    Information Seeking Activities of Undergraduates in Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies: a Study based on University of Kelaniya

    In 21st century, information has become a living thing and essential factor for the growth and development of a society. In any sector, people are searching information for achieve various purposes. Information-seeking behavior contains with the searching, locating, retrieving, and using of information. This study examines the information needs and information seeking behavior of faculty of commerce and management studies undergraduates in University of Kelaniya. The purposes of the study are, identifying the information seeking patterns of undergraduate students of faculty of commerce and management studies, explore the problems that undergraduate facing when accessing to the required information and identify practicable techniques for effective information seeking behavior. The study adapted a survey method and 2016/2017 academic year undergraduate students of faculty of commerce and management studies in University of Kelaniya were used as the sample. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to collect data. Selected simple random sampling method was used as the data collecting technique and SPSS software was used for the data analysis. According to the study most of undergraduates used the library for assignment purpose, research work and note making. Majority of the users are preferred to use resources available on both of electronic and printed materials. The findings revealed that lack of knowledge regarding e-resources in the library, insufficient of user awareness regarding available management resources in the library and need of advance training for undergraduates for using OPAC. The study suggests, all of library services and strategic should be re-designed and aim for improving toward information needs and information seeking behavior, for racing student’s awareness and usage. As well as library should give best practice and knowledge about searching strategy by organizing workshops, printing leaflets etc

    A study of the Literacy Rate of Rural Secondary School Children (Rambewa Educational Division in the Anuradhapura District).

    Rural development and urban development plays a crucial role in the development of a country knowledge for the children in a Country. The School is the place that provides knowledge for the children in a country. The primary objective of the school is to make a knowledgeable society to the country. The information literacy can be given as one important concept for this. Accordingly, skill on information literacy for exploring information for student’s academic purposes and other purpose is timely needed. Therefore, the level of information literacy on rural school are less than urban schools in present context. The purpose of this study is to explore the literacy skills of the secondary school children and to identify the reasons for their lack of knowledge in information literacy. The sample was obtained from a random sample from 10 secondary schools in grade 10 to grade 11 in the Rambewa educational division in the Anuradhapura district. The random sampling method was used. A questionnaire was designed and collected the data using this tool. The study demonstrated that children’s literacy rate in rural areas are comparatively low in terms of literacy rate in schoolchildren of urban areas. The main reason for this was the scarcity of resources. Such as lack of library facilities and lack of knowledge on information, literacy of both teachers and students also found through the study.

    Information Needs and Information Seeking Behavior of Geo Scientist in Sri Lanka

    Information need has become foremost among human needs. Due to this significance of information, it has become a necessity to the officials in the field of Library Information Science, to have a better understanding about the information needs of their clientele. The main objective of this research is to identify the information need and information seeking behavior patterns of geo scientists of Sri Lanka. This research was conducted following the judgmental sampling method, with the participation of 128 members of the Geological Association of Sri Lanka. Information was collected by means of questionnaires and observations. The level of response received for the questionnaires was at 46.9% and the responses were subjected to a statistical analysis by SPSS PC 2010. The behavioral patterns of the geologist were identified through Classification and Regression Trees Analysis (CART) based on different variables while comparing the scientific information obtained from the targeted group. The research revealed that geologists have a special tendency in depending on electronic sources to extract the information and the use of scientific periodicals, seminars and workshops. It clearly showed a very low usage of libraries to get access to information. According to the outcomes of this research, geologists were facing difficulties when they are seeking information due to following reasons, such as incomplete information, information not being updated properly, lack of high speed internet facilities, higher rates charged for online access and inability to browse information etc. These factor had an adverse effect on their research articles and its impact was detected clearly through the analysis as well. According to the above findings, geologists are not satisfied with the services provided by the libraries and information resource centers. Therefore, the officers who provide information should be prepared and well equipped with necessary information in order to provide a qualitative service to the core readership in the future without a delay.

    Students' attitudes and perceptions on library user education programmes: A case study

    This study examined the effectiveness of various types of user education programmes offered by Library University of Moratuwa. Four user education programmes were considered in this study, 'Library Orientation and Tour', 'Information for Research', Research and Plagiarism' and 'How to do Referencing'. Attitudes and the perception of the students towards these user education programmes were discussed in this study. A user survey was adopted and the undergraduate students and post graduate students who have participated in library user education programmes during 2014-2015 was the target group. Results of the study discovered that 88% of the students have gained the knowledge on library resources and services through the library user education programmes. Most importantly, 91.3% of students have stated that they were equipped with good research skills by participating in these library user education programmes. Results of this study encourage the library to continue the user education programmes to keep building research skills of the students while making necessary adjustments to fulfill the needs of modern library users.
