interviews were held for collecting primary data. The principal information needs of SLASCOs were related to their occupation, study and research. They were adequately satisfied with the Library and the availability of its information services. Data revealed that the SLASCOs used a variety of resources and employed several information seeking patterns to fulfil their information require to write their assignments. Of the huge repository of information source in the library the SLASCOs,they used only a limited information sources related to their information needs, related to the training at SLIDA. Only a very small group of people uses books to obtain additional knowledge for leisure. The library can provide sufficient facilities, as well as provide e-library services, they can locate information through automate library services, as well as if it is better to use in the library books for distribution in the library books. The results show that development of a user-friendly Library Service is a prime requirement for SLASCOs and more information sources needed for them have to be acquired. This will facilitate to maintain of a more productive and useful library service in the future and would lay the foundations for the creation of an international library.

    The Information Needs and Information Seeking Behavior of Rural Communities: A Study Based on Kannaththota Village

    Developed countries acutely need knowledge and information for the development as well as the development countries. If knowledge and information is not adequately available at people’s hand, it will be a great obstacle for the same people as well as achieving developmental goals. Therefore information need has seen a top most essential need in the context of human needs. Within this context, the main objective of the study is to explore the information needs and seeking behavior of rural communities. Other objectives are to identify how fulfil their information needs, to examine the sources they apply for it, to identify whether new media used for, and to study the problems they face in fulfilling’s their information needs. Survey research method used for the study. Population was the rural communities in five selected villages in kannaththota region. Sample was 100 villagers from there five villages. It revealed that majority use television for getting information. They use it for getting daily news items. The library as a medium of getting information is very low. Female category prefer house hold information like cookery, dress making and clothing. Community living near road side was more used in reading newspaper than the interior villagers. Many people did not use modern media for getting information. Rural communities preferred to update their information. Government must pay more attention to improve the information provision of the public. It is much better to introduce more awareness programs and activities on the subject. The use of modern ICT for getting information should be make available as soon as possible.
