Item A survey on the library usage of University undergraduates: A study based on University of Kelaniya(4th National Research Conference on Applied Social Statistics, Social Statistics Students’ Association, Department of Social Statistics, Faculty of Social Science, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2018) Omeega Hansini, S.G.L.A library is a store of knowledge. As the mankind, knowledge is an essential thing to all of us. An undergraduate is a seeker who dives the knowledge-sea. Using library is a part of seeking knowledge to their activities. Therefore, the objective of this survey was, identifying the library usage of university undergraduates. 80 undergraduates were selected from 4 faculties including both male and female by using stratified sampling method. The data were obtained by using a questionnaire. Collected data was analyzed by using the SPSS software. According to the analyzed data, there was 53.75% who use the library according to their needs only. And 18.75% use once a week, 15% use daily and 12.5% use once a month. According to the data, number of books have borrowed last semester, there were 35% undergraduates who had borrowed 10-20 books. And 33.75% had borrowed less than 10 books. 25% had borrowed more than 20 books. And 6.25% undergraduates hadn’t borrowed books. According to the primary data the reason for decreasing library usage is the usage of other sources of knowledge. The internet usage was in 34%. And 20% had used internet, newspapers and mass media. According to the satis faction level, strongly happy level of lending section was in 12.5%, reference section was in 8.8%, articles section was in 3.8%, research section was in 1.3%. In thesis collection and others sections anyone were not in strongly happy level. If the sections of library are well organized and comprehensive, it will help to increase the percentage of undergraduates who use the library for their activitiesItem Study Based on the communication skill of students in the use of University library facilities(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Aththanayaka, A.M.M.C.; Madhusanka, Amila; Madushanka, AyeshToday, many university library in Sri Lanka have been able to provide Knowledge and information to student with the support of Modern Information Communication Technology applications up to certain extend. Among those facilities internet services, E- library initiatives, modern database services, E- Journal, E-book services, social networking facilities are few to be mentioned. Principle purpose of this paper was to investigate the knowledge, understanding of the students on these service and to explore their communication skill in using these services. Survey method of research applied and the population of the study was total number of students in University of Kelaniya and the sample selected hundred students from four faculties being the research framed to a case study design. Study revealed that the students possess with adequate communication skill in the use of library facilities however the main draw sack they face that the did not have adequate knowledge and understanding about the modern ICT based information services provided by the University library. This is a serious knowledge and aptitude gap prevailed among them and therefore move awareness programs, training sessions, particularly workshop based on modern library facilities are to be launched by the library.Item Variation of Anxieties among the Arts Undergraduates in Using the Library of University of Peradeniya(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Alahakoon, C.N.K.The study aims to find out the levels of anxieties relating to find information in the library among the Arts undergraduates in the University of Peradeniya. A survey research method wasappliedand 10% from 2nd – 4th year undergraduates in the Faculty of Arts of University of Peradeniya was selected. The sample was 208 and data was collected in July to September, 2015 by using a close ended questionnaire. Statistical Package for Social Sciences was used to analyses the data and mean was used to interpret the results of the study. The analysis indicated that all surveyed students are in moderate level of use of information resources in the library. Relating to the difficulties having with use of information resources, third and final years have indicated 38.22 and 38.08 mean level respectively but it is less than the 2nd years mean level. About the use of computer and the internet indicated that 2nd year undergraduates have 30.3 mean level and other are less than that. The difficulties having with library was also measured and it was indicated that all the students who are in the three studying years are in moderate level of anxiety. Out of 55 maximum level, these were indicated 33 mean level. Anxiety regarding the searching for information, second and third years was bit high than the fourth year students and out of 35 maximum level, these two years are in 20.27 and 20.37 respectively. The significant indication was that all these three years are in moderate level for technical barriers (17.99). With regard to topic identification, the second years indicated bit high value than 3rd and 4th years that is 13.25. In conclusion it can be stated that although there is a library orientation program for students, they are still having moderate level of difficulties in using library and when seeking information inside the library. Therefore, library services, awareness, hands on exposures should be increased to minimize their anxiety level in all sort of information seeking and it will increase the use of all kind of information resources in the library.Item The Influence of Salary and other Benefits on Job Satisfaction among University Library Assistants in Sri Lanka(Research Centre for Social Sciences, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Punyawardena, W.Job satisfaction is one of the prime concerns of modern day employee welfare. Job satisfaction can be influenced by a variety of factors such as appreciation, communication, co-workers, fringe benefits, job conditions, nature of work, organization, personal growth, policies and procedures, promotion opportunities, recognition, security, and supervision. This study analyses the influence of salary and other benefits on job satisfaction among University Library Assistants in Sri Lanka. A questionnaire was developed to measure seven components of job satisfaction; i.e. salary, overtime earnings, loan facilities, welfare, accommodation, foreign leave and career development; and posted among Sri Lankan University system. The study population being the finite sample was 280 Library Assistants attached to the libraries of 13 National Universities. Two hundred and eight individuals responded out of 280 Library Assistants. The results indicated major difference of satisfaction through seven parameters. Out of the seven parameters, only the salary has become a strong facet that contributes to overall job satisfaction. It was found that 125 respondents (60%) were satisfied and 68 (33%) were averagely satisfied regarding the salary. Satisfaction on overtime earning, loan facilities, welfare, accommodation, foreign leave and career development facilities of respondents were 43%, 32%, 18%, 12%, 12% and 16% respectively. Further the study reveals that the overall job satisfaction was better towards the salary and the satisfaction of library assistants was negative towards the overtime earnings, loan facilities, welfare, accommodation, foreign leave and financial access for career development of University Libraries. The finding of the study will be helpful for the university authorities and librarians for the quality development of the effective service of Library Assistants of University Libraries.
