Language has a great influence on people and their behaviours. Due to this reason, language has been a widely used and important component in conveying specific messages through advertising. This research attempts to investigate the various types of language used to fulfil the task of advertising. In advertising, the most considered fact is the emotive power of words. The language of advertising normally provides the positive sides of a product. Data for this research is collected analysing the different types of advertisements used by different branded companies in the market. The principal task of language in advertising is conveying the messages about a product that helps the buyers to decide whether to purchase or refrain from buying the product. Different aspects of language are utilized in advertising in order to promote the products among consumers. Among them, euphemisms, simple vocabulary, syntactic parallelism, repetition, and alliteration can be identified as more common linguistic techniques used in advertising. For instance, it is more eye-catching to mention “fresh as a mountain stream” rather than using the word just “fresh” in an advertisement. Almost all the advertisements try to win over the edge in the business world. Hence, language acts as a major transmitter of messages to make the products popular among consumers. Finally, it is well-known that language is the art of communication used in advertising in the present world of business.Item Using Kahoot as a tool for teaching Prepositions for Tertiary Level ESL learners(Proceedings of the Undergraduate Research Symposium (HUG 2019), Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Wasana, W.P.N.The current generation prefers more technology than traditional teaching techniques. This research aims to investigate the use of the kahoot online platform as a tool for teaching and learning Prepositions for ESL learners at tertiary level. This method is discovered to have a beneficial effect on the motivation of learners. For this purpose, the quantitative method was used to gather information. In this study, 40 participants who study first-year English for the Humanities course at the University of Kelaniya participated in lessons on prepositions for four weeks. These participants were divided into two groups as the controlled group and the experimental group and each group consisted of 20 participants. After each lesson on prepositions, an assessment was conducted by using kahoot for the experimental group and the Controlled group was given paper-based assessments after each lesson. A pre-test was conducted in the first week to measure the participant's current knowledge on prepositions and a post-test was conducted in the fourth week to investigate the impact of using kahoot in giving knowledge on prepositions. After the study, a questionnaire was given to examine the perceptions of students about incorporating kahoot to the pedagogical process. After that quantitative data was analyzed using SPSS. The Likert scale was used to analyze data in the questionnaire and a one-way ANOVA was run, followed by Tukey's HSD test, to observe whether there are significant differences in the performance of these groups. The results showed that using Kahoot online games was more effective than the other method of teaching preposition on ESL learners at the University of Kelaniya. Therefore, the students can be taught by using this kind of innovative teaching technique interactively and effectively in ESL contexts. The findings may be shared with teachers to inform how Kahoot online game application impacts the learning of Sri Lankan ESL learners.Item Using English Songs and Poems to teach vocabulary for the learners of English as a Second Language(Proceedings of the Undergraduate Research Symposium (HUG 2019), Department of English Language Teaching, Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Dineshika, H.K.P.Vocabulary is an important aspect of teaching and learning a language, especially in teaching and learning a second language or a foreign language. Lexical Approach by Lewis (1993) contains a taxonomy of lexical items which shows what kind of vocabulary the learner should develop. When learning vocabulary, the aspects of pronunciation, meaning spelling and grammar should also be taught. In that case, there have been various strategies to teach and learn vocabulary in the English as a Second Language (ESL) context. This study investigated whether the use of English songs and poems to teach vocabulary for the Secondary level ESL learners enhances their vocabulary learning in the ESL classroom. This study provided an answer to the research question “To what extent do English songs and poems increase students‟ vocabulary enhancement at the secondary level?” and claimed two hypotheses a) The use of English songs in more effective in teaching vocabulary than using English poems. b) There is a significant difference in using songs and poems in grade 6 than in grade 10. Twenty-five students from each class from grade 6 and grade 10 at H/ WeeraketiyaRajapaksha Central College participated in the study. The data was collected using the pretests, posttests, and delayed tests. The data was analyzed using SPSS. The findings indicated that both songs and poems have a positive effect on the enhancement of vocabulary knowledge at the secondary level. In both grades, songs are more effective in teaching vocabulary than poems. In general, the findings will indicative of the effectiveness of the usage of English songs and poems to teach and learn vocabulary for the secondary level ESL learners though teachers did not pay much attention to its usage, hence, the need of teachers‟ training on using this strategy to teach vocabulary is indicative.Item Themes based on the Walther von Der Vogelweide‟s Poetry on courtly love (“Minnesang”) in Medieval Era(Proceedings of the Undergraduate Research Symposium (HUG 2019), Department of Modern Languages, Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Rathnayaka, R.M.R.P.N.Walther von der Vogelweide (c.1170-c.1230),who composed and performed courtly love (“Minnesang”), which was a tradition of lyric and songwriting in Germany that flourished in the Medieval Era (5th -15th century), was recognized as the single greatest Middle High German lyric poet before Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. This study strives to illuminate “What are the scopes of themes represented in Vogelweide‟s love poetry?” Previous researches based on Vogelweide‟s love poetry have especially focused on courtly love. Primary data for the present research were based on websites and lecture room observations. For secondary data, resource persons such as lecturers of the Modern Language Department were interviewed to test out my hypotheses. His poems which were chosen, are filled with examples of knights setting out on adventures and performing various deeds or services for ladies because of their courtly love.“Loving nobly” was considered to be an enriching and improving social practice in his poems. He moved German courtly love poetry to a fresh personal expression, even inventing the corresponding lyric genre, the “Madchenlieder” (songs to a common-class girl, sometimes also misleadingly called songs of “lower love”). From this research that has been carried out, it is possible to conclude that in Vogelweide‟s love poetry, he is not satisfied with a one-sided platonic relationship or adulation of more external beauty or high social status. The scope of Vogelweide‟s themes and the tone and manner of their treatment make it unmistakably clear that his office as a lyric poet went beyond courtly entertainment and ethical critique, functions which are performed today by the communication media. This study is intended to provide particular themes based on the poem category “Minnesang” written in the Medieval Era.The findings of this study would be beneficial for the novice German specialized undergraduates.Item The promotion of Sri Lankan English Morphology through Social Media(Proceedings of the Undergraduate Research Symposium (HUG 2019), Department of English Language Teaching, Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Jayasinghe, N.; Jayatilaka, T.; Wickramasinghe, S.The purpose of this research is to establish that Sri Lankan English (SLE) is widely used on social media and in pop culture, which thereby results in the promotion and avocation of SLE Morphology among the general public. The widespread usage of the internet and social media leads to popular social media content being created in multiple languages. The internet and social media allow people to engage in creative language play, especially when expressing emotions and reactions through words. This research focuses on how this social media trend has to lead to Sinhala and English code-mixing when creating content, what aspects of SLE Morphology is prominent in such content, and how much content encourages and advocates the usage of SLE in both spoken and written content on public platforms. This study was conducted with a sample group of 50 Sri Lankan youth aged 18 to 25 years, living predominantly in Colombo. The research was based on popular social media content that is currently trending in Sri Lanka and was limited to the content of Sri Lankan origin. The sample group of 50 participants was given a questionnaire that tested their awareness of SLE and current social media trends as well as the impact such social media content has on their usage of SLE. Thereafter, four widely used social media platforms were identified, and popular text and video-based content shared on public forums were gathered over a period of two weeks. The model of morphological analysis adopted in this study is based on Senaratne‟s analysis of the morphology of Sinhalese and English code-mixing. This research showed that SLE content is popular on social media and that the youth of Sri Lanka employs SLE morphology when creating content for social media, thereby promoting SLE among the masses.Item The lack of translation of sexuality based (erotic) novels in Sri Lanka(Proceedings of the Undergraduate Research Symposium (HUG 2019), Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Liyanage, T.The depiction of sexual terms in translation has been a controversial subject in Sri Lankan culture. Sex is without a doubt one of the most intimate indicators of identity as in conjures up images of sexual actions, eroticism, pleasure, taboo, fantasies, and desires, where the language is considered to be the most intimate medium of expressing sentiments of sex. The problems that lead to the discourage of Sri Lankan translators are the Sinhala language does not have sufficient vocabulary on expressing sexual terms, the government interference in banning erotic novels and Sri Lankan cultural beliefs. The main objective of this study is to encourage the Sri Lankan translators to embrace the beauty in translating erotic novels despite seeing the word “sex” as a socio-cultural and political act with serious theoretical and ideological implications. This study was conducted using the methodology of quantitative content analysis based on controversial novels. The used study sources are “Ma:gam So:liya” by Mohan Raj Madawala, “Lowe:na” by Mohan Raj Madawala and “Fifty Shades of Grey” by E .L. James which all are novels that are not yet translated. Studying and researching about the eroticism, the relationship between the translator and the erotic writings and researching about why the local translator is demotivated to translate erotic novels while selftranslating the content regarding sexual terms to the English language which is present on local controversial and erotic novels and vice versa. The study shows that the lack on translation of erotic novels in Sri Lanka is due to its cultural barrier, the fear of the translator to expose the colloquy sex in its pure nature because of the courteousness and discourteousness beliefs and the insufficient vocabulary of Sinhala language which is the main obstacle to convey the real erotic taste to the society.Item The impact of Sinhala dubbed cartoons on Sri Lankan kids(Proceedings of the Undergraduate Research Symposium (HUG 2019), Department of Modern Languages, Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Jayasooriya, B.G.S.R.; Sooriyaarachchige, S.S.S.; Gunawardana, R.M.Dubbing cartoons have become a growing trend in Sri Lanka. Cartoons of different languages and different cultures have been dubbed into the Sinhala language and Sri Lankan kids have addicted to watching Sinhala dubbed cartoons. The cartoons such as“Sutin Martin, Super Shiva, Sonic, Ben 10, Kadiyai Thadiyai and Soora Pappa" have become famous among the kids. Hence, this study is done with reference to the above Sinhala dubbed cartoons in Sirasa, Hiru TV, and Derana. The objective of this case study is to identify the impact of Sinhala dubbed cartoons on Sri Lankan kids who are in the age limit of 6 to 10 years old. Furthermore, this study discusses the perspective of the parents on the behaviour of their children and the effectiveness of Sinhala dubbed cartoons. 20 randomly selected kids including 10 boys and 10 girls from Colombo district schools were interviewed together with their parents. After interviewing the kids and their parents, a percentage analysis is given by analysing separately the data collected from the kids and their parents. According to the results, the behavior of the kids and their parent`s opinions depicted that both boys and girls have adopted to use Sinhala colloquial phrases used in the cartoons. Violence has been mostly increased among boys. Both girls and boys have equally tended to use clothes in which the cartoon characters have been fabricated. In addition, appetite for the food shown in cartoons has been increased among kids. Moreover, results gained by interviewing the parents showed that they did not want their children to watch Sinhala dubbed cartoons. In conclusion, in this study, the researcher identifies the negative impacts and effectiveness of Sinhala dubbed cartoons on Sri Lankan kids with reference to their behavior and their parent`s opinion.Item The evolution of Received Pronunciation over time: An acoustic analysis of the Queen‟s Christmas broadcasts(Proceedings of the Undergraduate Research Symposium (HUG 2019), Department of English Language Teaching, Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Ilfa, I.; Chandrasekera, N.This study presents a longitudinal analysis of some vowels from the annual Christmas broadcasts produced by Queen Elizabeth II over a period of 70 years in order to investigate whether adults adapt to sound changes taking place in the community. The sound changes that were analyzed in this study concern the tensing of the final vowel in words like “happy” which is sometimes known as “happY tensing” in British English Received Pronunciation over a period of 70 years. The sample of this study was Queen‟s 7 Christmas broadcasts: 1957(the first recording), 1967, 1977, 1987, 1997, and 2007 and 2017 where there was a gap of 10 years between each recording. The rationalebehind selecting this sample is that the Christmas broadcasts are one of the very few recordings of the same person producing similar materials under similar recording conditions annually over a period of almost 70 years. In order to come into conclusions, the chosen words from the recordings were phonetically transcribed and compared. The findings of the study showed that Queen‟s 1950s happY vowel is less tense compared to recent years. It was noticeable that there was a change of open vowels /ɑ,ʌ,ɒand ӕ/, change of /ɒ/ sound to /ɔ:/ and change of final /I :/ sound words to /i/ at present compared to the past.According to the findings of this study, it can be concluded that there is evidence of accent change within the same individual over time and that the Queen‟s vowels in the Christmas broadcasts have shifted in the direction of a more mainstream form of Received Pronunciation. These findings could be utilized in the field of sociolinguistics to develop an awareness of how an individual‟s accent changes over time.Item The epistolary fiction Giraya by PunyakanteWijenaike and its variable authenticity leading to multiple interpretations(Proceedings of the Undergraduate Research Symposium (HUG 2019), Department of English, Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, 2019) Ranasinghe, P.J.This study on PunyakanteWijenaike‟s epistolary fiction Giraya seeks to explore how the variable authenticity of the novel leads to multiple interpretations with reference to intertextual analysis.Variable authenticity as mentioned in the heading carries the meaning of the questionable reliability of the narration, mainly due to the fact of its being based on the fictional diary entries of a woman (Kamini) caught up in an unhappy marriage living in an insecure house. „Fiction‟ is entirely a source of fascination which leads the readers to experience a fictional experience, believing in its authentic possibility during the course of reading. Nevertheless, the personal journal being extremely personal tends to conceal many untold stories behind the words written on the page. This ultimately implies the incapability of believing in epistolary fiction. Girya, on one hand, as Kamini's personal journal implies a tendency of hiding her true intentions especially when the house she lives feels like an insecure space with duplicate keys carved for every door. Therefore, it suggests a low authenticity given to the narration written in a single perspective. On the other hand, it is this issue of variable authenticity that provides multiple interpretations about the tragic incidents that occurred in the house such as the mistress‟ and the servant's deaths on the same night. Thus, the study focuses in detail on how this novel as an epistolary fiction leads to variable authenticity creating multiple interpretations, which undoubtedly had been used asa technique by the writer mindfully, to elevate the novel from its primary analysis based on a surface level.
