Item The Validity of the Collections of Buddhist and Pali University Library in Fulfilling the Information Needs of Users(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Samarakoon, U.G.M.C.M.Library and information service provide essential support for lifelong learning and independent decision making. The mission of a University library is mainly focused on assisting teaching, learning and research on national development. The library collection is the primary needs to fulfill the mission of the library. The Library collection facilitate in raising of the quality of the library. There are many strategies are available for evaluating the library collection. This research paper highlights how fare the BPUSL library fulfill information needs of their users and identify strength and weakness of the collection, to review of current selecting procedures, to take effective decision making. There are Client centered and collection centered approaches used to collect primary data. Result of this study was that most users were satisfied with existing collection of the library.Item An Analytical Study on the Library Acquisition Policy of Public Libraries: Study based on the Public Libraries in Kegalle District(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Kumara, H.U.C.S.All Libraries should follow library policies for success services and activities. Public library proved user’s present needs and future needs and also parent body needs. Therefore public library should follow acquisitions policy success their goals and objectives. This research main objective to study library acquisition policies followed by Public Libraries in Kegalle. The secondary objective was analysing the library acquisition policy if enacted. Survey methodology was used in the research in which both qualitative and quantitative data were gathered. The research sample consists of 5 Public Libraries in Kegalle District. They were situated at Kegalle, Mawanella, Rambukkana, and Ruwanwella Pradeshiya Sabhas. The study observed a 100% absence of a written library acquisition policy in researched libraries. The study observed a 100% absence of a policy in activities. Conclusions of study the libraries do not follow a library acquisitions policy. There is no written library acquisitions policy as well. A written library acquisitions policy has to be introduced to each library to be set as a guideline to standardize the activities done in the librariesItem Current Status & Future Challenges of the Public Libraries in Sri Lanka for the Pattern Change: a Case Study(3rd International Conference on Library and Information Management, Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Dilrukshi, T.; Illangarathne, S.K.This study focuses on the current status future challengers of the public libraries where located in the Polonnaruwa district in the North Central Province (NCP) in Sri Lanka with the perspectives of its properties, services, users and the staffs and latter part of the discusses the future challenges with the pattern change of the library professionals’ perspective. The questionnaire and interview were used as instruments in this study to collect data. The study revealed that the public libraries of Polonnaruwa District are not in the correct position by collection development. It also pointed out the most of the libraries are administered by the non-professional staffs. The major challenger was examined that library staffs are not in the good satisfaction level about their promotion mechanism. Use of palm leaf was a very popular communication method in Sri Lanka history. It seems that palm leaf art has faced a serious challenge in decay , non-use, non- attention and without any preservation and conservation mensuration Realizing these changes steps have been taken the preservation of palm leaf by various organization in Sri Lanka. Among all other palm leaf counters, the palm leaf manuscript study and Research Library (PMSRL) in University of kelaniya takes a special place. The principal purpose of the palm leaf manuscript study and Research Library is to collect, and copy all palm leaf manuscripts available in temples and in personal collection in order to create a digital library using modern technologies. The main objective of this paper is to investigate the role and service provided bypalm leaf manuscript study and Research Library. The other objective were to measure the value of traditional palm leaf preservation methods and to examine the importance of using modern technologic for palm leaf manuscript preservation. Field study method used for collection data and observation and interviews were conducted for gathering quantitative and quantitative data. It revealed that main obstacle faced in copying manuscripts was the insufficient knowledge and technologies. The dearth of knowledgeable person in palm leaf manuscript is another obstacle. Copying and digitization the content of palm leaf manuscripts are new method in their preservation. It can conclude that PMSRL provide a satisfactory role and service for the client.Item Managing Information Revolution: Strategies of Collection Development in Research Oriented Libraries(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Nanda Kumari, E.; Kavitha, E.S.The Philosophy behind information resource management is to design inventory and control of all the library resources required to produce information. If standardized and controlled, these resources can be shared and re-used throughout the network libraries, not just by a single user or an application. Obtaining, storing, and processing information is critical to an organization’s success and profitability. Ongoing innovations in information technology challenge managers, practitioners and researchers to create and adapt to new policies, strategies, and solutions for information management. Library patrons in today’s environment expect access to electronic items as well as physical materials. Also, publishers are abandoning the traditional print model in favor of electronic formats which is less expensive for them to deliver and easier access to users in the library. Information based organizations depends on computer databases and information systems for their ongoing operation and management. Information resource management is a program of activities directed at making effective use of information technology within an organization. These activities range from global level information planning to application system development operation, and maintain to support the end user computing. A significant reason for inability to integrate information management activities is the failure to adequately define the information resource. What is that must be effectively managed. What are the concepts to the problem of managing collections in an organization which provides a basic ingredient for effective information resource management and control in building valuable source of information for the end user etc. are the highlighting points to be focused in this paper.Item A Study of Library Collection in Sri Lanka Advanced Technological Educational Institutions in Sri Lanka (SLIATE)(Department of Library and Information Science, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2016) Balasooriya, B.A.P.The library is the place where rapidly increasing huge volume of knowledge and information is collected, organized for the dissemination to the users. The knowledge and information gathered in different resources are collected in libraries and these emulative resources belong to library collection. Within this content, library collection plays a significant role. This study is based on the evaluation of library collection. Objectives of the paper is to identify the library collection in Advanced Technological Educational Institute libraries to study the collection pattern and how organized it, to examine the suitability of collection with the study programs in SLIATE, to investigate the uptodateness of the collection. The research method adopted was the survey and the population was total students and academic staff and the sample were 250 Diploma final year students and 10 Lecturers including of library staff selected from all SLIATE in western and southern provinces. It was identified total collections cover with mainly textbook, there was a lack of other library materials. Library service conducted on traditional method, no internet facilities. The collection was not updated and weeding has not been done. Suggestions are made to improve library collection with additional books which are related to course conducted by SLIATE. Library opening hours have to be extended on readers demands, new collection development policy and weeding should be initiated. It is better if libraries take action to utilize new methods in the acquisition of library material.
