Item Examing the research landscape and identifying gaps in digital reference services in sri lankan academic libraries: insights from literature(The Library, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2023) Bandara, B.E.S.; Hindagolla, B.M.M.C.B.Digital Reference Service (DRS) is generally identified as the provision of online mediated reference services by specialized personnel using the internet and computer technologies to communicate with the users and the staff without being physically present at the libraries. The main objective of this study is to identify the core areas discussed in the literature regarding Digital Reference Services and the research gap in the context of Sri Lankan academic libraries. The Web of Science, Emerald, and Google Scholar databases were searched with the identified keyword combinations to achieve this purpose, and the study included 39 studies selected from a total of 788 articles by following the methodology set out in the PRISMA statement. These 39 articles were selected as the primary dataset for the research, and the researchers have followed the review of the studies method to obtain the results. The study is qualitative in nature. Data gathered was analyzed using the frequency of the themes, and it found that there were no research studies conducted on digital reference services in Sri Lanka that mainly discussed reference services in general. Hence, this study recommends conducting studies on digital reference services to cater to the demands of net generation users by minimizing the challenges identified through the literature. It will be most important as a proactive decision when facing pandemic situations like COVID-19 as a readiness approach.Item An exploring study of bibliotherapy in a library setting: historical development and future directions(The Library, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2023) Harshani, K. South Asian countries have a wide variety of art forms, cuisines, religions, dialects, and belief systems, making them incredibly diverse culturally. “Food, in particular, embodies the key facets of any culture; it reveals a country's history, traditions and socio-economic standing. When considering the food culture, Sri Lanka and India have different types of food and characteristics unique to each country. However, the globalization of food has several impacts on how we live our daily lives. That means, depending on cultural considerations, religious views, societal attitudes, socio-economic standing, and the influence of mass media, eating habits and customs to be observed vary from one country to another. Accordingly, how has globalization changed the food culture of Sri Lanka and India? was the main problem of this research. The main objective of this research is to recognize how globalization has changed the food culture of Sri Lanka and India. For this research paper, secondary data were collected through the qualitative research method, which was gathered from published research papers, journals, e-books, conference papers, annual reports and relevant websites that were relevant to the research purpose. According to those secondary sources, it was found that urbanization, higher incomes, capital mobility and market liberalization are major contributors to changes in food systems. With the introduction of strong new companies like massive international fast food and food chains, competition for a market share of food purchases tends to increase. The Globalization of food offers a thorough overview of all the major concerns related to globalization and the modern production, distribution, and consumption of food. Accordingly, we can recognize how new things have been added to the food culture between Sri Lanka and India after globalization than the food culture that existed between Sri Lanka and India before globalization.Item Traditional caste hierarchy and services in Sinhala society (from the traditional villages in Kurunegala district)(The Library, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2023) Wasala, W.M. MaduIn any society there are economic, social, and cultural imbalances between groups of people. Sociologists have called this ‘Social Stratification’. Accordingly, caste and class status are a representation of social inequality. Caste can be identified as one of the layers of stratification which is common throughout society, like the highness and lowness of the person, the social level of mankind. in practice, people with historical values who are considered superior by most of the society are Upper caste and those who are defined as inferior based on specific measurements by the same group are considered inferiors. Caste is identified as a charged condition that comes with the birth of the person and the purpose of this study is to investigate the ‘Traditional Caste Hierarchy and Services in the Sinhala Society’. Field research and non field research were used in data collection for this study. The data collection techniques of observation, participant observation, questionnaires and interviews were used in the field research and the source study was done through the library references in the non-field research. The caste system of ancient Sri Lanka, which dates to the sixth century, was established by people who periodically migrated to Sri Lanka from India and established colonies here. The special feature of the Sri Lankan caste system that was formed and developed in this way is that it was shaped according to the culture of the country. It can be concluded that the Sinhalese caste system, which had a great impact on many aspects of society in this country until the recent period, is currently on the decline and many evolutions have taken place in it. But even though the society’s attitudes towards caste is undergoing a change, it was revealed that it is by no means a defunct social institution.
