Item The Validity of the Collections of Buddhist and Pali University Library in Fulfilling the Information Needs of Users(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Samarakoon, U.G.M.C.M.Library and information service provide essential support for lifelong learning and independent decision making. The mission of a University library is mainly focused on assisting teaching, learning and research on national development. The library collection is the primary needs to fulfill the mission of the library. The Library collection facilitate in raising of the quality of the library. There are many strategies are available for evaluating the library collection. This research paper highlights how fare the BPUSL library fulfill information needs of their users and identify strength and weakness of the collection, to review of current selecting procedures, to take effective decision making. There are Client centered and collection centered approaches used to collect primary data. Result of this study was that most users were satisfied with existing collection of the library.Item Information Seeking Activities of Undergraduates in Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies: a Study based on University of Kelaniya(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Peiris, P.A.I.; Lakmali, S.A.G.; Gunasekara, A. K. U. S.In 21st century, information has become a living thing and essential factor for the growth and development of a society. In any sector, people are searching information for achieve various purposes. Information-seeking behavior contains with the searching, locating, retrieving, and using of information. This study examines the information needs and information seeking behavior of faculty of commerce and management studies undergraduates in University of Kelaniya. The purposes of the study are, identifying the information seeking patterns of undergraduate students of faculty of commerce and management studies, explore the problems that undergraduate facing when accessing to the required information and identify practicable techniques for effective information seeking behavior. The study adapted a survey method and 2016/2017 academic year undergraduate students of faculty of commerce and management studies in University of Kelaniya were used as the sample. A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to collect data. Selected simple random sampling method was used as the data collecting technique and SPSS software was used for the data analysis. According to the study most of undergraduates used the library for assignment purpose, research work and note making. Majority of the users are preferred to use resources available on both of electronic and printed materials. The findings revealed that lack of knowledge regarding e-resources in the library, insufficient of user awareness regarding available management resources in the library and need of advance training for undergraduates for using OPAC. The study suggests, all of library services and strategic should be re-designed and aim for improving toward information needs and information seeking behavior, for racing student’s awareness and usage. The population of the study consisted of graduate school teachers in government schools in Sri Lanka. The sample consisted with 440 teachers and cluster sampling method was applied for the sample selection. A selfadministered questionnaire was used as the main data collection tool and the received data were analyzed SPSS (21.0). Information is a most important component of human life. The development and growth of an individual or a society is estimates by their level of information capacity. According to that this study mainly aimed to achieve to explore information needs and information seeking behavior of the students, who are following Diploma in Library and Information Science at Sri Lanka Library Association, Badulla Centre which is coordinating by Uva Provincial Library Service Board (UPLSB), Badulla, To identify the satisfaction level of the distance between the students’ needs and the services of UPLSB and also to discover the particular students’ problem while they are using library. This study directed by a survey method to collect data. Selected simple random sampling technique was used through self-administered questionnaire and SPSS software was used for analysis. Fifty questionnaires were distributed and forty five of them responded. End of the survey this study discovered the student’s information needs for making notes, gathering notes for assignments, to refer the recommended readings, the students’ information seeking behavior based on printed materials especially related books, the study identified the students’ satisfaction level between needs and available services is medium and also the study exposed lack of study materials and insufficient materials by medium wise especially for Tamil medium, not enough computer- internet facility to the users were the problems which are students faced. Information poverty is one of biggest issues faced by incarcerated people. As they do not have the same level of rights as normal citizens they have limited access to libraries and information sources. Incarceration itself creates need for certain information related to their new life in prison as they are deprived of freedom. As their information needs cannot be met easily and quickly they are always information poor. Illiteracy among prisoners make this issue more critical. Understanding these needs, their perspectives on prison libraries and role of the library in prison correctional programmes offer insight for librarians and libraries and library associations as well as prison authorities seeking to better serve incarcerated populations. The poorly managed libraries are not funded and are not staffed by library-trained personnel. Therefore, their information needs remain unmet as other prison staff focus only on custody, care and correctional programmes. In addition, no formal research has been undertaken to evaluate prison rehabilitation programmes and to understand the role of prison library or on user experience. Following an in-depth qualitative analysis of the transcripts of interviews, several aspects were identified to describe the experience of using a prison library. Not only prisoners, majority of prison staff have no understanding of how they experience their libraries, or of the role of these libraries play in rehabilitative process of the prisons and quality of prisoners’ lives. In this study several implications for practice are identified that may be of interest to prison administrators and library professionals, both in Sri Lanka and overseasItem Usage of Health Information Resources of Rural Women in Perambular District of Tamilnadu(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Balasubramani, R.This paper aims to examine the perception and use of health resources in Perambular District of Tamilnadu. The prime objective is to find out how rural People using health information and sources and how they perceive the advantages of health resources and problems for accessing them. Data were collected from 300 Rural Women in Perambulaur District of Tamilnadu. The questionnaire consists of 15 main questions with many of them having a number of subsidiary questions. Questionnaires and Oral Interviews were the main instruments used for data collection. The articles also explained information needs, sources, channels and information seeking behavior. The questions are designed for the Rural Women’s to elicit their experience with the Printed Resources use for their study and research work.Item Information Needs of the Rural Farmers in Kurunegala District in Sri Lanka.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka., 2017) Kumara, A.G.R.P.; Suraweera, S.A.D.H.N.Information is considered as a fundamental resource for the human and their education and other activities including agriculture. However, presently in Sri Lanka there is an ongoing problem with farmers’ up-to-date knowledge on agriculture which affects badly on their agricultural products. Hence, his study aimed to investigate the information needs especially agricultural information needs of the rural farmers in Sri Lanka. This study employed qualitative research methodology and used survey method as a research method. Cluster sampling method has been used to select a study sample which included 100 farmers who lives in Walpothwewa, Dambukele, Weerapokuna, Puwakgahakadawala, Galgoda and Kiniyama in Bingiriya secretariat division in Kurunegala district. Primary date for this study were collected through structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. How farmers use different sources of information to fulfill their information needs are also observed by the researcher. This study found that farmers require various types of agricultural information. They are information about varieties of new seeds, pesticide management, livestock management, diseases, and fertility of soil. This study further identified that the rural farmers used some of the common sources of agricultural information such as television, Radio, Newspaper, Leaflet, Agricultural exhibitions and mobile apps to fulfill their information needs. Based on the study findings, it is confirmed that there is a huge demand for updated agricultural information for the rural agricultural community in Sri Lanka. However, due to the lack of relationships between farmers and agricultural officers, farmers not satisfied with getting information via agricultural officers and other relevant authorities. This study recommended that government should take necessary step to improve farmers’ information seeking behavior by conducting workshop, lectures, and active agricultural societies. This study further suggested that elect efficient and talent officials and thereby develop good relationship with farmers to provide relevant information when necessary. Moreover, electronic media can also play a vital role for fulfilling agricultural information needs rural farmers in Sri Lanka.Item The Information and Information Seeking Behavior of Sri Lanka Administrative Service Cadet Officers: A Study Based on Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya,Sri Lanka, 2017) Balasooriya, B.A.P.The Library of the Sri Lanka Institute of Development Administration (SLIDA) plays a leading role in catering to diversified information needs of the Sri Lanka Administrative Service Cadet Officers (SLASCOs) who are undergoing their induction training in SLIDA. The principal purpose of this study is to ascertain the service quality in the progress of the information needs of Sri Lanka Administrative Service Cadet Officers undergoing their induction training in SLIDA. The other objectives are to identify what sources they use, and how, when, where they locate information and finally the user satisfaction of the library services provided by the SLIDA Library. Survey by administering a pre-prepared questionnaire was the principal research methods and the population was the Sri Lanka Administrative Service Cadet Officers of 2017 batch. Sample was 60 SLASCOs to whom the questionnaire was given and interviews were held for collecting primary data. The principal information needs of SLASCOs were related to their occupation, study and research. They were adequately satisfied with the Library and the availability of its information services. Data revealed that the SLASCOs used a variety of resources and employed several information seeking patterns to fulfil their information require to write their assignments. Of the huge repository of information source in the library the SLASCOs,they used only a limited information sources related to their information needs, related to the training at SLIDA. Only a very small group of people uses books to obtain additional knowledge for leisure. The library can provide sufficient facilities, as well as provide e-library services, they can locate information through automate library services, as well as if it is better to use in the library books for distribution in the library books. The results show that development of a user-friendly Library Service is a prime requirement for SLASCOs and more information sources needed for them have to be acquired. This will facilitate to maintain of a more productive and useful library service in the future and would lay the foundations for the creation of an international library.Item A Study on Attitudes of University Lectures and Students about the Use of Digital Libraries for Searching Academic Information.(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Somananda Thero, B.Modern world is highly information dependent and the teaching faculty and undergraduates use digital libraries and institutional repositories in their teaching and learning process in order to obtain the information they needed. The main purpose of this research is to figureoutthe situations and the attitudes that university lecturers and undergraduates feel when gathering information by using digital libraries. This research based on the survey method and for the survey all the lecturers and undergraduates of university of Kelaniya has been considered as the research population and a sample was selected among lecturers of Faculty of Social Sciences & Humanity and the undergraduates of the bachelor of (BA) special degree programs of the same faculty. Primary data were collected through distributing questionnaire to the lecturers, using random sampling method. Secondary data were collected through the printed sources which was considered relevant to the research. In the study of academic information, it was revealed that the most of the lecturers and undergraduates of the two faculty were not using digital libraries, Lack of understanding about this concept of the main reason for this situation. Responses indicate more priority to searching academic information in using digital libraries. It was also revealed that they use those information for their research activities. Also Digital libraryusers were happy in that as it contains qualitative information sources and neutral attitude to the quantity of subject. Related information sources. Language barrier faced by the Undergraduate and Lack of facilities, were some of the problem identified. Some of the solutions proposed based on findings are conducting awareness seminars and workshops to share knowledge about digital libraries and its contents, workshops to publicize it by the professional staff in the library field to solve many of the problems successfully which were identified through the study.Item Information Needs and Information Seeking Behavior of Geo Scientist in Sri Lanka(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Tilakarathna.T.C.P.K.Information need has become foremost among human needs. Due to this significance of information, it has become a necessity to the officials in the field of Library Information Science, to have a better understanding about the information needs of their clientele. The main objective of this research is to identify the information need and information seeking behavior patterns of geo scientists of Sri Lanka. This research was conducted following the judgmental sampling method, with the participation of 128 members of the Geological Association of Sri Lanka. Information was collected by means of questionnaires and observations. The level of response received for the questionnaires was at 46.9% and the responses were subjected to a statistical analysis by SPSS PC 2010. The behavioral patterns of the geologist were identified through Classification and Regression Trees Analysis (CART) based on different variables while comparing the scientific information obtained from the targeted group. The research revealed that geologists have a special tendency in depending on electronic sources to extract the information and the use of scientific periodicals, seminars and workshops. It clearly showed a very low usage of libraries to get access to information. According to the outcomes of this research, geologists were facing difficulties when they are seeking information due to following reasons, such as incomplete information, information not being updated properly, lack of high speed internet facilities, higher rates charged for online access and inability to browse information etc. These factor had an adverse effect on their research articles and its impact was detected clearly through the analysis as well. According to the above findings, geologists are not satisfied with the services provided by the libraries and information resource centers. Therefore, the officers who provide information should be prepared and well equipped with necessary information in order to provide a qualitative service to the core readership in the future without a delay.
