    Quality Assured Innovative and Best Practices in Library and Information Services

    Quality assurance in library and information services is a conscious and planned activity to create competition among the libraries, customer satisfaction by maintaining some international standards and bench marks through accountability. This further improves employee’s morale and satisfaction which in turn bring credibility, prestige, status, image and visibility of the institution nationally and internationally. Quality in library and information services can only be assured through innovative services and best practices to meet the changing information needs of the customers. Libraries of all categories were used to cater traditional library and information services like bibliographic, database, literature search, documentation, CAS, SDI, translation, reprographic etc. Besides libraries adopted some best practices as extension services like organising book exhibitions, essay and quiz completion to promote reading habits, best library user award, best library worker award, orientation programme. Advances in information and communication technology, changing information scenario and its application in library and information activities have compelled the library and information professionals to revamp and reorient the existing library and information services and professionals. Dramatic developments in the library and information activities have taken place due to the emergence of knowledge society, library resource sharing networks, digital library, content development and content management. Institutional repository, RFID, Web learning, MOOC, information/digital literacy and web based library services like social networking so as to supplement global reforms in education system as value added library services. Impact of information and communication technology have further compelled to develop the information management skills of the library and information professionals in the areas of Library Automation, Networking, Design and Development of Information System, Networking, Internet, Digitization, Content Development, Managing and Organizing Information Resources and Services, Applying Information Tools and Technologies and more importantly web based library and information services (Library Web 2.0) including social networking. The present paper shall discuss in detail the above mentioned quality assured, innovative and best practices in both traditional and networked environment for a sustainable development of library and information services that a knowledge society demands.

    Scholarly Information Input for Quality Research: Initiatives of India

    Higher education in India witnessed tremendous growth after independence with systematic reforms. The success of any organisation lies with quality information and it is treated as most important and valuable asset. Quality assurance and development plays central role in strategic planning in Higher education. The major reason for more information is development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), which has made easy to publish and retrieve the documents over the web. There is no much control mechanism to check the relevance of information published over the web has lead to publish more documents, in which relevance of majority of the information is questionable. But, something is better than nothing and there is still some relevant, accurate, timely, updated information is available over the web. Publication of quality research may take more time, but the final output of the results will be useful to the society. On the other hand, more number of low quality publication will work against the system which will hamper the funding and attracting good students community. Quality information is the information, which is perceived and used by the customer. It has certain attributes such as accuracy, relevancy, free from bias, currency, trustworthy, and so on. In order to ensure the quality in research, the University Grants Commission (UGC), New Delhi, India has taken some of the measures to be implemented in the Indian University System. This paper discusses about various attributes involved in quality information, its impact on quality research and some of the strategies taken by the UGC for ensuring the quality in higher education research.

    Quality Assurance and Quality Enhancement in Higher Academic Libraries: An Indian Perspective

    Quality is a process of continuous improvements and developments which focuses on small details, that leads to satisfaction of the end user over the products and services. Quality is defining element of any process, product of the system. Particularly, the present knowledge society warrants the phase of rapid developments which needs continuous and systematic quality assurance and sustenanceinitiatives in all spheres of domains and activities. Higher education being recognized as global service even in developing countries, it needs to adopt international standards in teaching learning and research practices so as to elope with the higher education institutions across the globe. The corporate and industrial sector emphasis to establish their stake even in remotest of the remote locations in Asian and African continent. It necessitates skilled and qualified human resource potentials with international outlook and it could be attained by provision of quality education. Government of India initiated quality assurance and accreditation system by establishing formal organizations such as NAAC & NBA in the year 1994 to assess and accredit Higher Education institutions and the porgrammes. During the last two decades, the quality assurance, sustenance and enhancement parameters, standards of these organizations have been changed and revised as to the prevailing conditions and expectations at the national and international level. Standards and quality indicators for higher academic libraries also have been changed and revised many times by giving more emphasize on the output of accreditation and quality of the institutions. It paves the ways and means for a great number of higher academic libraries to improve the quality of LIS. This paper aimed at identifying and bringing out quality initiatives, accreditation parameters, best practices and academic libraries standards that were exercised and the impact made on improving the quality of Library and Information environment. The work also highlights the standards of library set by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), National Board of Accreditation (NBA), and Distance Education Council (DEC), State government Higher Education agencies of India in comparison with global library accreditation parameters. This study also reveals the scores of library accreditation and its correlation with the overall institutional assessment. It is found that a good number of Indian Higher Education institutions libraries were gone for third cycle of Accreditation.
